Title: Hughes 500D

My scale build is progressing. I finally got all the lights installed and will give them a test lighting tonight. Still have to get off my butt and test fly the rebuilt/upgraded Evo to make sure all is well and ready for installation.

So this will be like that scale heli that Brian Cabrera flew last weekend?

Similar, but mine is the Funkey (Century) 50 size, prepainted, green and white "D" model (the round nose ). I was going to test the lights tonight, but took the rebuilt Evo into the backyard for the first test flight since a total (airframe and engine) rebuild. It was rock solid in hover so aside from a few adjustments to the throttle curves and throttle servo end point, it's ready to go into the HUghes! :cloud9:

The one at Warbirds was a Thunder Tiger fuselage.

The one Larry has is a FunKey fuselage from Century I think.

Might look like this:

Looks EXACTLY like that, but even nicer! The pictures do not do the fuselage justice.

As mentioned above, I test flew the mechanics last night and was very pleased. I have a few tweeks to make, but I'm confident that the maechanics are ready to be installed. The Evo was smooth before, but now it's like "butter".

This rebuild was by "design", not by crash. I wanted to completely clean and inspect all the parts. The Evo stood up well to my initial learning "process". I also wanted to check the bearings in the Hyper due to the problems others have had.

After tearing the engine down, it looked like brand new, including the bearings. I did decide to replace them with the ceramic/ss bearings. These bad boys are very smooth.

Upgrades to the airframe included:
socket head machine screws/nyloc nuts to replace the JIS head screws
thrid bearing block/bearing for the counter shaft
machined main gear set
machined counter shaft gear
metal swash plate (Quick UK model....very nice)
metal wash out set including sliding & radius blocks
new clutch/clutch bell (hot start from hades did the original in)
GV-1 governor

When I originally build the Evo, I set the head in Hi-stability mode. With the rebuild, I set the head to Hi-mobility. It was a bit different to fly, but not unpleasant. A good airframe just got better.

Another good night for the 500. I got the "tweeks" taken care of on the Evo and in the radio programing, now just need to give the tracking a second look.

I gave the lighting system a test and they worked very well. It's cool to turn the landing light on/off from the transmitter. The blind nuts for securing the mechanics are in, the vertical and horizontal fins are joined, the landing light lens is in, the landing gear is secured and the exhaust nozzle/exhust tubing are in!

Next on the agenda is shortening the tail boom and stripping off the fins/boom supports and under carriage from the Evo. It's getting close!!!

Maybe it will be ready for some night flights Saturday.

I finished it up, now waiting for the canopy glue to reach full cure. Here's a picture with the nav light on!

That looks great Larry.

Neat are the lights in what looks to be tips of landing skids.
Is the wireing internal through the struts and skids to lights?

lrogers - May 6, 2007 08:55 PM (GMT)
Yep, you're right on Alvin. I cut a section of the skids out and did a bit of trimming out with a burr and a Dremel tool. The wire run through the skid pipes back to the strut and then up the backside of the strut. I used white heat shrink to hide the wires.

If this baby flies half as good as it looks, I'm going to be one happy pilot!
