Title: My trip to northern Georgia

Mike - May 5, 2008 07:29 PM (GMT)
I was making this thread to post some pictures of a Cessna 182 Skylane with a canard on the nose that I mentioned to Billy and Justin at the field yesterday. Figured since I was already making a thread I'd attach some of my other pictures from the trip. This was a few weekends ago, we went to Dahlonega, Georgia for a friend's wedding. I just put the links instead of the full pictures in case anyone is on dial up. Click to see the pics.

I rented the plane in Ocean Springs, and then stopped at Brookley to pick up Dawn. This picture was heading out of Mobile:

Flew over the greatest city in Alabama ;) :

The airport in Dahlonega. It was a tricky one:

The bizarro Skylane. Absolutely beautiful plane. Notice the canard:

And I know how you guys love your NASCAR, so this is for y'all:

I have some other sets from flying around Mobile and a trip we took to Destin, if you guys are interested I could always put them up as well. Anything to get some traffic flowing in this place. :D

Great pics Mike!

Hey, can you give us an idea what it costs to make such a trip, ie plane rental, fuel, etc?

Mike - May 5, 2008 07:51 PM (GMT)
Ouch, going straight for the jugular! ;)

The plane rents for $98 per hour wet (including fuel), or $88.20 block time by starting an account and dumping in a chunk of money up front. If you let them refuel it back at Ocean Springs, there's no additional fuel charge. If you have to add fuel, they will reimburse up to $2.10 per gallon (I think they could stand to adjust that a bit, but that's just my opinion). I wound up adding about 30 gallons in Georgia and logged 7.6 hours total, given us a grand total of just over $700 for the trip. But hey, it beat driving 6.5 hours each way.

Cool = almost priceless :D

How much fuel does the 182 burn per hour?

Nice pictures, Mike!

Was that canard a fixed one or a controlled one?

Mike - May 5, 2008 08:45 PM (GMT)
I was flying a 172, which burns about 8 gallons per hour per the manual. On our trip it actually burned about 8.6 instead.

Frits, I didn't walk right up to it, but I'm nearly certain it was controllable. Never seen anything like it though.

Well, a quick Google search took me straight to it:

http://www.bush-planes.com/Petersen-Wren.html

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peterson_260SE

They claim a takeoff roll of 383', landing in 400', and stall speed of 35 knots in a 182!

I have not seen any pictures with Dawn in them.
Do some maneuver and snap a pic of her all scared and hollering.

Or let Dawn fly and get a picture of Mike all screaming with eyes closed.

I thought Mobile was the greatest city in Alabama  . I used to think the B-52 was a big airplane, but next to the Battleship, it looks so small. :D I kind of have a love-hate relationship with that plane. I worked on them for 3.5 years in Minot, North Dakota. That's a good pic of the C182 with the canard. I had heard of them before but never saw one up close.
