Title: Rc Turbine Jet Engine
Description: Wondering how much they cost?

Chester Pruitt - May 17, 2004 03:10 AM (GMT)
Gentlemen,
I have been interested in a radio controlled model jet for some time now.

The real turbine engine powered ones really catch my eye with their very realistic sound, smell, and performance. :hyper:

I kind of know how much all the stuff for a jet would cost me except for details about the turbine engines.

Would like to know, about:
What price range is?
What power/thrust range is?
Fuels they use?
Best one/type for jet beginner?

Thanks for any help/advice.
Will check back later.

Have a nice day, :)
Chester

Me to.

I am also interested in the turbine jets.
They are cool just hearing them spool up.

I will be looking for replys about the questions asked as well.

Hi Chester,
Of course, like in Glow engine powered planes there are a lot of variables and sizes in turbines and jets. There are several different ways to go. What are your end goals for flying jets? Do you want to try and be 'economical' and convert ducted fan models to turbine or are you looking to fly some larger models. Do you want a turbine that starts automatically from the transmitter, do you want to build the turbine from a kit or get one already put together. If you've seen Rob's Starfire fly. It's a Yellow Aircraft starfire kit which probably runs around $3-400, origonally made for ducted fan that Rob has converted to turbine. Ducted fan's typically put out around 10-12lbs thrust (or so they claim :>) so a good match is the Wren 54 turbine which puts out 12-14lbs which Jet Hangar Hobbies sells for around $1800 for the turbine kit. You'll need retracts for your jet so you can add another $1-200 for the retracts. Ama says that you must have brakes so for the brake and wheel package you'll need to add another $200. You'll also need a thrust tube which will cost another $1-200. You can be up and running -radio equipment for around $2800. Jet Hangar Hobbies sells an entry level combo with a Bae Hawk and wren turbine for $2,395.00 which looks to be a good entry level jet.

If your goal is to fly larger/heavier jet aircraft eventually then you may want to consider something like my Kangaroo from Composite Arf which sells for $444. They sell a retract package with it for an addition $350 which includes wheels and brakes. This aircraft and many other jets on the market at this time will fly great with an 18lb thrust turbine. A good 18lb turbine on the market is the Jetcat P80 which sells for $3,195.00. Right now the turbine market is changing, jetcat is one of the few putting out a 17-19lb turbine. You can actually get a turbine with more thrust for less now with the Artesjet Super Eagle which puts out 30lbs thrust for $2895. Here is a good site to check out Turbine comparisons. Going this route is definately more expensive but much more flexible on the applications.

Model Turbines generally use propane (coleman powermax) for the startup/ramp then switch to jet A or k1 kerosine for operation. There are a few turbines on the market now that start totally on jet A for k1.

For the beginner I'd have to say that the kangaroo is probably one of the best entry level jets. It's easy to setup and fly and has the turbine on the outside for easy maintenance and for spot checking.

As you can see there are many variables and ways to go. You can learn a lot about setup, pricing and operation of jets from the jet forum located at Rcuniverse

Hope I've answered some of your questions.

You'll need retracts for your jet so you can add another $1-200 for the retracts.

Don't forget to add $$$ for glue to re-mount them

jonkoppisch - May 17, 2004 01:22 PM (GMT)
lol, lots and lots of glue!!!!!!!!!

I've just started into Ducted fan and have a scratch built Regal Eagle that maidened a couple of weeks ago. Just started my second DF project which is a kit bashed 60 size Balsa USA Enforcer. hers a current underconstruction photo.

Justin P. - May 17, 2004 09:39 PM (GMT)
Don't have to worry about buying a fuel tank. You can just make those out of 2 liter coke bottles.

Justin  B)

jonkoppisch - May 17, 2004 10:15 PM (GMT)
Gotta do something with those old bottles, lol. How did the Regal Eagle fly? Did you fly it at silver hill or azalea?

PS, Mississippi Afterburner is this weekend. If you're interested in jets this will be the place to be, fri thru sun.

Mustangman - May 17, 2004 10:55 PM (GMT)
May go to silver hill Saturday with Buddy Steiner to test fly his star fire.......Not sure yet!!!

mobileraptor - May 18, 2004 12:02 AM (GMT)
The Regal Eagle flew at Silverhill, Test pilot was Rob Baker.

First flight was around three min. due to an engine flame out at around 150 to 200 feet. Rob made a expert dead stick landing and the only resulting problem was one of the main struts turned 90 degrees.

The flame out was due to not have the correct glow plug on hand, an OS-8 just doesn't cut it in this aplication.

The second flight was conducted with an enya 3 plug and we didn't try to lean the motor. This resulted in a full flight of about 6 min. and after landing a check of the fuel tanks showed that both main tanks were empty and a half a tank in the header tank (2 oz header tank)

The excessive fuel consumption was more than likly due to an excessive rich run.

The landing was about as smooth as silk, she came in at about 10 to 15 degrees nose up, settled in on the mains and the nose dropped as she slowed. Pretty much a textbook landing.

A few mods have been made, consisting of removing the two 10 oz main tanks and replacing them with 12 oz tank. and I now have the Hanger 9 DF plugs on hand. Also replumbed the the tanks in a series curcuit instead of a parrallel.

I would have taken pictures but the only batteries I didn't charge were in the camera :banghead:

jonkoppisch - May 18, 2004 12:21 AM (GMT)
Congrats, sounds like there's going to be another jet buzzing around the ole field for sure :D We used to have good luck with the Mccoy Mc59 plugs. Look forward to seeing it fly.

I think I'm going to head to Mississippi Afterburner friday and to the fly in at the battleship saturday......

mobileraptor - May 18, 2004 12:54 AM (GMT)
It is my understanding that the Hanger 9 plugs are made by McCoy so it very well may be a 59.

if Andy and I can hook up we may go to Silverhill Sat and put it in the air.

Hears another project for down the road

jonkoppisch - May 18, 2004 12:59 AM (GMT)
Yellow A4? Does it have the scale or sport wing?

mobileraptor - May 18, 2004 01:26 AM (GMT)
It is the orignal yellow A-4 with the small inlets and a cheater hole in the bottom of the wing. I presume it's the scale wing, I don't think the orginal came with a wing option.

Mustangman - May 18, 2004 01:30 AM (GMT)
May go to Silver hill after battleship saturday!!!
Will check with Buddy....

Justin P. - May 18, 2004 02:04 AM (GMT)
I may be a jet man soon. Tinking of getting an F-15 from Rob.

Justin P. - May 18, 2004 02:10 AM (GMT)
Jon,

did you ever get your engine back for your Eurosport? Didn't it flame out due to debree in the engine?

Justin

jonkoppisch - May 18, 2004 02:25 AM (GMT)
I'm still waiting for it. They are sending me a new turbine and ecu. They're waiting on the new ecu's right now before they send it out. Paul said the reason for the flame out was clogged injectors. Not sure how that could be as it was new fuel and there were filters in line  They are sending me a brand new turbine and ecu so I sure can't complain....

Justin P. - May 18, 2004 02:26 AM (GMT)
Sounds like a good deal to me.

Justin :D

Alvin,

Will charge batteries Friday and be ready to fly Sat., After Battleship. If flying doesn't work out, will taxi some more. Have run 2 gallons thru the.91 on the ground. Think it is broke in?? I know the tires are. "bout ready for new recaps.

Ever who Alvin rides with, I will get onboard and chip in.

If we eat too much of Ray's good cooking, might not too many fit in the vehicle unless Billy lets us ride in his new toy :bigplane: hauling trailer.
Plenty of room for Alvin to lay back and digest and with that roof skylight/ventilator open for positive flow through ventilation. you know Alvin. :toiletpaper:

$2.00 gets you in the gate.

About $10.00 gets you on the ship for a tour.

Tell them that you know me and will be $30.00 for everything.
