From the Greek words for bird and wing. An ornithopter is a flying machine that flies by imitating the flapping of a bird's wings. Mechanically they can be complex.
Leonardo da Vinci wrote about it and drew pictures of them in the late 1400s. Here's one.
Many others tried to fly this type of aircraft unsuccessfully during the 1800s. :yickes:
If you go to google.com, click on Images, and then type in: radio controlled model ornithopter, you'll find out that there are websites dedicated to just these aircraft, from windup and RC MODELS to — get this — FULL SCALE ones with a pilot in them!
