TV sports commentaries and ESPN in particular have gone into the toilet. The otehr night I caught an "expert analysis" on the AFC between ESPN's Ron Jaworski and Michael Irvin. It was two windbags dropping names and stats in a HYPERACTIVE MANNER in an attempt to make us believe it was "insightful".
I know ESPN had a hit with the bitch-fest "Pardon the Interruption", where two numbskulls yell back and forth at each other... and FOX has a smaller hit with "I, Max", where even number skulls score "points" for worthless arguments. Jaworski and Irvin were attempting to join in on the TV argument bandwagon, and like the others, it sucked. I guess the gimmick is to have announcers who have 'takes'. However, no matter how hollow these are, they're still allowed airtime.
Consider Jaworski's "insightful" comments on the Broncos. "They've lost too much on defense! They lost John Mobley, Ian Gold and Bert Berry...there's no way they can replace all of that!"
True, the Broncos DID lose those guys. But Mobley and Gold both missed the entire second half of last season (or more in Mobley's case), while the team finished second in the West and made the playoffs with no contribution from the two. Mobley went out around week 6 with a spinal problem suffered at Baltimore, while Gold went out about 2 weeks later with a leg problem in the Pittsburgh game. As for Bert Berry, I don't recall too many offenses doubleteaming him. Bert was steady, but any douchebag knows that he picked up his stats as a result of offenses double-teaming Trevor Pryce.
The Broncos have picked up Champ Bailey and John Lynch in the secondary. Champ is a huge upgrade over Deltha O'Neal. Lynch is..well, Lynch. For the big loses up front that Jaworski babbled about: the Broncos picked up Raylee Johnson to fill in at Berry's spot. Raylee has had decent sack numbers over the past few seasons. At linebacker, the guys who played the MAJORITY of last season are still around (Al Wilson, Donnie Spragan and Jashon Sykes), plus they've added first-round pick D.J. Williams.
I'm not expecting the Broncos to be awesome this year. The point of this post was to point out how brainlessly idiotic Ron Jaworski's national "coverage" of the Broncos was a complete sham and waste of airspace. The guy made three "important" points and without any research or reporting, I blew away all three of his points. I obviously only paid attention to the Broncos segment, so I can only imagine what delusional reports Jaworski gave for the rest of the NFL. If all you have to do is YELL, while comparing last year's roster to this year's, then any buffoon can fill the shoes of Jaws.
