I recieved the Brodak engine about 2 weeks ago. Upon recieving it I saw that the quality was very high. AAC construction with the head and cylinder seperate but bolted to the crankcase with 3 sockethead capscrews and a atandard long glow plug(nice!!).Compared to a .074 COX I have it's hard to tell the difference. Even the intake throat is bigger than the .074.
I thought because of the sheer size of the engine that the power to weight ratio may suffer but I was proved otherwise!
I tapped the cranckcase cover for a pressure for the fuel tank and installed a crimped piece of tubing with a tiny hole opening, into the line going to the tank to prevent too much loss of base pressure that supplies the engines fuel to the cylinder.I finally got to put the new Brodak engine on the test/break in stand yesterday.
I set the needle at a rich setting to break it in and ran two 60 oz. tanks of fuel through it without a miss. As the first tank was ran through I had to richen the mixture a little at a time because the Rpm's picked up and up(a good sign of good break in).
About half way through the secound tank I started to richen it up slightly and man did it scream. This is when I realized that 18,000rpm is a lot without a muffler.
:spin:
I installed it on my trainer RCL that had a cox .049 on it and the cox wouldn't even move the plane from a dead stop. The Brodak was a definite powerhouse
and was pulling on the plane with the electronics strapped to it and a 75% tank of fuel (60 oz. tank).
I was planning on putting a .10 on this plane and with this engine I know I won't have to.
Hits:A lot of power. Props were found at the hobby shop to fit it.
Misses:Does not fit on a .049 mount has to have a larger than needed fuel tank but will pull the extra weight even if it's full 60oz. The name wasn't on the engine
but the manufacturer says that the next batch will have it on them.
Conclusion: The Brodak is a short stroke and the large diameter that allows it to spin high rpm's that is what creates the power of this powerhouse.
This engine is going to be the replacement to the NORVEL that other .049ers are trying to get their hands on. Brodak also offers larger engines ifr they're like this on then look out because if they're like this one it will turn your plane into a screamer!
Hopefully their might be a carb made to fit this one. I'd like to put this on a MINI KADET!
