I might just enter the Sonic in combat this time around.
We feel hot.

Tony has been feverishly working on getting his Ultra Stick repaired for this combat, between also working on his new Groovy 50 pattern airplane.

Tony needed an extra CA hinge.
I gave him a couple and Frits gave him a whole package. <_<

Tony needed a little more yellow monokote.
I offered to buy him a roll at hobbyshop, but Frits is giving him several rolls out of his spare stock. <_<

Tony needed some two milimeter lock nuts for control horn atachment.
I gave Tony my last six and not to be out done, Frits gave him a couple complete sets of fancy control horns. <_<

I gave Tony four green M&Ms thursday, but Frits will be serving bisquits, gravy, and sausage to the Auto Save crew friday morning. <_<

Tony said that he could use some fancy fast servos.
I offered him a selection out of my spare servo bag.
Frits, it is time to step up to the plate once again. One of those new 2.4 gig SS Spectrum radios would be nice. :roflmao:

Wasted effort on the Monokote, I doubt that Tony or any of you other combaters even show Sunday, looks to be very windy and I will win by default.

Tony, you know that you can't fly in 20 - 30 MPH winds.
Specially from the NW where that tree line makes those nasty turbulations and wind shears. :windsock:

All I have to do is make one flight and I smell an easy victory. :checkerflag: :twocents: :twocents:

Combat took place today (4/15/07) between four contestants: Alvin Reed flying his Sonic, Robert Sanderson with a combat models Yak (it really looks nothing like any Yak, but it has Russian stickers at least), Johnny Turner flying his Tailgator combat wing, and Andrew Smith with an all new plane, a flying wiffle ball bat with a coroplast wing and tail.

Round 1 was pretty uneventful. Andrew had engine problems and was late getting up and deadsticked early. Robert got up late as well and stayed pretty well out of the mix. Johnny got one cut on Alvin that round, if I remember correctly.

Round 2 had a little more excitement. Andrew deadsticked again fairly early, leaving the other three to battle it out. As a side note here, Andrew had a beautiful deadstick landing despite the fact that his plane was actually gliding backwards with its nose pointed into the stiff breeze. The heat was getting a little boring, so Justin commented on how a midair would really spruce things up. I agreed.

We got our wish, and here's what happens when Robert Sanderson and Johnny Turner get together:

Alvin cut one of their streamers literally seconds before their impact, and brought it in for a landing after finishing the timed heat. Unfortunately, his landing was somewhat sub-par, and the poor Sonic took a little bit of a tumble causing damage to the horizontal stabilizer. Alvin got right to work on the repairs.

After repairs were made, the final round took place between Andrew and Alvin. Andrew was on a mission to take Alvin out, having received no points in the first 2 rounds due to not completing the timed event. Alvin thought it wise to just stay away from Andrew, as with 3 points already accumulated, there was no sense risking things. Apparently he forgot about this so called strategy, and got right in the path of Andrew's bat-plane. Amazingly he was able to complete the round despite the damage.

Upon the completion of the time period, Alvin once again had to brave the turbulent air and land. And once again, his landing left a little something to be desired.

I think he claimed that missing half of his elevator and stab had something to do with that, but I'm not buying it.

Congrats to Alvin for yet another ACMA combat victory. Here's to another exciting event next month.

Dang!!

Oh well. Got to see the midair anyway.

Good pic Jon and a nice report mike I hate I missed it :( but I stayed home & work on the groovy but the stick is ready for combat.

Mike - April 16, 2007 02:48 AM (GMT)
One other thing I forgot to mention, when Alvin went to making the repairs to his Sonic, he couldn't quite figure out why the CA wasn't sticking. Turns out using CA debonder does not hold balsa together quite like one would hope.

alvinonline - April 16, 2007 04:44 AM (GMT)
Jon and Mike, thanks for the great pictures and combat report.
Most excellent work.
And thanks to all who braved the wind and came out to fly and help and to Don for coming out in weather he does not favor, to CD another great combat event.

Well, like Dale Ernhart said one time.

"It don't matter how much sheet metal I leave on the track as long as most of my car crosses the finish line first with me in it". :steeringwheel: :checkerflag:

ROV-4U - May 15, 2007 11:10 PM (GMT)
I think Andrews spotter made the difference too!
That would be me! :pilot:
I won't be able to makit to the next combat but I'll most likely have something ready for the one after.
I'll still be on the rig playing with ROV's.
