Title: Weekly HeroClix bludgeoning

I was relatively unaware of the HeroClix game until I received a giant box of miniatures as an Xmas present. It's a strategy/board game using various miniature figures of superheroes and villains as your game pieces. Each figure is different, with special abilities and bonuses. For instance, Firestorm can fly and shoot stuff, while Batman can hide on the ground. Each figure is worth a certain "point value" and you build your team up to a specified amount. The amount can vary depending on how big of a game you want to play. You can distribute your points however you want: go for a buncha' little guys, or load up with a few heavy hitters.

Found a group and began playing the game around April. I'm still getting my butt kicked every week, since I haven't mastered all of the little nuances and gimmicks. Usually some bozo uses "outwit", "perplex" or "contact with Oracle" to cream me. I just load up my group with figures I think have a diverse group of powers.

This week I used the following team in 600 pt. game, 4-player game:
-Man-Thing
-Marvel Girl
-Circe
-Crimson Dynamo
-Sabretooth
-Dr. Doom
-Etrigan the Demon

I wanted to use Doom since he had "perplex", which allows you to boost other figures' numbers. But wouldn't ya know it, another player threw out some screwy "feat card" that rendered perplex null and void.

Sabretooth was my lowest valued figure, so I used him as my blocker/engager/punching bag. I sent Sabretooth, Man-Thing, Crimson Dynamo and Circe into the backside of a skirmish between two other players. Crimson Dynamo held his own against the Hulk for awhile. Circe was able to mindcontrol Supergirl, but the ensuing attack missed. Player 3 turned tail and left the 3-way skirmish, so my guys got demolished by Player 2's team of Prometheus, Hulk, Batman, Supergirl and Jinx.

Demon, Marvel Girl and Dr. Doom took off on the other side of the map. Beat the snot out of Players 4's Capt. Atom, but then Prometheus and friends caught up to us. Marvel Girl survived by running around the map and managed to take out Player 3's Vertigo. She got taken out by Player 4's Batman shortly after (yeah, TWO Batmen in the same game. Weak).

Fun game, because usually 4 player games break down into two sets of 1 vs. 1. This time we managed to get everybody fighting everybody else. I need to read the rules and see about this frickin' "outwit" power. It was used way too liberally by my opponents. For example: I'd be on the opposite side of the map and suddenly my "invulnerability" power had been "outwitted"...even though I wasn't fighting with, or anywhere near the guy with "outwit". Same situation happened when Sabretooth's regeneration was erased. I call "bullshit". I should make my OWN "feat card"-- "power of the Beyonder", which allows me to make up rules and mess with anyone as I see fit. I could find a Beyonder picture, print it out on some good card stock, laminate it and they'd never suspect the screw-job.

Oh yeah, I was a bit shocked that NOBODY (but me, of course) knew who Prometheus was. (the JLA villain...not the mythology figure). But then I remembered that Prometheus hasn't really been seen in the comics since 1998 or so. He debutted, fought the JLA and returned for the "new Injustice Gang" story the year after. Bizarre how he made such a big splash, then disappeared.
