Title: Would these make good topics for a book
Description: A book on everyday philosophy

1. We tend to think that it is okay to place blame based only upon the outcome or effect of an action rather than based upon a person’s intent. You may know what I’m talking about if you know the ethical philosophies of John Stuart Mill and Immanuel Kant. Mill believed that actions are right or wrong in proportion with which they promote happiness or unhappiness. Kant believed that it had to do with the good or bad intent or the person.

Some people may not think they would like Mill’s society because if a well-intending person did something with disastrous effects then they may feel they are a bad person.

- but maybe that’s because we expect a so-called “bad” or unwanted event to come with a punishment or a blame game- if something goes wrong we can fix it, but nothing says that we have to blame somebody if they didn’t have angry intents. Our society has no mechanism for separating a bad event with a punishment.

But it is a waste of time and resources to punish someone for bad thoughts, even though someone with bad thoughts is usually considered a less ethical person than someone who was well meaning but made a mistake.

A good substitute would be to have a society in which, instead of punishing people when things go wrong, but not ignoring bad will in a person, when a problem happens, we fix the problem AND we fix the person’s bad thoughts (by rehab and psychology, not electric chair!!!)

3. Maybe people don’t like to apologize because they don’t like to think they hurt people’s feelings….maybe that’s why they get mad when being forced to apologize. When we are kids, some of us are taught to think it’s the end of the world if someone gets upset at us or if we hurt them slightly. What we do when we “overguilt” them by making them feel worse than they have to (by overexaggerating how bad the other person feels) is make them afraid to apologize because they are afraid of thinking that they could have hurt someone THAT much.

8. Isn’t loving someone only because they are “your” child kind of like saying you only love yourself? I mean, if you only love them because they are YOURS, and not love them for themselves is that really loving them for the right reasons??

12. United States is right because it is the United States??- since that circular philosophy has no bearing on the supposedly already existing standards of right and wrong, then anybody with that kind of theory literally has no morals, because whatever the US does, no matter how it relates to existing morals, it will be right! Also, if the people who tend to peddle these nationalist theories around really believe anything the US does is right, then why are they worried about the wrong people getting into office? It won’t be “wrong” if the United States does it!

13. It is actually more offensive to have certain rules (especially being legally enforced) that pertain to offensive words and actions than to say the words themselves, because there are many things which offend people- f.e. I am allowed to say your grandmother is fat, but certain, specific words are not allowed?? Well, tell me this- what makes something offensive? Is it maybe because someone was offended? Huh? Who’s to say what is offensive and what is not? Why certain words? Why not others? Why not certain things you have said about someone’s mother? It’s basically like saying that those other things are not offensive- it’s basically DENYING THAT YOU WERE OFFENDED. If I, the policeman, arrest Jim Morrison for saying the f-word and exposing himself in public, and I refuse to arrest the man down the street for calling a you a faggot and denying you a job, I am telling you, indirectly that you were not offended. Free speech is either all or nothing.

14. The very nature of laws, being made by fellow man for fellow man to follow, cannot be infallible- there are such things as good laws as opposed to illogical, unfair, or oppressive laws, but the nature of law itself is less of a statement of “You can’t do this,” as much as it is a statement of “If you do this, we’ll do that,”- it is technically a threat. Also, if people in general are supposed to be fallible and need laws and guidance, then how do you know the people who made the laws are trustable?

23. Why do they put gender on ID cards and the like. It’s not like identifying you with 50% of other people is going to help that much. BTW, if it is for identification, then why put M for Michael Jackson, if he doesn’t look like one?

27. You can’t get mad at a person for “hurting themselves” or making the “wrong decision” because isn’t the entity making the decision the self also? Who’s to decide which ‘self’ is valid? Also, there is no such thing as the ‘wrong’ decision- it is the person’s opinion whether or not the outcome is desirable.

29. It is ridiculous to say that a symbol or flag is good or bad- what if someone just likes the shape of the swastika but they don’t know what it means. Why is burning a flag worse than burning something else you see as symbolizing the flag or the country. If I accidentally burned a flag, it would not be as insulting as if I purposely burned a blank paper and said that I thought it symbolized the country. It is stupid to claim that a flag touching the ground should be burned. Also, in North Korea or somewhere like that a picture of a leader gathering dust is illegal- stupid, I have pictures of John Lennon with dust on them and I am a big JL fan.

For that matter, why does something HAVE to be uncreative just because it insulting- can’t it be intelligent but morally off color? Can’t something be smart but bad? Like evil geniuses?

30. Why would anyone be guilty because they protest- forget all those stupid adages about how he who protests is the guilty party. That literally means that you just have to take your punishment no matter what and if anyone speaks out against you accusing you of something then you are guilty. HUH?

31. No knowledge of a law IS a viable defense (unless it is something like killing someone- something that is hurtful everywhere and, whether or not the law says anything about it, the action still reflects a dangerous person or moral character). You shouldn’t have to “know” there was a law about murder or theft not to do it, but for something like local custom or some tax legality (something that cannot be called common knowledge- common knowledge being something which logical principles can prove, regardless of national or cultural boundaries) then there should be no punishment or at least just be a warning.
Furthermore, no one can tell you that you “should have known” about the law- first of all, there are people who have never heard of the Beatles. There is no never-fail proof that everybody has definitely learned about a certain thing- there are still very many chances that someone may have missed something. In other words, there is no one seminar that everybody has to have gone to that forced them to have knowledge about a certain thing. Second of all, you can’t change the fact that the person didn’t know about something; they can’t change it either, so why punish them for it if they really didn’t know? You think the person TRIED not to know it? (And don’t try any sneaky, backhanded “How do I know that he really didn’t know?.....so we better consider him guilty until proven innocent,” bull).

32. It is important to give someone innocence until proven guilty- it is not to be “nice” or “right” or “fair”- it is just a logical principle and, in fact, is important to be observed for both the prisoner’s and the authority’s benefit! The prisoner gets a fair trial and the authorities are able to find the real perpetrators. Also torture only gets people to “admit” something just to stop the torture.

34. What problems that arise when kids learn one concept when they are little- and then find out about all the things that exist in this world to disprove it! When we are little, we learn that you can do anything when you are older and that you can have any job- until we find out that some people are turned away for being gay or that some people can’t be a certain gender. It is shocking when you learn about things like the draft when you have been told all your life that boys and girls can do anything they want and also how no one will bother you or come punish you if you mind your own business.

40. My, the hypocrisy of some politicians when they claim to be able to do bad things because of “human nature”, but then when something such as terrorism against Israel comes up, they get all compassionate and altruistic and they somehow “forget” about human nature ruling all. How come, at the beginning of the debate or conversation, they claim to support what they do (say, the Iraq War) for reasons of compassion or virtue, but then, later on, when someone questions their policies concerning the skewed nature of corporate business and how it screws poor people worldwide, they scream “Survival of the fittest!!”

41. Why do people, especially when talking about things like the Holocaust, get more upset about the unimportant details of the events (i.e. swastika use, Nazi salutes, etc.) and therefore get more upset by a bunch of punk loving Nazi skinheads in the basement than they do about REAL POLITICAL Nazis and real neo-totalitarians? Isn’t it more respectful to the victims to make less of a chance for it to happen again by having realistic and not symbolic enemies?

44. The Crazy Genius May Not Be So Crazy….Intelligent people are usually the ones with problems or are anti-social: they are intelligent enough to realize many of the problems of society- whether they realize it or not- and they are merely reacting to the negative aspects negatively- and they look “crazy” merely because they are not like everybody else.

45. When a person is not allowed to do something because they are a (girl/black/gay), it is ridiculous to say that they are complaining just because they are a (girl/black/gay)- how can you have any proof of that? If the people who are allowed would have been upset if they weren’t allowed (i.e. a straight man getting kicked from his job), then you can’t prove that the (girl/black/gay)’s being a member of the excluded group was their reason for protesting, as both the excluded and included groups had exactly the same reaction towards not getting included. (This also sort of goes with the paragraph up there about those who are considered guilty for protesting)

48. Do I think my beliefs are right because I believe them……or is that WHY I believe them?

49. How is there any real gauge of “pain tolerance”? If you can tolerate it, then how can it be called pain? Huh?? It’s a philosophical concept anyway, not a medical one.

50. It is NOT childish or naïve to think that just plain refusing to show up for a war is a good idea. People assume that when people say “Don’t go to war” that they mean a certain country like the USA- when I say don’t go to war I mean the whole world!! Soldiers from every country should resist- there will be no imbalance of one country having no soldiers and wars will only get less and less bloody and we will be forced to solve problems the grown up way again.

51. It cannot be an “opinion” to say that all women are emotional or whatever- it is, at best, a theory- it can, in reality, be someday proven right or wrong. Even if people don’t have the information, it isn’t non-provable in itself. So there is no “that’s just my opinion” defense in statements like that.

52. It is foolish to be proud of your country because you didn’t choose to be born there and because people are supposed to be objective about morals.

53. For that matter, what does being born in a country have to do with loyalty to it? You could have been transported to a concentration camp in a foreign country and your kid who was born there forced to have citizenship there.

57. The working class is chastised for asking for more pay or for asking not to get their heat shut off because they are supposed to have a duty towards others and the company and to do their jobs, but tell me this- what “duty” is more important- the duty of an employer to buy his daughter a pony for Christmas, or a worker’s right not to freeze? Workers have been brainwashed to feel bad and guilty about asking for more (i.e. enough) while employers are under no such obligation. WTF?

76. It is NOT okay for a parent to do something to a child without their consent because the freedom parents talk about does not include the freedom to take away someone else’s freedom (like circumcision or spanking). Didn’t slave owners use the same “I can do what I want with my property” excuse?

78. How come when you hear about a car crash or something, and it turns out that it was a total unavoidable accident, people try to get you on board with more punishment for the driver by asking how you would feel if it was your family? Whether or not the outcome was sad/sadder/saddest or not has NO BEARING on the PAST. How upsetting the event was doesn’t change how guilty the person was or who was guilty.

82. Gay marriage is no different than straight marriage.

1. You can’t call gay marriage different because what they are doing is the exact same thing as straights- anti-gays wouldn’t be mad if gays weren’t trying to do the same thing as straights. There would be no mention if they weren’t trying to create the same exact thing except for the sexes of the partners.
2. Second of all, you don’t marry someone’s private parts- you marry their soul- the id, ego, and super-ego, whatever.
Is the Catholic Church telling me that I’m supposed to be attracted to someone’s BODY? Sounds pretty naughty and sexual and non-spiritual to me….All in all, the only difference between gays and straights marrying is who the partners are- the thing they are doing is not different.

103. Many people seem not to understand simple logic or sarcasm in questioning laws and rules, possibly because they simply can’t believe that you believe what you believe!
You: “Okay, so if we send drug addicts to jail for hurting themselves, then why not bulimics and anorexics?”
Idiot: “You want to send anorexics to jail? You have some strong opinions there.”

104. Why do there seem to be laws or at least rules about insulting a leader or politician- do they get offended more? It’s not like the insult itself is threatening.

105. For that matter, why are stars and rich people entitled to more security if they can afford it- and you can’t use the excuse that they are officials because Bill Clinton still has them….and damn the day Jessica Simpson becomes one. One could say it’s because they are well known, but it’s not fair that they deserve protection just if they can afford it.

106. If we need ultra high-tech mechanisms to notice if our employees are on drugs, then what does it matter?

112. How is it saintly to suffer but sinful to hurt yourself?

114. If it really is human nature to just want to better yourself and no one else, then how come a white person would hate to have a person challenge his wealth or power or even get a few rights just because he’s black? Wouldn’t it make sense just to hate everyone else equally because it is too confusing to pay that much attention to race and sex?

120. Hitler isn’t “inhuman”- if millions of people were killed by bears or killer bees, then no one would be crying half as hard. The very thing that upsets us is that he was human.

123. People use arguments of survival of the fittest to justify the ruling classes oppressing the lower ones with police brutality, but then if a protestor killed a cop, they would go crazy and forget what they said about survival of the fittest- isn’t the protestor who killed the cop fit now too? Ah, I see! It’s only fair when we win! But I thought you said life in this system wasn’t fair! SHUT UP COMMIE!

126. We learn to ignore and accept global problems between countries like Palestine and Northern Ireland by learning to view them as “backwards” or “violent” parts of society, and therefore, they just need to be written off as so and ignored. Well, they wouldn’t have been considered “violent” or “backwards” if they weren’t having problems, so writing them off is just an excuse to ignore problems. Peachy.

131. Should someone who looks black but is not get affirmative action? What about someone who is black but looks white? What if they weren’t discriminated against because they didn’t look black enough? What if they looked black but STILL weren’t discriminated against?

182. Why do kids who drink think they are being adult….well, if drinking is for adults only then…….?

194. Maybe the reason we take what people say so seriously (“She said she hates blacks; that’s it- there’s no reasoning with her now!”) stems from when we are little and our parents tell us not to question other people’s opinions and to respect what they say- as a result, and maybe a little because we don’t want to consider someone stupid enough to say something they don’t mean, we take everything seriously.

195. How is it that sometimes we teach kids to do the opposite of what they would do as adults (such as teaching them not to have sex), but other times we try to instill them with certain values before they are ready or at times when they are not necessary (such as sitting still in church- there’s plenty of time to perfect that and it’s not important to being a productive person anyway).

196. If children always seem to follow what their parents believe, then where did the parents get their morals- aren’t future generation good enough to make their own decisions? Even if adults aren’t expected to follow their parents’ beliefs, if they formed all their theories while children under their parents’ watch, then they won’t learn anything new. Are new generations, whether adults or children, supposed to get inherently stupider as time progresses or what?

213. What’s worse: A Holocaust revisionist who is deeply hurt by what happened, whether or not it happened to 100 or 6 million people; or a person who fully accepts to current statistics and doesn’t feel sorry at all?

214. Why do we consider it worse to kill a police officer than an UNARMED CITIZEN?? It’s more likely that they guy who killed a cop felt threatened, so, to make a blanket statement, it should be LESS shocking!

222. How come when people join a socialist group, everybody expects them to know Karl Marx’s favorite food and birthday, but nobody questions what we know about the American system when we actually participate in it?

225. It is incorrect for an authority to simultaneously claim ideological reasons for forcing someone to change and threatening physical force. It says simultaneously, “Do what I’m telling you to do because it’s right for all these reasons, and also because I’ll kick your ass if you don’t do it….” The person being told what to do forgets that there are moral reasons and only follows rules to ward off punishment, therefore giving them no predictable moral compass in their actions. Whatever……

228. Psychologists and scientists refuse to try to fix nonscientific and personal matters that don’t pertain to genetics and chemicals or at least use some kind of formula because they subconsciously think that they shouldn’t be dogmatic by getting into supposedly opinion orientated issues.

234. Prejudice and hating certain aspects of a culture are the opposite! One is thinking a person who happened to be born in a certain culture is necessarily supportive of what it teaches, and the other is disliking the culture itself, regardless of what culture it is and feeling bad for anyone who has to live under it- post-judice- judging something AFTER you learn about its characteristics.

238. If drug addicts should be punished for hurting themselves, then why aren’t anorexics put in jail?

And some extras:

*How can a kid knowingly avoid alcohol use until he’s 21 because he “knows” he may get hurt (because he doesn’t “know” how to use alcohol), but after that still be considered too young to drink? How can you be aware of your own “unawareness”?

*What would happen if a transvestite man got married to a transvestite woman and they both put down the opposite gender of how they were raised- would they be able to get married, but be forced to “put the right gender” correspondingly? If an official’s answer would be no, then that would prove that anti gay marriage is just to force people to identify with the “right” sex and not to make it truly heterosexual. See?

*Why aren’t minors allowed to buy certain cough medicines if they are allowed to buy vanilla (35% alcohol)? Hype trumps reason once again.

*Analyze- should a 29 year old who has been in a coma for 15 years be able to drink or vote?
