Title: True Blood

Sofia - April 9, 2007 03:04 AM (GMT)
I got this Google Alert in Gmail about Brook that I had to share.
QUOTE
Casting update on HBO's True Blood, the new show based on Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse mysteries. British actor Stephen Moyer (Ultraviolet) is onboard as the vampire Bill Compton, Brooke Kerr as Tara, Ryan Kwanten as Jason Stackhouse, and Sam Trammel as Sam Merlotte. Anna Paquin plays the heroine, Sookie Stackhouse, a young Louisiana waitress whose her life is turned upside down when Bill walks into the place where she works two years after vampires 'came out of the coffin' on national television. The series is executive produced by Alan Ball (Six Feet Under). Shooting on the pilot, "Strange Love," will start in June.

(Anna Paquin. Holy freaking Anna Paquin is the lead!)

I was afraid that maybe it was all a dream and that they were talking about a totally different Brook Kerr so I looked up 'True Blood's profile at IMDB ( http://imdb.com/title/tt0844441 ). While I didn't find any mention of Brook in the IMDB profile, in the message boards it mentioned Brook had been cast as one of the characters. It had been confirmed at the the official website of one of the writers, Charlaine Harris ( http://www.charlaineharris.com/ ).

I'm very excited.

I have very little information about the series and Brook's part in it, however I am *very* excited!

OMG!!! :cloud9: Congrats Brook! Thanks for posting this :)

And here's a fansite dedicated to the series/book:

http://www.southernvampires.com/

And here's some info on the character, Tara:

QUOTE
Role: TARA THORNTON - Smart, articulate, impatient and beautiful, Tara does not suffer fools gladly; in fact, she doesn't suffer them at all, which is why she frequently gets fired from her jobs after telling clients/customers what she really thinks of them. Good friends with Sookie, Tara winds up working at Merlotte's bar with her, where the plain-speaking Tara informs an oblivious Sookie that the owner, Sam, is obviously in love with her. Tara herself has a thing for Sookie's brother, Jason, but she's more concerned about Sookie's potentially dangerous attraction to a vampire.
Female - African-American - 25 to 27

Thank you! I was curious about the character, but I hadn't tried too hard about finding out more about her.

I got a few more Google Alerts which basically confirmed the above. If any one is interested:

our girl will get a fine aa love interest eventually. but for now, this will do.

whitbrookfan4life - April 9, 2007 05:11 PM (GMT)
ok. a little bit more info. they're apparently deviating far from the book's storyline for the role of tara. these are details straight from the mod at the book series' community on lj.

QUOTE
The storyline is already screwed up for a variety of reasons, but mainly because Tara is not a waitress and has never worked with Sookie. Tara is a local business owner that was a friend of Sookie's in childhood but they drifted apart as the years went on; they reacquaint themselves after Tara gets mixed up with the vampire scene. Tara is generally a minor character; her biggest appearance, as I seem to recall, was in book 5.

so, it's a negative thing for preserving the books, but good for brook bc it means more inclusion, or so it appears :)

timelessaire - April 9, 2007 09:17 PM (GMT)
This is GREAT news! Way to go Brook! Especially an HBO series. Even though I never read the books before, this show sounds so interesting.

Alicia Keys - April 9, 2007 09:51 PM (GMT)
Series never stay true to books when done in this manner, so, eh. If it means more time for Brook, I'm willing to suffer it, ya know.

Honestly, I'm still freaking out. I didn't get my text til after 1. I just...I can't even deal right now.

exactly, me too.

Alicia Keys - April 9, 2007 11:29 PM (GMT)
If they stay relatively true to the series and cast other people, I don't think people will be all that upset that Tara has been made into a major character. Plus, the people behind this series seem to have sense and respect the books, so I'm gonna hold out.

But I'm sure if I adored this series, I'd be a little worried too. But since I'm just a huge Brook fan, bring it the hell on.

haha, ppl are already upset. Tara wasn't intro'd until the second book, her job change but that's to expected when they do a series off a book, gotta expect variations. Sucks for them though but great for me as Ive never read the books :)

Go Brook I am so excited to here this! She will shine no doubt! :D

whitbrookfan4life - April 10, 2007 09:46 PM (GMT)
her imdb still isn't updated, but it's now soap news. wonder how long it'll take the passions nbc site to announce and congratulate her.

http://www.soaps.com/passions/news/692/Pas...w_Horror_Series

Fans of Brook Kerr (Whitney Russell Harris) will get to see her in a whole new light in upcoming months. She has just signed with HBO for a major role in their upcoming series True Blood. Based on The Southern Vampire book series by Charlaine Harris which tells the stories of vampires and psychics in a small Louisiana town. Brook will play a clever and crafty young woman who gets a job working in a bar with a psychic played by Anna Paquin. The show is being directed and written by Alan Ball, the same man responsible for HBO's Six Feet Under and the film American Beauty. Shooting for the series is set to begin in June.

Sofia - April 10, 2007 09:53 PM (GMT)
It's definitely looking more and more interesting. I'm thinking about reading the book series when I get some free time this summer.

Nuri, I think this is where I was able to set up receiving: http://www.google.com/alerts

-Super Save-A-Bunch Store Manager - The manager of the Super Save-A-Bunch store. He's terrified when a furious Tara quits and threatens him with retaliation from her recently paroled boyfriend.

-Customer - This white male customer at Merlotte's snaps his fingers at Tara for service, and gets an earful. He meekly apologizes.

Ok, thanks for all the added details about Brook and her character.

You know I'm happy as punch as the rest of you. The last two years since they seperated Brook from Justin on screen have been HORRID. She hasn't had anything real to do but beat herself at the convent, pimp T, and sex up Dud. I'm glad those days are over. Brook is far to talented for what Passions didn't give her outside of Foxney with Justin and some of her work with Ben.

I think the series has a great shot of doing well and the people upset that it's not going with the book need to GET OVER IT!! I don't think they have time to go completely by the book series and most wouldn't do that anyway. Variations are always made. And if Brook's character is a big variation, then sobeit. No one is more deserving for her talent to be put to good use.

As for that blonde kid, he was on a WB show that I watched..the one that Jesse McCarthy was on. He was on the first season and was the "surfer" dud but imo, I didn't feel his character was needed and after awhile, the show also agreed. I can't remember how I felt about his acting truly. He was a surfer and playa on the show so beyond that, I don't remember what I thought about him.

Good luck to Brook and the show getting picked up. I've been doing the happy dance since I heard when the news first broke. :happydance:

whitbrookfan4life - April 18, 2007 07:35 PM (GMT)
summerland. that's the show he was on. and yeah i hope he can act well.

Yep, Summerland. (Resident Jesse McCartney wife here  ) There are quite a few clips of Summerland on Youtube so if anyone wants to check out the guy's acting skills, go right ahead :)

UMMMMMMMM YEAH!

I know I dont post here (taking hard side eye from Nuri, Sylv, Het, and everyone else who feels I need it to.....just pile it on, I'm a horrible Brook supporter) but HELL TO THE YES!

Totally psyched for Brook's new series. I can't flippin wait!

And yes, I look forward to Brook's Tara going off on many people that try to get smart with her. I can just see Brook killing it. I really can't wait to see her range. She is going to KILL IT!

So YAY again for her......*as I go back to being a sucky supporter*......lol.

currently, it's drifting around that the show won't premiere until january 08.
it still hasn't been greenlit as a full season, just the pilot. everyone cross your fingers that it will be!

and, just to reiterate, ppl are saying that tara's character description for the show is totally different from the books. some are suggesting that she's being depicted as the 'typical sassy black girl,' and that that's alan ball's m.o. i'm not really familiar with his work, besides six feet under, which i don't watch. they're also saying that series tara is a mixture of book tara and arlene. so maybe that's why.

that's what Ive been reading too. I must say I didn't much like her moving from a store owner in the book to a waitress but I just figured it was a change to facilitate easier story telling, or whatever. And books to movies/shows are hardly ever exact same.

I never watched Six Feet Under, my dad loved it but I found all the characters so damn depressing and boring. It did have a black guy but he wasn't a typical black guy from what I remembered. And I'm not just talking about him being gay he just never came off as stereotypical.

whitbrookfan4life - May 12, 2007 09:35 PM (GMT)
well that's a good sign then, i guess. but honestly i don't even want to buy into what ppl are saying, although it's hard not to. i just want to judge the show for what it will be when it premieres. everything else is hearsay. but at the same time i want to share what ppl are saying who know something about the books.

Hetairai - May 12, 2007 10:33 PM (GMT)
the book fans are more upset about the Sookie casting than anything else. I'm trying to not pay much attention to it either. I have no intention of reading the books, I just want to enjoy the show.

Zoe Saldana - May 13, 2007 06:00 PM (GMT)
yall need to do what i do. be oblivious to what folks r saying...

its rather fun.

bring on tara!!

forfoxandwhitney - May 18, 2007 06:05 PM (GMT)
Thanks for posting the info from the article and it's nice to see Renee on that list as well. I will say that, I'm not worried about these people who are tripping. Anne Rice hated that Tom was chosen for LaStat and though I was not impressed with Tom as much as Brad Pitt and Kirsten Dunst in the movie, people moved on from that.

If whatever changes gives Brook more screentime at the character then I think it's great. I have seen a few scenes of Six Feet Under though I wasn't a regular viewer. It was a good show with great actors and great writing. It had edge and I think Alan being a part of this it has a great chance of success with him behind it. They got nominated for actors, eppys, and writing. I think that Brook is in great hands. I will say, though I like Anna Paquin, when I look at her and the leading guy, I'm not sure that Anna seems like she will fit against that actor so I can understand concerns from those that are not wanting her. I see too much youth when I see Anna though she is a good actress.

whitbrookfan4life - May 18, 2007 07:43 PM (GMT)
yeah, anna is very young. but you're right, her acting is dynamic, i think she can pull it off. i was also very happy to see REG in the article.

Here's an update on True Blood from Charlaine Harris's message board:

The latest word on the show. The pilot was completed last week, and it’s being edited, I believe in New York. When that process is completed, the HBO execs will view it and either approve or dump the show. If a positive decision is the outcome, the rest of the episodes will go into production and the show will be put on the HBO schedule. I’ll let you know as soon as I can.
