Title: Irvington Field Gate Not Secured
Description: and left wide open.

alvinonline - November 15, 2005 12:35 AM (GMT)
Today (Monday) I went down to Irvington Field around 4:00 PM.

The gate was wide open and the club lock was the one unlocked on chain.

No one was at the field.
No one showed up while I was there till 5:00.

Please folks, it is important that gate be locked when no one is there.
If you are last out, try to remember to lock the gate.

Don't leave the field with only a non club member/s left behind.
They may not know or care about locking the gate.

Darn, that shoots my theory in the head. ;)

Yep, from evidence on hand at field, I knew someone/s was in field Monday.
I have good idea of who one field user was (more of that hurricane debri tin roofing was cut to size and put in dumpster), but he might not have been the only one out there or the last to leave so I made this general announcement as reminder for everyone, me included.

I got about halfway home one night and knew that I was last out, started thinking "Did I close and lock that gate????".
Would not have been any sleep that night if I had not returned to field to check.
Sure enough, I had just pulled on through the gate thinking no doubt of how good that Burger King Large Whopper Value Meal was going to be when I got it home.

I was not a the field monday, but this made me think of a good question because it did hapopen to me once. I went to the field on a week day and a non memeber was sitting outside the gate, when I unlocked it he went in with me and we both flew our planes, I was getting ready to leave and not sure what to do when it became obvious that he was packing up to leave as well, so we left together and I locked the gate, but in that situation are we supposed to tell the non memeber that he has to leave when we are ready to leave?

alvinonline - November 15, 2005 03:48 PM (GMT)
That is what I would do, Steve.

I have been only club member at field and with a nonmember present also.
I tell them that I will soon be leaving and will be locking the gate and which side of it do they want to be on. In a nice way of course.

Only makes common sense to me that when a member is not present, field must be secured. Also the reason that when the flying group sometimes makes a mad dash to gate at end of regular flying day, make sure that a nonmember guest flyer with no key is not left to be last out. They might not know how or if they should lockup.

I know of a couple of times over the years when a member unlocked gate for some nonmember/s to use field and just went back home and the guest flyers were just left on their own. This is wrong thing to do also, I believe.

Something else sort of on topic:
Some fellows when they unlock gate, lock the padlock back on the chain or even on some part of the gate instead of just hooking it unlocked back on chain or gate.
Can be a problem when the last member out goes to lock it and finds lock locked on something and they have to search vehicle for gate key or did not have their key with them that day. I don't remember that we have ever had an unlocked lock ripped off.
This happened a time or two before and the last member out could not lock gate because lock was already locked around something and they did not have key for some reason. Had to do best they could do with cable ties and bailing wire.

All this above is also good reasons that members should always try to remember to bring their key with them to field every visit. Some fellows who are always never first in or last out probably don't even know where their key is and in a pinch of needing key one day, have a "Ooops" moment. If you just don't have room on your keyring for another key (I don't, got too many on it now that I don't know what they used to unlock) put it with something you always bring to field with you. Airplane, flight box, transmitter case, beer cooler, or on chain with your dogtag.

Done started to get silly now, so bye.

Alvin/All,

I stopped by the field yesterday morning to pick up the channel 49 pin,
and to get the correct frequency for channel 54. However, I locked the
gate when I left the field (about 7:30 am Monday). I also jerked on the
lock to make sure that it was secure.

Must have been someone after me.

Maybe we need to get us one of those minature security cameras from
Radio Shack so that we can start catching these culprits on tape.

Keep in mind that even though we would LOVE to blame a fellow member for this unforgivable and inexcusable act, there is also that possibility that:
- a County worker had business at the field and forgot to lock the gate on the way out....
- or the potty man... (God knows we needed him after the Big Boys with their Big Toys left the field...) <_<
- or the Alabama Power Company's meter reader...
- or the EPA person who checks the water table and the methane concentration periodically (Perhaps he was overcome by the methane fumes eminating from his test pipe, or from the two porta-potties...)
Not likely, but it's possible...

In the meantime, let's find out who did this dastardly act, and give him heck...

Since Alvin said it was the club lock that was left undone and not any of the other locks that kind of limits it somewhat. Do any of those services share our same lock? I'm guessing Alabama Power has their own lock and the county as well, but do the people who empty the dumpster and the porta-potty crew share our lock?

That being said, it wasn't me, so when y'all figure it out just let us know. B)

That is correct, Mr. Mike.

The portables had not been serviced (due to be Wednesday) and the dumpster (serviced once a month normally and it was last emptied this past weekend) was full.

 Some People have to work on Monday.so you know were i was. :fullmoon:

Flying Dutchman - November 16, 2005 02:40 PM (GMT)
It has happened before that one of the service companies or a County worker came to the field AFTER the gate had been opened by a club member, then the member goes home, and that other person just leaves without locking our club lock.

But the culprit was most likely one of our own...
