To make potion make sure you wear the Cloth Glove and walk in flowers. A dialog box should popup if you find some herbs. At this point you'll be able to make potions with assistance or alone. If you desire assistance, your must have a companion who also knows herbal lore. Simply type in his/her name in the white box. I hope this helps.
