Title: RC runways Which is the best Dirt or asphalt

Avistar 2 - February 8, 2008 03:30 AM (GMT)
How you like your runways?
you like your runway packed dirt or asphalt .
Which do you perfer?
I like asphalt runways why Dirt runways kinda have little gritty stones that can hurt covering of your plane.

Robert S. - February 8, 2008 07:11 AM (GMT)
 GRASS

Mike - February 8, 2008 01:31 PM (GMT)
Never flown off dirt, can't say that I'd ever want to actually. The asphalt is nice, but there's something to be said for a SMOOTH grass runway.

TJR - February 8, 2008 02:49 PM (GMT)
It kind of depends on the airplane for me. A well groomed grass runway is great and WWI models really look good taking off from or landing on grass. Other aircraft look better and require a smooth asphault runway, and I like the challenge of touching down on a defined runway like asphault. I don't like the dirt at all  . :twocents:

Avistar 2 - February 8, 2008 03:04 PM (GMT)
Grass? than you would perfer tiff grass or turf grass

Mike - February 8, 2008 03:10 PM (GMT)
Bermuda grass, like a close cut and perfectly smooth golf course green.

Avistar 2 - February 8, 2008 03:20 PM (GMT)
like felt carpet golf course geens is that very fine bermuda like grass.
but it does keep the dust down durning take offs and landings..

ICEMAN - February 8, 2008 03:51 PM (GMT)
GRASS is more forgiving than asphalt, when the landing is less than perfect!

:plane_crash:

Gezzz, RC hobbist can't get a good place to fly these days,
you have to Cripe at the city officals to have one put up and with all the state lands and indain lands inculding privite property around you can't enjoy your hobby too much.

How close you set the mower to for fine cut grass runway?

Flying Dutchman - February 9, 2008 02:32 PM (GMT)
The runway at our previous flying field on Dawes Road was made of Tifton Bermuda grass, like they use on golf courses. Our club had two shearing-type, self-propelled mowers to cut it.

I don't know how many miles I spent walking behind them... :D

Avistar 2 - February 9, 2008 02:40 PM (GMT)
They got recycling lawn mowers now these days with atomic mower blades
I'm sure that's brade made mower blade..

BenHere - February 9, 2008 03:11 PM (GMT)
I've never heard of a brade nade mower blade.. :o It RHYMES good tho... someone should make a song about it. It would have to be a country song tho... i don't think Rappers MOW grass.....And Avistar is that ATOMIC??? or AUTOMATIC? I would think an Atomic blade... would be kinda expensive for cutting grass.

...atomic mower blades...

When your done cutting the grass, it glows in the dark for night flying! :hysterical:

Hey Avistar, do you know what a dictionary is? Or how to use one? You should have paid more attention in English and Spelling classes!

Johnny_J - February 9, 2008 09:13 PM (GMT)
I like the forgivingness of the grass but the asphalt is nice too!
No dirt please!

Avistar 2 - February 9, 2008 09:26 PM (GMT)
Yep try to clean the dirt out your notro engine after plowed in the mud.

TJR - February 9, 2008 11:57 PM (GMT)
I stand corrected. However, you still need some lessons in proper grammer, sentence structure, and spelling. <_<

Avistar 2 - February 10, 2008 12:10 AM (GMT)
No TJR, I stand corrected. You did not read the web page I showed.
I did not mean Automatic, I mean Atomic trade mark Mower blades.
Some people forget the details in writting.
Go back and read the webpage.

Oh, So you guys take off on a asphalt runway and land on the grass off the runway.
look real nice, how much did it cost you guys to obtain that pretty piece of land ?
and did you have to nag the city officals to get ?

alvinonline - February 11, 2008 06:48 AM (GMT)
OK Avistar, this give you good idea of how we be situated most time.

Nice, Mike!

You didn't point out our luxury sanitary facilities... :D

Avistar 2 - February 11, 2008 03:08 PM (GMT)
Either Alvin is dreaming big or this true.
But I asked How much did this cosy you guys and did you nag the city for the property.

Flying Dutchman - February 11, 2008 03:23 PM (GMT)
I don't know what you mean...

It IS an aerial picture that Mike took while he flew over our field Saturday. That's what he said. Mike has a pilot's license and flies full-scale aircraft.

The field is an old landfill that was closed in 1982 or so. We pay $1.00 (ONE DOLLAR) per year on the 10-year lease.

The County put our asphalt runway and the parking lot in. And no, we did not have to nag our County officials. We never even asked for the runway, nor for the two replacements since we moved there. They even seeded and watered the dirt after they were finished.
We have an excellent rapport with the County officials. They are good guys to us. We never even asked how much it cost! We just count our blessings!

We had the fences and pavilion slab put in at the club's expense.
The club members built the shed/pavilion and the pit shelters at the north and south end.
We also ran our water lines and electrical services.
There are two porta-potties by the fence (the "sanitary facilities" I referred to), and we have a dumpster. Both are serviced by outside contractors and paid for by the club.

Nice, eh? :)

Avistar 2 - February 11, 2008 04:39 PM (GMT)
B) Yes very nice, Here we have to fight for a place to fly our plane and whale at the city officals.
between State land and indain lands and privite property
it very hard to fly anywhere. :( How sad...
