I use 30 minute epoxy then thin it with denatured alcohol (the kind winn dixie, wal-mart etc sells). I mix the epoxy 1 to 1 (or whatever it calls for) then mix in about 1/8th alcohol of the amount of epoxy, just enough to make the epoxy thin enough to paint on.

How much does thinning affect drying time and strength?

It may slow down the drying a little but not much. I haven't really noticed much time difference but then I usually just let it sit for awhile and go do something else.....
