Title: I'm missing something here (first electric)

Mike - July 12, 2006 03:52 AM (GMT)
I soldered up my connections on my new E-flite 20A brushless speed controller tonight and my 3 cell 1100 mah lipo. The lipo is showing a 11.7V charge, so I figured I'd go ahead and hook things up and see if it's setup properly. I turn the transmitter on, and with the throttle at mid stick, plug in the battery. I hear one beep. Bring the throttle to low, and hear two beeps. Then as I advance the throttle, the motor kind of jerks both clockwise and back counter-clockwise, while making a series of shorter, higher pitch beeps. It never really powers up and spins in any direction. What am I missing here?

I haven't read the directions on my eflite speed controller so I'm probably doing this wrong but..... I just turn on the receiver with the throttle closed. If the motor doesn't actuate then I have the throttle reversed (which you can check by opening the throttle all of the way for a couple of seconds and see if it beeps and is controllable then). I think that by starting at half throttle you're going into the programming mode...

Mike, you always turn on your transmitter and plug the battery in with the lowest throttle setting. If you have a throttle setting other than low it confuses the speed controller or puts it into programing mode.

Hey Billy,
Where ya been? How was Sulphur?

Mike - July 12, 2006 01:53 PM (GMT)
I just tried it again, leaving the throttle at low. After turning on the transmitter, then connecting the battery, I get the one beep, followed by two beeps in succession. Then when I advance the throttle any amount at all, it goes to chattering back and forth and it sounds like it's tapping out morse code. This last about 2-3 seconds and stops. If I move the throttle anywhere from just above low to 100% nothing happens. If I bring it back to low and then advance it again it repeats the process. Trying to search around on RCGroups too, not having much luck yet though. Thanks guys.

Reverse your throttle and try it again? The beep then 2 beeps sound right. Of course you should leave the throttle at low until the end of the 2 beeps. You say it starts chattering. Are you talking about the speed controller chattering or the servos? You may want to also try swapping a couple of components, ie receiver and battery just to check it..

Yeah I've tried reversing the throttle, that didn't do the trick.

I don't have another battery or ESC (both are brand new), but I do have some normal Futaba receivers I could try at the house. Using a 4 channel GWS one now. I've got it all with me today, if I get some time I may bring it by HobbyTown and see if someone can help me troubleshoot.

One of the connectors from the motor to the speed controller was loose. Took Jake about 10 seconds to figure that out, and LT another 30 to be kind enough to solder it up while I waited. Working like a champ now.

Spoke too soon. I was running it at full throttle for probably about 20-30 seconds or so, then the prop stopped turning and it let the smoke out of the motor. I shut it off and let it sit, hooked it back up a few minutes later and it doesn't want to spin up. Turns over a few times and stops, that's about it. Battery is still at 11.36V (11.1V pack).

I guess I need a new $50 motor, and hope the next one doesn't burn up also.

Actually what I need to do is stick to glow/gas planes I think.

That sucks Mike... get a Eflight park 350 outrunner this time, its a little bigger and should have a tun of power!

Later,
Jake

I think Justin had said the 300 was the biggest that would fit in the tiny plastic cowl the Corsair has. I guess I have some time to think about it though as I now have a much larger space to fill in my hangar.

Jon

I appreciate the offer Jon, but the F100 found it's way home with me yesterday. Maybe with the longer landing gear it comes with I can keep those fifteen dollar 17" props in one piece. B)

Nice!!! I look forward to seeing it fly!!!
