The OS .46 is a good running engine.

It will be fast on a "40" size trainer plane.

It will fly a "60" size trainer plane barely.

What size/type/name trainer plane do you have or considering getting?

Justin P. - December 31, 2004 04:23 AM (GMT)
The os 46 is a good engine. It is reliable, strong, and easy to maintain. This engine on a trainer is a little fast for a beginner, but that is why we have throttle. :D

RIPMAX Trainer 40

Wing Span: 1550mm (61")
Weight: 2200g
Engine: .38~.48
Build Level: ARTF
Skill Level: Beginner

:3dplane:

alvinonline - December 31, 2004 02:57 PM (GMT)
The OS .46 should be just right for that RIPMAX Trainer 40.

Good choice and hope for you much success and enjoyment.

Flying Dutchman - December 31, 2004 03:04 PM (GMT)
Normally, after learning to fly a trainer, people will move up to a more maneuverable, faster second plane, and the .46 would be just great. A .40 engine would probably not be sufficient power (unless you are not normal and want less speed and maneuverability...) ;)

The O.S. .46 engine is a great first engine because it will power your .40-size trainer nicely, PLUS it will be suitable for your second, third plane, and beyond. :)

Good luck!

I agree with Justing on this one for sure!! The OS 46 is a reliable good engine to use and able to expand with later on. There's nothing worse than fighting some low budget engine while you're trying to learn... I know!!!!!!!

Alan,

Do this for Avatar selection.
Be logged in to forum.

Go to your My Controls->Personal Profile->Edit Avatar Settings

Select one of the Pre-installed avatars in the gallery.

Or, if you want to use a custom one, note the size restriction (80pixels X 80pixels) and the image file size under 25 KB.
Either enter the URL for where you have image hosted on internet or better yet, upload it to the forum.

If you can not get your Avatar working, post here with the name of one you want from the pre-installed avatar gallerys or attach the image to your post and I will fix it for you.

hi guys.why i need a power penil? :3DingPlane:

Flying Dutchman - January 4, 2005 03:14 PM (GMT)
You don't really!
It is for convenience.

The power panel supplies power to:
a. electric starter motor to start your engine
b. electric fuel pump
c. glow plug
You must have a 12V battery to provide the power to the power panel.
All those items are not cheap! $$$

You can do the same without any of those luxury gadgets and instead use:
a. a wooden stick or stiff rubber hose about 10 inches long (25 cm), to start the engine. ***
b. a manual, hand-cranked fuel pump
c. a battery operated glow driver (rechargable, or a D alkaline battery)

*** DO NOT use your fingers to flip the propeller unless you have really long fingers (20 cm or longer...) and you can stand to lose part of them. It WILL hurt! :crying:

Yes, BUT not for very long.
Not big enough (1600 MA) for the job.

If you use an electric starter for cranking airplane engine, that battery will need charging after just a couple of minutes of use. And that small a bettery being used up so fast would get very hot and might pop. And the little wires comeing out of it would get very hot and might melt and might set panel and field box and fuel jug on fire and burn up all your good new stuff. :fuming: :crying:

For properly powering a power panel, you need not only one with 12 volts, but bigger capacity (like 10 A or more). Like one that is used in a motorcycle, :moped: rideing lawnmower, garden tractor, or small car.

Hobby Shops sell one especially selected for power panel use. Big enough to do the job and small enough to easily fit in your field box that power panel is built/attached to.

Seeing that you seem to be pretty new to the hobby I would suggest that you visit a hobby shop like Hobbytown USA. They could help suggest and show you a lot of the items we are talking about as well as give you an idea as to what else is out there. It would help you get what you need, and possibly save money in the long run by helping you to avoid purchasing the wrong item.

There may not be a hobby store on the island of Malta! :(

How close is your hobby store, Alan, or do you have to order your RC stuff in from the Internet?

alvinonline - January 6, 2005 03:20 AM (GMT)
This may help Alan out some.

I found these RC Model Aviation related websites from Malta.

Stephen Galeas' RC Web Site

Malta Model Aircraft Flying Association

Probably some more links to Malta sites on these linked sites.

Alan,
This is most wonderful news and you are well on your way to learning the RC Model Aviation hobby.

I see that you have started to purchase your hobby needs, found local hobby shop, and are member of Malta Model Aircraft Flying Association.

Congratulations and I believe that there is even an offical RC flying site right in the middle of Malta.
Could not get much better. :D

Way to go, dude.

Keep us informed and post a picture some time of your hobby activity.

Hi, the os 46FX or AX is great trainer engine. If you want a little more power get the Tower Hobbies muffler that they sell for their engine for around $15 and a 12X4 APC and you will find out just how much you trainer can handle. Make sure you seal all control surfaces and there isn't any slack in your control linkages and have fun.
