I haven't been a big fan of the "modern generation" of game shows. They're usually good for one viewing and that's it. Plus, I don't like the lighted sets that look more like a concert stage than a TV studio. Give me Bob Barker and his 1970's flowered doors anytime.
But I watched one episode of this and was generally entertained. The show's a bit of a simplification of the old "What's my Line", where contestants have to guess a stanger's occupation. The contestant has to match 12 people with their occupation, based on looks and three gimmicky "cheats". Like all modern game shows, it's dragged out slowly and built up for "drama". It took one whole hour for the contestant to go through all 12.
They're also trying to create their own catchphrase with "Is...that..your identity!?!" Call that the damning legacy of "Who wants to be a Millionaire" and "is that your final answer?"
The episode I watched had two things going for it. 1-- one of the strangers' occupations was "NFL Football Player". As the camera showed the strangers, I said "holy shit! That's Ray Crockett!!". Yup, it was Ray Crockett (starting CB on the Broncos back-to-back Super Bowl teams).
The other thing I liked about the show was the host, Penn Jillette. I was a big fan of "Penn & Teller's Bullshit" on Showtime and think the guy's a very entertaining speaker. He's a good con man, so he offers no empathy or help for the contestants. They can never tell when Penn's bullshitting them or telling the truth. But it'd be cool if this show was on cable.... it'd be great to hear Penn bust loose on someone when they guess wrong. "You dumb mother-fucking douchebag!! There's no way that guy was a Russian Immigrant!!"
I've now watched this show once, so I'm done. If it continues and proves successful, I'll be rooting for Penn to receive some acclaim and more popularity from it..
