I won't pretend to be an expert on Hong Kong or try to impress you with my make-believe "understanding" of the genre (besides, if I wanted to act all cerebral I could run your ass over with Battleship Potemkin references), but this movie is a helluva' lotta' fun.

Part "Johnny Dangerously", part "Enter the Dragon" and part "Tex Avery Show", the movie never takes itself seriously. Set in...oh hell, I dunno, 1930's Hong Kong, it's a nonstop slaptick/action festival. The nefarious Axe Gang rules the streets and only a small run down apartment complex can stand up to them. A lowly vagabond and his dimwitted friend enter the complex and pose as members of the Axe Gang. A dispute over a haircut stirs things up and gets the conflict rolling.

There's also a vicious landlady, who's like a psychotic Sister Mary Elephant. Plus Donut the shopkeeper, a laundromat fairy and a common laborer. Two musical assassains enter the fray in one of the coolest over-the-top fight scenes I've seen in awhile. Like something out of a Dr. Strange story, it rivals any duel we've seen in the various comic book movies.

Lots of sight gags, slapstick and a hefty mixture of "tear the entire fricking town apart" action. There's even some symbolism that could get the college film students to spurt their jism. It's subtitled, but don't let that stop ya'.

Best time I've had at a movie theatre this year. (Or, at least in a movie theatre where I have to keep my pants on). Some of the effects and comedy can get overblown at times, but that doesn't prevent me from giving it a 3/4 numb butt! Go see it.
