Description: Fingers verses thumbs?

Russell flying Tigers - April 26, 2007 12:48 AM (GMT)
When operating your transmitter should you use your fingers or your thumbs in operating the control sticks?

TONY F - April 26, 2007 01:04 AM (GMT)

How can I get into this discussion without going vulgar.
Let's see, here goes.

I apply a gentle grip to tip of control stick with my thumb, forefinger, and middle finger.

How do you get all three fingers on that little short stick? ;)

Don makes a funny.

But it takes both hands to hold a whopper.
I reckon I got a Whopper Junior With Cheese.

How do you get all three SHORT fingers on that little short stick?

Are you using your shortened finger also? :o

If so, you are using five and three quarter finger to fly a little bitty airplane...
That's a lot...

Just seems easier with less...

I don't think flying ability has anything to do with how many fingers you use.

Well said, Billy.

Let's analyze this...

Let's say we all can use TEN fingers. But would we?
Nah... Of course not. That would be silly!

Nine? Nah... Eight? Nah... Too crowded. Seven? No... Still too many.
Six? Some people use three on each hand.

Five? Four? Many people use four.

Three? Some use a thumb on one hand and a thumb and an index finger on the other.

Two? That's perfect! There you go!
So that's all that's needed to stir TWO sticks.

We all agree that it is virtually impossible to use ONE finger to control a 2-stick transmitter, right? :hmm:

Hmmm, That's all some people seem to need ;) 1 stick with aileron, elevator and a toggle switch for throttle :D

Oh, I'm sorry... One CAN fly without one finger...

It takes NO fingers to do control line (although they have added finger control lately).

But then, it takes a whole hand...
Plus it would set us back about, what, 40 years or more?... :hysterical:

It's a matter of personal preference. What feels best to you? When I flew sailplanes, ran cars and raced boats, I was comfortable just using my thumbs. That was all using smaller 2 channel transmitters.
Now that I'm using a 9 channel radio and flying helicopters, I use the thumb/finger, "pinch hold". That combined with the use of a transmitter tray gives me the greatest comfort zone and (in my opinion) better control. There is no right or wrong answer. :twocents:
