Title: Horrific MidAir Crash
Description: nose to nose.

alvinonline - November 7, 2005 03:36 AM (GMT)
Today at Irvington Field, I heard this noise like someone had hit a chunk of iron with a five pound sledge hammer.

I looked up to see chunks of RC model airplane falling from the sky.
At first I thought that the heavens had opened up and mana was falling to ground in form of RC goodies for our benefit.
Soon realized that the chunks of models did not look to be in such good condition and ranged in size from wing panels to confetti.

Seems that one of those P-51 Mustang trainer planes and some other sport type plane had met nose to nose and at full speed.
The engines were all busted up.

The main debri field drew a good crowd.

That other plane was my Funtana :o

With me on the sticks :crying:

And it was flying SOoooooo Good

Total on the plane, Three servoes, Busted head and carb on motor.

Brand new motor, it was the 6th flight.

It was an awful crash. My condolences to all parties involved.

Last rumor was that the planes hit engine to engine. I think
that even if you tried, you would not be able to replicate this
event.

Sorry again Don. What hurt me the most was seeing the looks
on the pilot's faces. Poor Don has his chin on his chest, and the
new student had his hands on his knees. Total unbelief and shock.

Again, soory for the losses guys.

Sorry for not responding earlier to this post, but I have been tossing and turning all night. Couldn't sleep because I was haunted by images of P-51 Mustangs chasing me and trying to crash into me and trying to destroy me.
I just got up, a bit bleery-eyed.

I am very sorry about the midair. Tim was doing so well with the Mustang, getting close to taking off and landing with it. And Don was making great progress with his Funtana, and he started to like it a lot, I could tell.

That is two Mustangs — the first two ever at our field — that crashed on two Sundays one week apart. I felt bad for Sam's loss too.

For me that makes 15 midairs in a total of 15 years of flying RC. Seven of those were by "normal" midairs, eight were by what I call "forced midairs" — by flying Combat, formation, or chasing each other (the last two by mutual consent.)

Three midairs involved students I had on the training cord.

One midair involved a young boy being coached by his dad. The guy tried to make me pay for his plane, "because" he said, "I hit his son's plane". I declined. <_<

Another collision involved a helicopter. <_<

I'm just having to live with this, a reputation (already legendary) of destruction and mahem, a severely blemished record (unparalleled in the club's history) of personal crashes that include fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft, and a large number of midairs — some mild, some absolutely spectacular — causing deep trauma to newcomers to our wonderful hobby.

These things will haunt me for the rest of my life...
I just don't know how much more of this I can take... :crying: :crying: :crying:

Hang In there Frits

You know what thay say, Cheer up things could be worse :D

Shure ENOUGH!!!!! you cheered up, THINGS GOT WORSE :P

As Al says, I Love R/C :D
I feel as bad for Tim as for myself. And Tim says the sams thing. And you are right, what a shock it is :o

Hmmmm You have 15 for 15 years  LOOK OUT I have 2 for 2 1/2 years.I just might ketch up to you

I lost my motor to. It would cost well over 1/2 the price of a new one to repair it...

And Darn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just when it was flying Sooooooooooooooo good ;)

Oh well, we will get over it..................

Man O Man... I am sooooo sorry that this happend.

I feel your pain, the time spent putting your model together, making sure that every little part is perfect, wings are correctly installed for straight and level flight, taking care to wipe off excess epoxy, as to look neat and clean when sitting static in the pits. The time taken to properly break in the engine, as to insure reliability, as well as longevity. Always taking care when transporting it, so as to not nick or scratch the finish and/or the covering, only to experience this sensless, freakish accident that just troubles me down to the bone.

Too bad you didn't catch it on video, because I sure as h-e-l-l would have liked to have seen it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
