Title: Runway Repairs
Flying Dutchman - May 7, 2007 10:06 PM (GMT)
Today the last pieces of asphalt were scooped up and hauled off. (From the northeastern section of the runway.)
Surveyors showed up and shot elevations for the additional layers.
Here's what one on the surveyor's stakes looks like.

Yes, 4star40, all that I said sum up to be that the runway will be level and flat...
That bees the promise what was made to me...
Don Koval - May 8, 2007 02:39 AM (GMT)
Are we going to paint a line on it? :)
Mike - May 8, 2007 03:14 AM (GMT)
I don't think the line would help anyone anyway.

LOL! :D  :roflmao:  :hysterical:
alvinonline - May 8, 2007 04:45 AM (GMT)
Just try to keep it between the ditches when landing and not be looking at the peanut crop.
OBTW - I don't think that it will be flat and level.
There is a natural drop in elevation from north to south and there will be a crown in the width cross section to shed rain good without any puddles.

The original line was painted to satisfy some of the scale guys who pretend to fly real planes. ;)
The line is pretty much useless when you are standing on the outside of the runway. But it WILL tell you how far off you landed your plane though! :D
The Xs at the ends are international symbols that tell full scale pilots that it's not an operational runway. Not sure if they are required.
We'll discuss it at the meeting.

I'm not sure if they're required either, but considering our close proximity to Roy E. Ray, they are definitely a very good idea. 1:1 scale pilots unfamiliar with the area may mistake our runway for Roy E. Ray if the X's are not there. "Yeah, just head straight South of the racetrack... You can't miss it!" :yickes:
Flying Dutchman - May 8, 2007 06:05 PM (GMT)
Lots of work going on this morning...

As you can see they are adding almost 16 inches at the deepest part!
The County guys are adding a lot of "high quality base", according to the Supervisor.
It's the reddest Alabama Red Dirt I have ever seen!
It will be covered with crushed limestone next.

The X's are showing that the runway is closed to air traffic. It does not really matter if it is a requirement. IMHO they should be there.
P.S. I have never seen a paved model airplane runway without them
jonkoppisch - May 8, 2007 06:55 PM (GMT)
Wow!! Looks like they're serious about fixing everything alright!!!!
:D :D :D

In all my dealings with County Engineer Joe Ruffer (he is the one who got us the field) I have never known him to lead us astray or beat around the bush.
All the County guys we deal with — Ted Lawson, Richard Crist, "Red" and their crews — have always accomodated us ever since we've moved to Irvington..
Alvin and I will be cooking hamburgers and hotdogs and all the fixings for all of them on the last day of the project.
I hope some of you can make it. I'm thinking Friday, but don't hold me to it, 'cause it's obviously up to them.
jonkoppisch - May 8, 2007 08:06 PM (GMT)
I probably worded that wrong.. I'm impressed, they are doing a really good quick job :D
jonkoppisch - May 9, 2007 12:39 AM (GMT)
I wonder how far they got today? Quite a ways the way they've been making progress!!! Keep it up!!! :D :D :D
Flying Dutchman - May 9, 2007 02:10 AM (GMT)
A lot of work got done today.
When I got there this afternoon, the red base had been covered by crushed limestone and compacted.
Flying Dutchman - May 9, 2007 02:13 AM (GMT)
You can now see the opposite edge of the runway from the middle pilot station!
This is looking north...
Flying Dutchman - May 9, 2007 02:14 AM (GMT)
And here's looking south...
jonkoppisch - May 9, 2007 02:23 AM (GMT)
Nice!! They really raised it a lot!!!
Mustangman - May 9, 2007 02:25 AM (GMT)
Time to get that Jet ready Jon.........
Flying Dutchman - May 9, 2007 02:27 AM (GMT)
They added 12-14 inches across the pavilion...
Flying Dutchman - May 9, 2007 02:28 AM (GMT)
And a lot more at the north-east end!
Johnny_J - May 9, 2007 03:24 AM (GMT)
Looks like great progress!
Tell them I said thanks for all the work.
I wish I could be there to help!
jonkoppisch - May 9, 2007 12:02 PM (GMT)
Yea buddy!!!! I'm waiting on a new ecu... Should have it this week!!!
Flying Dutchman - May 9, 2007 10:47 PM (GMT)
Today (Wednesday) the rock got leveled, compressed and watered down.
By the end of the afternoon, the County had brought in dirt to level up the grass "runway" that was east of the runway.
Where you see the red dirt in this picture they will deposit many loads of dirt tomorrow....
Flying Dutchman - May 9, 2007 10:49 PM (GMT)
They started to backfill the runway with dirt from the "mountain"...
Flying Dutchman - May 9, 2007 10:52 PM (GMT)
It's beginning to look REALLY GOOD!
We will have the cookout for the County personnel this Friday around noon.
Try to be at the field if you can.
TONY F - May 9, 2007 11:33 PM (GMT)
 very nice :bigplane:

TJR - May 10, 2007 02:21 AM (GMT)
Wow, this is great! I'm excited to see it when it's done. I won't be able to make it out on Friday, I wish I could, to say "Thank You". I'm also glad that it's going to be done before the Jamboree.
Flying Dutchman - May 10, 2007 05:51 PM (GMT)
Today, Thursday, the County was backfilling the strip east of the runway with red dirt.
Flying Dutchman - May 10, 2007 05:52 PM (GMT)
Lots of red dirt will be needed!
Check this out... They dumped in formation!
Flying Dutchman - May 10, 2007 05:55 PM (GMT)
It will look great after it's all done.
They are working with smaller trucks than anticipated so the work will probably be completed next week.
The cookout is still on for around noon tomorrow.
Flying Dutchman - May 10, 2007 10:47 PM (GMT)
This Thursday afternoon things are looking really good!
More red dirt was added...
