Title: My poor Sportster

Mike - June 7, 2005 03:46 PM (GMT)
Well, anyone who was at or near the field Sunday probably heard me cuss on the flight line while my Super Sportster 20 made a run for the dirt, with only half of a wing still attached. It was a kit I bought used and already built, and immediately upon inspecting the center section of the wing I realized it was never glassed. Then I pulled up the Sportster's manual online....

QUOTE
4. D GLASS THE CENTER SECTION OF THE WING
Use 6 ounce glass cloth (or nylon cloth) and glass the center section glue joint. Use a 4" wide piece of cloth and polyester resin or epoxy. Sand the center section when
dry. Apply a second coat of resin or epoxy if necessary. IMPORTANT — Omitting this step will result in a wing failure during flight and result in a crash.

I guess the builder didn't read that part.

But on the bright side, it's nearly back together and should be flying the next time I make it to the field in a couple of weeks.

Hey Mike,
Too bad on the crash and I know you will have it back better than ever.

Seems that I remember that you got the Sportster mostly already built, from Fritz. B)

I honestly don't remember who/where I got the strongexplative thing from. That doesn't say anything about what I've been up to these last 7 or 8 years, does it?

The entire puzzle has been put back together. Just a little reinforcement here and there, some fiberglass or nylon cloth on the center section of the wing, and she'll be ready to go again....maybe a half pound heavier, but she'll fly.

Not sure which FritZ you are referring to!

This FritS would have glassed the center whether it had said so in the instructions or not! :D

Besides, I have never owned a Super Sportster.
