Scientific Name:
Copadichromis sp virginalis 'Gold'

Common/Trade Names:

Country of Origin:

This virginalis is only found at Knanda on lake Malawi’s northern shore line in Tanzania

Habitat:

Max Size Male:

10-11cm

Max Size Female:

8-10cm

Tank Requirements:

This fish a very peaceful and can be kept in tanks as small as a standard three foot tank. I have four males and eight females in a four foot tank, and have never had a problem with aggression between males or shown to females. These fish like a sandy substrate and are cave-crater spawners.

Diet/Feeding:

Copadichromis sp virginalis 'Gold' is a plankton feeder in the wild, but does readily accept and foods in the aquarium. I feed mine a mixture of Flake, pellets and home made food mix

Suitable Tank Mates:

This fish is very peaceful and must be kept with suitably peaceful fish

Breeding:

Copadichromis sp virginalis “Gold” Malse build bowers next to or under rocky outcrops. This gives the fish protection from above. A males territory might only be a meter in diameter. This fish is typical of most Malawi Cichlids and are maternal Mouth brooders

General Comments:

These fish are a truly spectacular fish. Males when spawning go dark blue to nearly black with a brilliant yellow blaze that extends from the tip of their nose to their tail. Females a bright silver and may show a light blue shine during spawning. These fish are still not very common in the hobby here in Australia but are will suited to a community tank set-up as they are a very peaceful fish.
According to Ad Konings, this fish may not be C. virginalis. This fish doesn’t fit the description given to C. Virginalis when they were first described in 1960. It is also the only virginalis found below 36 meter in the lake.
