Title: Learning and advancing
Description: Help for an old newbie

dgrove21 - August 6, 2005 07:56 PM (GMT)
I have a simple request, and maybe this is the site that will help me fulfill it. For various reasons, I came only recently to use the XBOX, and Halo 1 and 2. It is my favorite game. I just got on XBOX Live ,and am getting annihilated routinely. I am 56 years old, but would like to get better. Okay, now here is my request. If you were me, what are the paths to improved skill in Halo. I have subscribed to quite a few lists, but quite frankly, they seem more to be discussing how much people love the game or speculating on new features for new versions.

Are there any webites, or even books, or mail lists where I can learn what I need obviously to learn about using various weapons, and becoming better at the game. So, because of the regularity of me getting creamed even by those supposedly at my level in LIVE, any tips of even the most basic kind might be helpful.

Thanks,

dgrove21

halo.bungie.org has great halo 2 montages where you can watch and learn awesome snipes. also, the not so common sense strategy guide can be found there, at http://halo.bungie.org/gameplay/stratguide/ , and it is very helpful.

Thanks to both of you for answering so quickly. Another thing I have wondered is whether you have found other XBOX games, either single-player or XBOX Live, that compare to the Halo total experience. I have tried a few, but none seem to approach the whole total package experience provided by Bungie. It is not just one aspect but almost every aspect that makes it stand out. Does anyone have other games that you enjoy as much or more than Halo 1 and/or Halo2?

I enjoyed Red Dead Revolver its kind of a mix between a shootem up and a western but it has a realy good story to it, ufortunatly its not onlinge although u can show people online that ure playing on it.

Some opf the best parts of the gams are the slow mo show downs where u either win or die.

yeah, dgrove, i had the same problem. before H2, I used to play Operation Desert Storm, Freedom Fighters, and James Bond, but after I played H2 for a while, everything just seems to suck.

My other favorite Online Games are Rainbow Six: 3 Black Arrow, and Splinter Cell Choas Theory, myself prefer realistic games such as Ghost Recon, but i too love Halo and Halo 2, Conkers Live and Reloaded is also a great online and offline game just because it is so funny.

Thanks for all your replies. I have also found almost the exact same games that I like. Rainbow Six and Chaos Theory, though I haven't yet tried them online. One thing that has bothered me in my very short time experience with XBL, is the amount of immaturity and profanity. It almost seems that people think it is necessary or cool to curse. It ruins my experience. Also, what is the protocol and etiquette regarding building a friends list? At 56, I am not aware of any friends that even have an XBOX, much less play online. Do people just invite strangers at random to be a XBL "friend"? What is the accepted practice?

Yeah i totally agreee the amount of immature people on xbox live who seem to think that if they loose a game they have to insult you, be racist and scream down thier headsets is shocking and definatly taints the experiance.

When i first started on xbox live some 3 years ago none of my friends had an xbox either let alone xbox live so i just played quick games with strangers for a while, but in some games you will find a group of people who are having a laugh and you'll get talking like i did, then after a while you will start playing with each other more often and soon a friendship will arise, this is what happened with me when i started on xbox live. You can just add strangers to your friendslist as if we didn't no-one would really have much of a friends list, im sure that some of the members of this forum would be happy to exchange Gamer tags with you and play some games on halo.

There is a lot of profanity, and sometimes, when annoyed, I contribute to it. Some people like to piss others off because it makes them feel cool. If you don't like it, hit start, "y", "recent players", select the one that utters constant profanity, mute voice.

If you find some amicable, friendly people that you play well with, send him a friend request. I get plenty of friend requests from people I don't even remember, or people I cursed off, so you don't have to worry about sending a friend request and looking stupid.

And... if you consider yourself older, you can visit the 2old2play.com website. You can find friends your age at http://www.2old2play.com/modules.php?name=...ngleGame&gid=24
Theres plenty of people just like you. So you wont feel left out.
