Title: 40 or 60
Description: Trying to decide
Chazon - April 26, 2005 08:42 PM (GMT)
Ok - so now I've solo'ed on my Avistar (Thanks David, Frits, and Andrew :) ) and I'm starting to plan and drool over starting my second plane. I know it will take a while to get it completed, but I want to start it now while I become confident behind the sticks on my Avistar. After talking with several people, I've decided on H9's Ultra Stick. What are the big differences between the 40 and 60? Just size? I'm planning to go with a 4 stroke for the power - either OS or Saito. Wanted to get some suggestions from the more experienced builders and pilots out there.
Thanks!
Charles

Charles, ask Tony about the 60-size Ultra Stick. I believe he's disappointed in the lack of speed (he's got a .60 on it, I believe.) The bigger they are, the more they drag!... <_<
Most people get the 40-size and with a Webra .50 on it, it will move! Especially with a tuned pipe. But then, speed may not be your primary concern. Sometimes it just gets you to the ground a lot faster... :roflmao:
Either Stick will do some fine aerobatics, if that's what you want to learn. And it's just a nice-flying plane for all-around flying.
My Ultra Stick blew a cork in flight, soaking all the electronics, and it crashed. But Don revived it, then traded it to David Lanzo, who still occasionally let's me fly it... I miss that plane very much!... :crying:

Saito!!!!!Spithoweeeeepthhtppphhpth
Go with O.S.  Now mind you, that is just my opinion  A lot of people love them, My Son has a Saito 100 on his Mustang and he likes it. We have a Saito 56 and it was JUNK  I had to send it in for repair four times!!!!!! OK!!!OK!!! Don't get me started
I have two, O.S. 70 Surpass 4 stroke :) I like them  My Saito 72 has to have new bearings put in it.OOOOOOOOOO I realy don't like SAito!!!!!!!!!!!!! OK!!OK!!I said I wouldn't get started.......
As for the airplane, the 40 is a little cheaper then the 60, and it will use a smaller engine, so it is a matter of how much you wan't to spend. And of corse the 60 is a little biger, so you can see it a little better.
I think we have them both flying at our feild, take your time and compair them.

I love the 40 size with a webra 50 it will sure move if you like speed. cost is cheap also. I was going to go with the 60 but i have not seen anyone get major speed out of them. I know that you could with enough motor. Both will be very fun and great to fly.

Go with the 40 size and the webra.... You'll like it!!!!!

Thanks for the info. Hmm - hadn't given the Webra's much thought. If I go with the 40 (which is where I'm now leaning) would the Webra be better than say a TT 46 Pro or OS 46 AX?
Chazon - April 27, 2005 12:58 PM (GMT)
Also - whats the advantage of a ringed engine? Would the OS 50 SX Ringed be worth the extra $50 over the 46 AX?
David - April 27, 2005 03:06 PM (GMT)
The power of the webra 50 would drag both of those motors around. The webra is better hands down.

I have flown Webra engines (.32 and .50) for many years - I LOVE them! I think I have three of each now...
The .32 will give many .40s a run for their money. With a tuned pipe they will outperform most .46 engines. Everyone usually runs Webra .32s (with racing props) in our pylon races...
The Webra .50 will match or exceed performance of most .60 engines (O.S. included), especially with a pipe or a tuned silencer.
And they just keep on running, even after a crash (...I know, 'cause I have some experience with crashes...) ;)
Keep extra muffler screws on hand.

My stick is a .40 size with an O.S. 46 fx....good all around plane

Thanks for the advice everyone. Guess it's time to make a Hobbytown trip and place some orders  I've decided to go Ultra Stick 40 (Red covered version) with the webra 50. I'll start with a stock muffler, and as I progress, I'll play around with a tuned pipe later.
On the topic of my Avistar, I purchased a few props on Frits and Andy's suggestions to try to get a little more power out of my 40LA. I also read about removing the baffle from the muffler for a little more power. Anyone know of a reason to not do this? The LA is quiet enough that they say it's not overly loud without the baffle, and they get better performance out of it.
Thanks for all the info!
Charles

The egine will run fine without the baffle, I took the one out of my Evolution 46.but I didn't notice any diffrence in power and I didn't like the sound so I put it back in.
But it might help the 40 LA, Just rember to use some (RED) lock-Tite on the center section when you put it back togather, these mufflers are bad for comeing apart I forgot to do that on my newest O.S.46 AX, and last sunday I lost the back part while flying. Some people use JB Weld, but I like the red lock-Tite better.
Oh BTW, I called the O.S. Service Center and told them the muffller came appart, I just bought it Dec 27th and it's only had about 15 flights on it. Thay said OK, I will send you a new one  "AH Yes, Mr Squeeky Wheel strikes again "

Dumb question here Don, what's the difference between the blue lock-tite (which I have) and red lock-tite (which I don't)
Don Koval - April 29, 2005 08:49 AM (GMT)
Not a dumb question  The Red is stronger, and not good to use on small bolts as it is more permanent.
You would use it on bolts 1/4" and up.
With the muffler being around 1" in diamenter, if you ever need to take it apart you clamp it in a vice, and with a pair of chanel lock pliers, you can twist it to seperate it. Thiis is the way that I do it and it works fine....
Then use the Blue Lock-tite on the bolt nuts that hold the two sections of the muffler togather..

Man, was my 40LA is running so much stonger without the baffle. I could really tell the difference Sunday. Thanks for the info Don - and thanks for the help removing it Andrew :)

Great now lets get that ultra stick going and you will have tons of power. :D
Chazon - May 3, 2005 01:18 PM (GMT)
Will do - working on securing the funds. I hope to purchase it, build it and have it running very soon. :)
Chazon - May 5, 2005 10:21 PM (GMT)
Ok - The Ultra Stick 40 (Red Trim) with the Webra 50 are now on order/layaway at Hobbytown :) I hope to have it ready soon.
David - May 6, 2005 02:25 AM (GMT)
great combo. Now are you going to build it with the flaps? as it can be done both ways
Osirus711 - May 6, 2005 01:54 PM (GMT)
Go with flaps....adds hours of floating entertainment
aNthonyguest - May 6, 2005 02:58 PM (GMT)
must have flaps ugugugugug
Chazon - May 6, 2005 09:23 PM (GMT)
Yes - I am putting flaps on it.
