Description: Ideals

Robert S. - March 11, 2008 06:15 PM (GMT)
:bigplane: I was thinking of trying to model the Boomerang. Here is a link:
http://selair.selkirk.bc.ca/aerodynamics1/.../Boomerang.html

Avistar 2 - March 11, 2008 06:45 PM (GMT)
do they make a rc model like that ???

 No. I would have to build it from scratch. :bigplane: It would look different from what everyone else would be flying.

Avistar 2 - March 12, 2008 03:05 AM (GMT)
You have alot of guts if you can pull that off.

BenHere - March 12, 2008 04:01 AM (GMT)
Robert??? building a plane thats DIFFERENT From what everyone else is flying????? hmmm.. IMAGINE THAT !!!!!! :yickes:

Avistar 2 - March 12, 2008 04:08 AM (GMT)
A lot of GUTS, GO FOR IT MAN!

Flying Dutchman - March 12, 2008 10:02 PM (GMT)
I saw an article in some magazine where a modeler had built a RC version of this design...

But that's okay, Robert! Go for it!
You build it, we'll fly it!

I'll offer to test fly it for you...
My credentials:
1. I have flown multi-engine planes before.
2. I have flown and landed planes with one half of the horizontal stab missing before!

Robert S. - March 12, 2008 11:22 PM (GMT)
:bigplane: Mine will be a SPAD . I going to use plastic bats for the fuse. The big fat bat for the main fuse. The little bat for the second engine. A pair of webra .35's for power. I hope to have it ready for National SPADFEST 08 just outside Des Moines, Iowa. June 8th.

:o

I know you can do it! Start NOW!

What is the status of the ToadMotoStuntKite plane? Will we ever see it again?

I was looking forward to tweaking it so it would fly longer than 36 seconds... :D

 It should be out this weekend. :bigplane: It flys good without the frog. But it doesn't look as cool.

Flying Dutchman - March 13, 2008 01:29 PM (GMT)
Gotta have that frog! Ribbit! :D

Billyfrost - March 14, 2008 01:16 PM (GMT)
I think this would be cool for the Robert Skunk Works. A Blohm & Voss BV-141. It's not a twin buuuutttt.

Billyfrost - March 14, 2008 01:17 PM (GMT)
Another pic

Flying Dutchman - March 14, 2008 01:33 PM (GMT)
That's right, Billyfrost, keep giving Robert more ideas!... :yickes:

Avistar 2 - March 14, 2008 02:03 PM (GMT)
Robert you always wanted to stand out amoung the crowd ?

Robert S. - March 14, 2008 02:04 PM (GMT)
 Looks cool, I like it. :spin:

Avistar 2 - March 14, 2008 02:11 PM (GMT)
Good ol Robert there is never dull moment when he flies the skies.

Flying Dutchman - March 15, 2008 12:45 AM (GMT)
Aren't I lucky to be Robert's test pilot? :yickes:

Avistar 2 - March 15, 2008 12:51 AM (GMT)
Did you vounteer Flying Dutchman ?
you know that's a odd looking airplane.

Flying Dutchman - March 15, 2008 01:32 AM (GMT)
I NEVER offer to fly anyone's plane, Avistar2... (Except trainers when I'm instructing).
That would be presumptuous and a bit pushy...

I was CHOSEN by Robert S.!...

Avistar 2 - March 15, 2008 07:45 PM (GMT)
Oh you got drafted?
 :hysterical: :hysterical: :hysterical:
Ok Airman Fritz Good luck.

:newstuff: I finished the wing for the BOOMRANG. :spin: It is a Ruff 1/5 scale, 88'' wing. :yickes:
:bigplane: I got one of the engines mounted. I hope to build the tail section on monday.

Avistar 2 - March 24, 2008 02:40 AM (GMT)
:cloud9: I have faith in you .

Flying Dutchman - March 24, 2008 07:34 PM (GMT)
Just a reminder... This is the full-scale aircraft Burt Rutan built and flew.
He said it was one of the best aircraft he ever designed.

Yep, Robert showed off the Coroplast Boomerang wing yesterday!

The two fuselages are prebuilt and very inexpensive.
(They MAY contain lead, however...) <_<

Here's what a 1996 Popular Mechanics article sids about the Boomerang:
"The Boomerang, Burt Rutan's strange-looking innovative twin-engine airplane, is a weirdly asymmetrical twin that flies more symmetrically than conventional twins, showcases many of Rutan's design ideas."

"The engine on the fuselage, or the set-back engine on a left boom, will keep the plane straight when either one dies. A Macintosh Powerbook controls the flight". (Here's Flying Dutchman's comment: Mr. Rutan must be a TRULY a brilliant man!) :hysterical:

"There is a lot that just doesn't look right about Burt Rutan's 5-passenger Boomerang, the latest surprise to roll out of the hangar at Scaled Composites. The 30.7-ft.-long plane is a twin, but it looks more like a trimotor that lost its right boom and engine. And then there are the wings. They don't match. The right wing is 57 in. shorter than its mates."

Well, Robert, your favorite test pilot is reporting for duty, SIR!
I can't wait to fly it!

Avistar 2 - March 24, 2008 08:30 PM (GMT)
As Alvin would say (IT SHALL BE DONE) B)

Robert S. - March 24, 2008 10:29 PM (GMT)
:bigplane: I finished the elevator last night.

Avistar 2 - March 24, 2008 11:29 PM (GMT)

lloyderc - March 26, 2008 05:07 AM (GMT)
  go robert go

Robert S. - March 26, 2008 03:23 PM (GMT)
 I finished the rudder's (two) and the elevator on the SPAD Boomerang.
:bigplane: I found another Rutan TWIN looks COOL. (But I don't speak Dutch.)

Here is an RC model of it. :yickes:

Flying Dutchman - March 26, 2008 04:30 PM (GMT)
Fortunately, I can still understand it perfectly!
Nice racing plane!

Robert S. - March 27, 2008 02:55 AM (GMT)
:newstuff: IDEALS NEEDED. :newstuff:
#1 :bigplane: Offset thrust?? :yickes: Some twin's have 2 deg. offset thrust.
2 deg. to the Right for thr Right
and 2 deg. to the left for the left.

Should I do this for the Boomerang ??

# 2 :bigplane: Some people on spadworld think I should set the Rudder off centerline 5 deg.
to compensate for P factor or gyroscopic effect. ( what ever you call it.) What do you think ??

Robert S. - April 2, 2008 01:00 AM (GMT)
:D I finished the major parts on the Boomerang.
WING 96 " X 13"
Main fuse 57 "
Out. fuse 47 "
H. stab. 48 " X 11"
Rudder 17 " X 10" ( TWO )
Engines: ROSSI .45 & WEBRA .35
Weight. 10 lbs.

:hyper: I think the weight might mean I need an engine up grade. I could move the ROSSI .45 to the outboard fuse and put Webra .55 on the main fuse. :yickes:
The first flight should be Sunday April 13 th.

:yickes: Justin took it out in combat and hobbytown has it on back order.

Looks to me as if the drawing is of the underside of plane, (at least the front of fuselage), but, if thats the case should the rudder be pointing the other way? Is the tailwheel pointing up? It must be getting late, my eyes are deceiving me.
