Title: Free Comic Book Day Recap
Description: Beagle Boys = Dudley Boyz?! Discuss!

I drop by on Saturdays to pick up my junk. Nothing regular this week, but they gave me a buncha' the Freebie stuff.

Batman Strikes- Egads, this was terrible. I have a hard time with Bruce Wayne trying to be ..as they say on the streets.. "hip" and "cool".

Marvel Adventures- Re-telling of Amazing Spider-Man #1, with Spidey and the FF. Nothing terribly interesting and like all the flashback stories it left me feeling: "been there, done that"

Flight (Image comics)- Fun whimsical lead story, and a few panels really illustrated a sense of wonder. Namely the flying whales. Backup story, "the Robot and the Sparrow" resembled "Calvin and Hobbes" a bit, but would make a nice kids' tale. Not my cup of tea and I don't have plans to buy it again, but it was a pleasant diversion. Biggest question I have about this book-- at the beginning Image publisher Erik Larsen ends his little intro column with "It's all good". He's a turd, but PLEASE tell me that phrase is NOT his version of "Excelsior".

Uncle Scrooge- To me, the highlight of last year's Free Comic Book Day was the Carl Barks Scrooge/Mickey flip-book. This book makes Barks the highlight for another year. It's like Christmas...if it was everyday, I'd probably hate it. But once a year, it's something to look forward to. This is another reprint of the first Uncle Scrooge story, but I noticed something new about the Beagle Boys: they reminded me of ECW's Dudley Boys (pro wrestling). Goofball villains who dress alike and wear stupid glasses, or in the case of the Beagles, masks. Dudley Boys = Beagle Boys. Discuss!

Bongo Comics Gimme Gimme Giveaway- Contains 2 Simpsons stories, 1 Futurama story and one Dr. Strange spoof featuring Plazmo the Mystic. The first few pages of the Simpsons story had me violently laughing. The rest was so-so. There's also a hilarious spoof on the old "Superman invites you to Palisades Park" ad. I guess the Bongo Simpsons also spoof comic books the way the TV Simpsons spoof pop culture.

In addition, I picked up Adam Strange #2-7. Count me among the masses who enjoy it. Also, Captain America #257 from 1981, for a buck-- a half-length filler story with Cap, the Hulk and "Matrix 8", a Neo-Nazi science group. The story resembled late Silver Age Marvel plotting, and could probably fit in any era of Cap. For what it was, I was satisfied.
