Women in Black and White
In 2000, the U.S. Census determined that of the more than 108 million voting age women living in this country, over 24.5 million self-identified racially as members of non-white segments.
How do women of differing races view the overall status of women living in the United States? Observing that so little research exists, topical explorers Paula Penn-Nabrit and Leslie Morgan Steiner have joined forces to collect data and assess the findings
As a starting point, their position holds that the women’s movement in the U.S. is stagnant due to its failure to include sufficient consideration of the critical fallout driven by the intersection of race and gender. As a result, the impact of these factors has been dismissed from the public discourse. This survey of women is intended to test these two premises:
1.) The conflict between black and white women is at the core of the history of the women’s movement in the U.S.
2.) Moving toward a resolution, or at least a broader understanding, of the conflict between black and white women will help shape the women's movement into one that is more inclusive and comprehensive both nationally and internationally.
You can participate in the data collection portion of their study by taking a few minutes to express your views on race and gender. Simply click on this link or copy and paste this address into your browser:
