Title: My "kids"

Spiny-Rhino - December 7, 2004 01:52 AM (GMT)
Hi there!
I guess everyone here is new, so I'll start out by saying that I am a long-time reptile lover/keeper. Currently I only have my 2 iguanas, though neither of them are green igs.

Dwayne was my first ig, and she is a 2 year old spiny-tail iguana we've had for almost a year now (the name is a long story, as we found out he was a she when she decided to lay us some eggs...) Our second is our new baby rhino iguana we've had for about a month now (he/she's only 2 months old). The baby, "Ray-Ray", is growing incredibly fast. We think he/she was the last little runt of the clutch, and was very thin when she came to us from the St. Pierres. Luckily she has taken to her new home, and both our "kids" eat like champs, getting 2 meals a day. Baby has gone from 8" or so to over 12" in just 5 weeks!

Glad to find another forum to talk to other owners, and I'm going to try to post some pics of the children...hope it works!

Welcome to IIG and awesome iguanas! I love the spiny. I have thought about getting one several times when they were available in pet stores here. I once found one sitting on top of a container of bird food. He had escaped since they keep them in terrible little cages. I wanted to slip him in my jacket and just leave but I gave him back instead. At the time I had too many green igs and I just couldn't take him.Now i think I would take him if it happened again. <_<

That rhino sure looks healthy! He has nice little chubby areas. lol. How in the world did you get him? Is there someone that breeds them in captivity for the pet trade? Aren't they very endangered? I'm not famliar with St. Pierres.

I have wanted a rhino iguana since I was a kid and first found out about them, and that was atleast 15 years ago. After college, I moved across the country and gave away my hognose snake, and left my family, close friends and my dog (who my parents now think should stay with them since he's getting old and they're about to retire) behind in NY.

My boyfriend (whom I live with), knew how much I missed my pets and bought me the spiny for my birthday this year. He had never had pets of his own, and didn't understand why I love them so much. He now loves the spiny more than anything (maybe even more than me, LOL) even though she does not have the nicest temperament. He bought me the baby rhino as an early Christmas present this year when I finally found hatchlings for sale.

Rhinos hatch once a year around October. I believe they are on the "Threatened Species" list and there are a few breeders in the US. We decided to get ours from the St. Pierres because they are reputable, their facility is "sterile", and the difference in cost was minimal (total with shipping was $289). The baby was shipped overnight from Florida to California, and arrived in good health, though thin. She ate and pooped with in 24hrs of arrival. If you are interested in getting a hatchling, I suggest you try to get on the waiting list.

Here is a link to the St.Pierres site and a pick of our baby's mom!

Hi again, just figured out how to insert pics (thanks for the help!), so here are a couple of the baby rhino. One is her on her first day, and the other is her just a day or two ago to show how fast she's growing!

Thanks for the link! There are some neat pics in there.

She's a really neat little ig. You can see how she's filled out in the second pic. I would like to get a rhino, but I think I'd have a hard time caring for it. Plus my Angelo would die if I brought home an iguana that gets bigger than he does. ;)

Sort of OT- what sort of hognose did you have? I have an eastern that's solid black on top, has a red and black mottled belly, and red eyes and lips. He's a real devil snake. lol. He's probably the most famous snake in Mississippi because he eats in front of anyone and I've used him in herp 'shows' for kids all over the place. They love to watch him eat!

I had a true melanistic(ALL black) eastern hognose.Unfortunately he wouldn't eat and we turned him loose.(he was a wild caught in Alabama..where I lived at the time)
