Title: Hurricane Dennis, staying or going?

jonkoppisch - July 8, 2005 05:34 PM (GMT)
Here we go again!!!! Are you going to stay and ride it out or hit the hiway? BTW, should this go under social club or yearly event <_<

alvinonline - July 8, 2005 06:51 PM (GMT)
I voted "Staying" for now.

Maybe sometime tomorrow when we have a better handle on just where it is likely to land, I might decide to go.

As strong as it is, if it looks to be headed right for Mobile or just to West of us, chances are greater that I will run.
If it looks to be headed somewhere fairly East of Mobile, probably will stay.

Don't really know where to go if I decide to get out.
Somewhere West or North, I reckon.

Today, I am filling up with gas and buying new batteries for radio and flashlight.
And makeing a list of what to throw in truck in case of a fast exit.

Any advice?

Jon, this looks like an Ivan clone, so far! I plan to stay at home, as I did during Ivan. But if Dennis becomes a Category 5, I may want to change my mind, but... by then, it will be too late to go anywhere!
I would hate to advise anyone what to do, as circumstances are different for everyone.

My wife will leave town tomorrow with her parents, as her Dad is an a nursery home, and her mother refuses to leave him there and refuses to stay at her house, which is located on a river landing across the Bay (always consider heavy flooding is a possibility). So the three of them will be moving to a hotel above Meridian, Mississippi, tomorrow.

My parents live in Fort Myers, Florida, and I feel the storm will skirt by them. With Ivan, I went to stay with them in case I had to take them home, but then had to race home to beat Ivan to Mobile! Timing is very important when you have senior relatives in the line of fire!

I know you are new to this area, with only a couple of storms behind your belt. Just don't rely on those people who say, oh hades, "they" were wrong during the last storm, so this one will just blow over. Each storm is different. I believe in watching the weather channel and the local TV news, making my decisions based on what the experts say, how far I'm away from water, what I'm living in, and how strong the storm is. Also remember that the strongest winds, rains and tornados are usually on the east side of the eye, so if the center goes to New Orleans, that may still not be an improvement!

I will just board up all my windows tomorrow and ride the storm out. BTW I FINALLY got all my boards cut for Ivan. (I had been meaning to buy them every year since Fredrick!)

Look in today's paper (Friday), page A5, "Preparing for Dennis", an excellent full-page reference. It's a must-read that you may want to save. It says it all!

Jon, that last post was by me.
I thought I was logged in, was, then got knocked off-line...

We're not sure what we are going to do yet.. Lee has to work Sunday until 3pm so that extremely limits our options!!!!! They told the girls that if anyone doesn't show for their shift etc they will be terminated immediately and as it's a nursing profession there are different rules that they can get away with!!!! I'm sure by then no matter where Dennis is the interstates and other roads will all be a mess!!!! I've already been doing the 'cleaning' ie getting ready. Hate it hits anyone but as said I would rather it went east of us!!!

Flying Dutchman - July 8, 2005 07:17 PM (GMT)
Went out to buy a generator this morning... Too late! Lowe's was out, with no promise of anything soon.

During Ivan a neighbor shared his generator with me, keeping my two refrigerators, freezer and the live fish in my pond going!
I think I will offer to buy his gas for the generator if he shares with me again...

Lowe's, Wall-Mart were out of D batteries, but found them at Winn Dixie. There were only a few left.
I'm told CVC drug store at Schillinger and Three Noth Roads "has plenty", what ever that means.

Bought two big bags of ice to keep in the chest freezer. Will delay spoilage during long power outages.
Ice is running short!
Drinks and canned food items are disappearing!
Gas lines are forming! :o

If you have just been sitting around, get prepared now!

Don't forget to charge your RC batteries! :P

jonkoppisch - July 8, 2005 07:27 PM (GMT)
I did manage to buy a generator a while back......... Our neighbor let us plug in for a bit as well!!!!! It wont be long till the scalpers are back out...........

David - July 8, 2005 07:54 PM (GMT)
Went out to buy a generator this morning also but no luck. I have looked all day. Let me know if you find any. If it comes on the bad side or right at us. I will leave i think as well.

Anthony - July 8, 2005 08:57 PM (GMT)

Landfall of Dennis' eye is predicted to be Sunday around 3:30 PM.
It's a large storm... The bad stuff will have reached us hours before that time (probably Saturday evening/night)...
Better leave Saturday, if you can (traffic, flooding, etc.) — after that it will be too late to leave, I believe...

jonkoppisch - July 9, 2005 12:46 AM (GMT)
I agree about saturday... They, lee's boss's told all of the employee's to show up or be terminated so!!!!!!! She has to work until 3pm sunday

Flying Dutchman - July 9, 2005 01:08 AM (GMT)
Well, looks as if you and Kris will be riding it out at home alone, and Lee will ride it out at her job, unless she can get home. Best not to travel when the eye is near or on top of you!
My hats off to people like Lee who have to be at their jobs until the bitter end or throughout it all.
Same goes for rescue people and policemen who have to patrol evacuated areas!

alvinonline - July 9, 2005 02:31 AM (GMT)
Not sure about staying or going.

Will probably put it off till too late to go anyway.

Today, got the fan blades tied down, wind sock poles laying flat on ground, and took freq. pins off board and put them in grey metal cubbard in kitchen (left door, middle shelf).
So if anyone goes to field Saturday, don't try to turn on the fans. Might burn out a motor or something.

jonkoppisch - July 9, 2005 03:18 AM (GMT)
Now they have a mandatory evacuation issued for mobile county, eck!!!! Talk about traffic!!!!!!! Oh Boy.........

David - July 9, 2005 04:39 AM (GMT)
Hey Jon i am planning on going out of town due to they have shifted more toward us now....but might have to stay as i have a grand-mother-inlaw who might not be able to fend for them self in this one.....for anyone wanting a generator, I heard there will be some generators in the early am at home depot if anyone wants one. I am sure there will be a line so get there early if you want one. I am going to try and get one. (early as in 4:30 to 5:00) they go on sale at 6:00

I just heard that mandatory evacuation order on the radio.

Does that mean we have to go or be arrested or something?

If everyone left in Mobile tries to get out, might be more dangerous on the road or get stuck in traffic somewhere near to nothing to hide in/under.

What am I to do?
Wonder how Hy 98 would be to get out on?
Some lady told me today that last year they left town on Hy 98 and it was not as bad as the Interstate.

Anybody still going to stay for sure.
I don't want to be the last one in Mobile all alone.

David - July 9, 2005 06:50 AM (GMT)
about the mandatory evacuation is something they want you to do. You do not have to is what the guy said on tv 5 tonight. Hwy 98 goes right by my house and tonight was bumper to bumber. I will let know if i stay

Was up at 3:00 this morning watching local news. The ticker said that our governor has ordered a mandatory evacuation for Mobile County SOUTH OF I-10, not the whole County!
Residents in all low-lying areas, mobile homes and RVs, and those near water are urged to leave for highr grounds.

Note that even though Dennis' eye is moving more west, the projected landfall cone remains where it was two days ago, and we (Mobile/Pensacola) are still in dead center! The path is much like Ivan's was.
Storm surge at landfall is anticipated to be 10 to 14 ft.!

Many businesses, including health-related ones, will close tomorrow.
Both south-bound lanes of I-65 will be reversed at 6:00 AM today so traffic on all four lanes will go north.
Some bridges may close when winds exceed 45 mph.
Several shelters will be open tomorrow, including one for special needs.

Keep watching local TV channels 5 and 10 (CBS and NBC) for continuous updated information.
The Weather Channel has tropical storm updates at the top of the hour, and at ten minutes before the hour for sure.

I will be securing all my yard objects and board up my windows in the morning.

Also will have to find a way to barricade my garage door. If the eye goes east of Mobile, the winds tend to want to blow it in. The door almost buckled during Ivan. Had to prop ladders, ice coolers and pieces of wood between the door and my two vehicles to sturdy it up! It was a bit scary watching that door move back and forth for an hour or so!

That's good then.. I've not heard that though. I know last night it was all over the news about the whole county being evaced.... I just saw the ticker that you were talking about... The wording kind of misleads. It's for all of mobile county, then south of I10 for baldwin co...

I wouldn't even think about going out 98.. I live next to it and during Ivan it was bumper to bumper of barely moving traffic. I'm sure it probably got better after crossing into MS. The best way to go would be straight out airport thru Hurley then hit 63 north and back to 98. Probably be even better if you could avoid the 63/98 merge!!!!

Good news, it's a cat 1 with wind speed of 92, even listed at 80 on the WKRG tracking site. They say it will still hit cat 3 by landfall though... Hey, we can always hope!!

Hey Alvin, grab some chicken legs and come on out to our house for the hurricane. We'll grill out

It's in the paper this morning - Both Mobile and Baldwin Counties SOUTH OF I-10...
No, it says, you will not be arrested if you decide not to leave!

Yes, Dennis will probably be back up to cat. 3, they say.
From the weather report - winds locally are predicted to be 40 to 80 mph Sunday afternoon...

jonkoppisch - July 9, 2005 02:07 PM (GMT)
lol, I wish they'd get their story straight!!!!! I keep seeing it the other way. You're right about not being arrested. They said that they're not going to go from house to house and arrest anyone staying, lol.

Did Dennis come close enough to Ft Myers to cause your family any damage?

Hope the winds are as low as the 40-80!!!!!!!

Mustangman - July 9, 2005 06:03 PM (GMT)
The family was going to leave but there's on where to go......motel and hotel's all booked up pass Texas and pass Nashville. :(

jonkoppisch - July 9, 2005 06:09 PM (GMT)
Tomorrow will be a good time to practice all of those new electric heli's indoors ;)

We were planning a trip to North Carolina but lee wont get off work in time to beat Dennis so....

Hopefully overnight when the temps drop maybe Dennis will loose a little bit of steam!!!!!!!

David - July 9, 2005 07:12 PM (GMT)
Well I am staying in mobile....dose not look good

jonkoppisch - July 10, 2005 01:07 AM (GMT)

alvinonline - July 10, 2005 03:02 AM (GMT)
Yawl be quite, I am getting scared now.

Why did yawl tell me to stay.

I could have been out in Texas or somewhere by now.

Wonder if the Candy Store is open.

jonkoppisch - July 10, 2005 03:48 AM (GMT)
AAAhhhhh, don't get scared yet.... save that for tomorrow ;) Looks like it's going to go right by us on the east side, hope hope!!!! They keep saying that the hurricane winds center is 40 miles wide which is good, that Ivan's was much larger!!!! Are you coming over to the house for some BBQ tomorrow

Chazon - July 10, 2005 01:58 PM (GMT)
We're staying here in Chickasaw- We're in a Brick home so we're hoping for the best - Everyone take care and keep in touch if you can. Be safe!
