Welcome to hobby and forum Dan.

Congrads to the dads on the neat presents. :woohoo:

Welcome Bill!
Definantly learn on the simulator but make sure you bring the heli to some to help check it out for set up. Those are good for learning but known for not being set up right from the factory.

Did you mean Bill or Dan ,, Bill got an Airplane I got a Helicopter ,, I did get the simulator also but it seems like it isn't the most realistic one. I don't know anything about them and would really like for someone to check it out before I start flying and tear it all up.
I also would like to join the club in irvington but noticed you have to have some type of certification to fly out there. How do you just get to go practice on the airstrip on down days. I will join but woul dlike to learn to fly also.

I have a stupid question,, when I opened the box the rotors are not tight ,, are you supposed to tighten them or are they supposed to be loose and the rpm's straighten them ???????

Thanks
Dan

Welcome to the forum, Dan.
Your question about those loose rotor blades tell me that you need help! PLEASE have someone knowledgeable help you with your helicopter!

Not sure what you mean there by "down days"...
You don't have to join our club right away, but you MUST get that special insurance license before you can fly your aircraft at our field. And that's a requirement for any club that is chartered by the AMA (Academy of Model Aeronautics).

If it is convenient for you to come to our field in Irvington, do so. We are there every weekend for sure. We have several members who are well-qualified to give you advise.

I am the new member contact person for our club, and an official club instructor. And although I fly helicopters, there are several much more-qualified helicopter pilots around.

But as far as club information goes, at least you can be assured that I will give you the straight scoop without confusing you with any bull... Email me at fjetten@aol.com and I will give you the information that you need to get that license and what it takes to join our club, if that's what you want to do.

Hey Flyin Dutchman and others reading this. I hate to even post this and was thinking about not posting this,, BUT maybe,, if beginners read it this same thing will not happen again.
This is embarassing BTW,, I am a computer nerd, I downloaded the manual to my new E sky Belt CP copter 2 weeks before I even got it and read it cover to cover. Well I guess that just wasn't enough.
I got it Monday 6-16 and my simulator. I got home around 4pm and played with the simulator for a few hours and had the battery charging while I was doing this.

Well around 730 pm i figured the battery was hot enogh to try a hover and see if I could do it.
May I say the instructions to these things are very sketchy to say the least.
With it still inside the house I plugged the battery in to the unit with no power or batteries in the remote. BIG MISTAKE!!!!!
It started calibrating which is what I expected but what I didn't expect was for it to go to wide open throttle after about 8 seconds.

It came straight for me and by nature I put my hands up to block it and a rotor got me on the left ring finger so hard it shattered the bone like it was hit by a hammer the DR said and peeled the meat from the tip of my ring finger all the way to the 1st knuckle including the nail. HOLY MOLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All I can say is god was looking out for me because my 3yr old son just left the room 10 minutes earlier. It then flew itself around my kitchen like a friggin bobcat was loose in the house.
We went to ER and left it runnin. My neighbor and his son came over, thank god the front door was still unlocked we left in such a hurry, they put a towel over it in the kitchen sink and cut the wires to the battery.

I went to an orthopedic today and he said my finger probably will never look the same but the nerves look OK, Uncut.....

All I can say is I thought I was the most cautious person before this, but the manuals and startup instructions for these animals leave VERY, VERY, much to be desired in the initial startup of these things.

Not sure whats next , I need a little time to recoop and see if I even want to try this hobby. I am going to order the parts to fix it. As soon as I am feeling like it I would like someone to check it out and make sure it is working like it should. I may sell it I may keep it and only fly at the field in Irvington with Pros.
Oh yeah and I have a 3yr old son that thinks it is soooo cool. He has no clue so I may just get rid of it....

Well Thanks for listening or reading and please be safe. THESE ARE NOT TOYS..
Which I knew that...

Thanks
Dan

Flying Dutchman - June 17, 2008 11:13 PM (GMT)
Dan, I'm very sorry that happened! :(

Don't let it discourage you from pursuing this hobby. (I know — easy for me to say...)

But, you MUST be cautious with these things. They ARE NOT toys.
Best not to have your 3-year old near it when you are working with it... And you should keep everyone BEHIND you when you are finally hovering and flying this heli.

This happened with a small electric helicopter. Imagine what a 30-size nitro-powered heli could do to you... :yickes:

Now, WILL YOU PLEASE BRING THAT THING TO OUR FIELD AND LET SOMEONE HELP YOU?
At least come visit us and talk to some of our heli pilots.

I'm very serious about this!

alvinonline - June 18, 2008 01:57 AM (GMT)
Dan, don't feel too awful bad about being a dummie.

I have managed to fire an Estes rocket engine right into the end of my finger and was run over by my 30 size nitro chopper one time. :yickes:

Also, one time before I started putting those plastic triangle shaped anti-roll devices on x-acto knife handles, I was holding two parts together while glue dried, I noticed x-acto knife rolling to edge of table, I could turn loose the glueing parts and grab knife, but would loose my carefully aligned glue joint. I let the knife keep rolling, figured that at worst, it would hit floor and break point of #11 blade.
Nope, it went right through top of shoe, through my big toe and pined it to shoe sole. A bloody mess, but a good glue joint.

Dan, I have you in my address book, but I think that's an old and invalid e-address...

You're Kevin's pal, right?

danarmstrong - June 19, 2008 12:56 AM (GMT)
Hey Flyin Dutchman,
Kevin Who? I am new to the hobby and only know one Kevin from a few years back. Kevin Pugh to be exact...
Anyway, What is your name? Mine is Dan and me my wife and 3yr old will ride out to irvington this weekend if you know what time you guys will be there, we will ride out.
Let me know I prefer sunday but let me know.

Thanks
Dan

alvinonline - June 19, 2008 01:21 AM (GMT)
Come on out Sunday anytime after about 1:00.
Will be folks there for sure by then.
Don't know what Dutchman Frenchie's schedule will be, but you need to hook up with him for sure for all the correct club information.
Just ask for Mr. Frits Jetten.

Flying Dutchman - June 19, 2008 12:26 PM (GMT)
As Alvin mentioned, my name is Frits Jetten.

I must have met you (if it IS you...) years ago, because I have a Dan Armstrong in my address book. I have you listed as Kevin Spragg's friend.

Billyfrost - June 19, 2008 06:26 PM (GMT)
Dan don't feel so bad. As everyone at the field can attest to, I cut off the end of my ring finger and lacerated and broke the middle one with a model airplane. I feel your pain! These things are toys, but they can be very very dangerous and must be respected.

danarmstrong - June 19, 2008 11:40 PM (GMT)
BillyFrost,,

Thank you sooooo much for posting your story,, I know it suks but it makes me feel a bit better knowing that I am not the only one to make a critical mistake.
What is sooo messed up is the instructions are crappity crap. After I read them now it makes more sense but as a total novice I had no idea that the transmitter should be powered up before you plug the battery into thr copter. Sorry is it just me or is this not so friggin clear in the instructions..
It went to wide open throttle and broke , cut the mess out of my ring finger.
It still is very painful, but I think I will come out to the airfield Sunday say around 3pm or 330 and meet some of you guys. I will bring the wild animal (BOBCAT) that injured me and let you guys have a look at it but it is damaged from the incident for now.
I am going to order the parts to fix it today but they won't be here by the weekend.
Anyway I will see if it can be fixed and just come out and observe for now.]

Thanks
Dan
