hey jon

what motor and speed controller do you have in your yak.

jonkoppisch - January 14, 2005 04:13 AM (GMT)
I actually have 2 of the yaks.

1 is outfitted with the equipment from the
blue foam plane that I used to fly all of the time. It has the e flite 370
brushless motor, 6:6:1 gear drive and castle creations phoenix 25 speed controller with hitec hs55 servos.

The second has a himax motor, 6:6:1 gear drive e flite 20 amp controller and hitec hs 55 servos....

Did you try the motor that come with the plane?
would you recommend this plane?

jonkoppisch - January 15, 2005 05:02 AM (GMT)
I didn't try the motor that came with it. I think that the stock motor will fly it, maybe even do some 3d but to really enjoy this plane or any other of the foamies you want more than enough power!!! You're going to have to get the brushless motor combo. As far as the yak. I really like it so far. I had it out the other day when the wind was howling and I was doing rolling harriers almost stationary :D I was also hovering horizontally, lol

 thanks for the info., I'm thinking about getting the yak.
I got one more question, does it handle good at slow speeds?

What other speed do these foamies have, except slow?
:what: :hysterical:

jonkoppisch - January 15, 2005 02:26 PM (GMT)
lol, it seems to handle good at any speed. It uses more 'room' to fly than the smaller electrics like the shockflier, tribute, tensor 4d etc.

:D thanks again for the info Jon

hey jon

I think i'm going to go get the yak tomorrow, I have a few more questions
if ya don't mind. I'm going to go with the 380 brushless motor, will the geardrive that comes with the plane work with the e flite brushless motor?
If not what do ya recommend.
gws pico servos, will they work ok on this plane?

thanks for your help

Hey David & Jon,

David that is a 370 brushless  . Also you need to know what battery to put in it. :D

Justin's right about the motor, it's the e flite 370. I just looked at the gear drive unit. It looks like the 370 with the included adapter plate will mount right in. The gear drive is a 5:1 reduction unit. The one I'm running is basically a 6:1. I think the 5:1 will be fine with a 11x6 -12x6 prop. You'll also need a brushless speed controller. I picked up one of the new e flite 20 amp controllers from Rob. They're priced pretty good compared to the others in that size... For the battery I'm using a kokam li poly 1500 3 cell pak. The futabas that the manual recommends are for futaba's that have 17 oz in torque so as long as the pico's are in that range they should be alright.

Jon,

David is getting the 20 amp speed controller and the GWS Pico servos have 10 ounces of torque if I am not mistaken.

I have some hobbico cs 12 micro servos, 35 oz-in. torque.
will they work ok. they weigh 0.62 oz

thanks for the correction on the motor size justin :D

I was thinking of trying some electric powered foamie thing like the picture below, but it all seems so complicated.

I found the above flying thing as well as a flying fish on a new online hobby shop based in Australia, called ozhobby.com.
Nice site just getting started with what looks to be good products.
