Title: "P.S. I Love You" Discussions
mischa8 - December 22, 2007 05:41 AM (GMT)
i decided to start a separate thread for this. discuss anything here about the movie. i know eventually you'll all be dying to say something! i thought it was a very sweet movie, but totally different from the book. anyway, i'll leave it at that for now, until most of us have seen it and are able to discuss it.
monique - December 22, 2007 12:18 PM (GMT)
OMG!!!! I just came home from seeing "PS I Love You", and it's awesome and I cried in a few scenes. Gerry was wonderful and Hilary did such a good job. It was a very touching and emotional movie. Not only a love story, but witnessing what people really go through when their love ones passed away.
My tears rolled down my cheeks every time they show a memory of Gerry, like when he is alone in the bar and Hilary sang a song to him. I thought it was beautiful. Even the audience sounded like, "oohhhh..." because even if Gerry is dead, he has such a powerful presence in that movie that you can just fall in love with him.
Anybody else saw the movie? *hrt*
mischa8 - December 22, 2007 05:38 PM (GMT)
yep....i adore it..and i'm seeing again tonight after work with my sister *hrt*
starshine - December 23, 2007 01:35 AM (GMT)
lol I liked it a lot too. My friend and I saw it last night together. :um: One thing though, I thought was strange, was they never really showed him sick. I mean, he was seemingly healthy and then he was dead, yes a few mentions of him dying of a brain tumor but other than that, nothing else. It was a lot different from the book. I still don't know why Gerry couldn't have been Scottish. lol The whole concept is weird to me anyway, first of all, dating in general after losing your husband is weird to me, and then dating another guy with the same accent is too strange. I don't know, I would think it would be a constant reminder that he's not him. And then on top of that being with his old best friend, though she didn't know, I just thought was terrible. lol The book has a lot of flaws in it, so it's not the movie's fault, I think it means well, and of course Gerry is incredibly sweet, and I even cried, I think twice, but there's just a few things in it that are like, glossed over and I wanted that. No, I didn't necessarily want to see Gerry sick, but I didn't want it totally forgotten either. I know, he's Gerry, and it would be good because he's in it, but as far as story line goes, I wasn't thrilled about it. But, to give the movie a chance, that's how the book is written too. They showed my favorite scene but they didn't give the backround to it, so it was just like a five second thing, which kind of irritated me. lol The last letter read by what's his name..Daniel? if Gerry read that I would have cried, but since he didn't, I was actually ok. lol But again, I think that's very similar to the book. The movie made more sense in more places than the book, I have to say, but then it kind of glossed over stuff that the audience was supposed to 'already know' or something...like the audience read the book and knew what was going on, which I remembered the book, so I knew generally what was happening, but I think someone just walking into it, would have major questions about this movie. lol
I thought 'no, a vampire slayer is not an actual profession' was hillarious, especially since Gerry played Dracula once. lol They also had a funny line about tarts which I thought was amusing.
OH I ALMOST FORGOT! When they were arguing in the beginning, and she wanted more in her life before she had a life, or something, I was like, 'you're married to GERRY! What more could you possibly want?!' I seriously would live with him in a cardboard box and I wouldn't complain. She wanted way too much. hahaha
I tried to be as nice as I could, since it's a Gerry movie, but I think I'm being fair. I gave it a B. lol
*luvgb*
GypsyDy - December 23, 2007 01:36 AM (GMT)
I SAW IT!!!
Oh my god!
Well I knew they would change the book---actually I think I liked the way they changed most of it better.
Took my kleenex and good thing---cause I was crying up a storm, when they showed Gerry, even somtimes when they talked about "Jerry", of course sometimes I laughed also!
I thought they did a fabulous job, Hillary was perfect and you really believed her in the role.
The thing I thought the most is that this time we saw Gerry without the mask and swords and capes and etc. I mean we did in like Shattered, except it was a over the top role and he turned out to be a fink in it----but this one, well Jerry was like our Gerry----I MEAN THIS IS THE CLOSEST WE WILL PROBABLY EVER GET TO KNOWING WHAT IT'S LIKE TO BE WITH GERRY FOR REAL!!!!
Hell they even used his own bracelets in the movie!
He was INCREDIBLE and WONDERFUL and so SEXIE---hell I fell in love with him all over again! *rock*
What I"m going to tell my friends is that the movie was sweet, wonderful, and sad all at once---that anyone who has ever loved or experienced grief cannot help but be touched by it!
None of the other guies in the film could hold a candle to Gerard! I mean he was just so wonderfully perfectly human male!
On one hand I felt sorry for Holly as she lost him---in the other hand I had to say that she was LUCKY she had him as long as she did---cause I've never had ANYONE like that!
I WAS PLANNING TO GO SEE IT AGAIN TOMORROW---BUT THE TRUTH IS I'M EMOTIONALLY BRUISED FROM IT---I HAVE TO LET A BIT MORE TIME GO BY BEFORE I CAN GO VIEW IT AGAIN!
DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT THE REIVIEWS ARE OF IT----BOX OFFICE NUMBERS, ANYTHING???
ALSO DOES ANYONE KNOW IF GERRY'S SINGING IS ON THE SOUNDTRACK???
IF IT IS I'LL DEFFINATELY HAVE TO GO GET IT!!!!!
LAST THOUGHTS..... *luvgb* !!!!!!!
GypsyDy - December 23, 2007 01:49 AM (GMT)
STARSHINE AND I POSTED LIKE A MINUTE APART!!! *LOL*
So now to comment on her comments----I thought the guy playing Daniel was just WRONG I mean at least the Irish guy was semihot---but the Daniel guy was just SAD, no way could you see her going for HIM!
My Mom had not read the book, and she liked it, thought it was really GOOD! Maybe not everyone scrutinizes things the way us girls on here do!
Well I don't think the Irish/Scottish thing was in Gerry's control. I mean in the book it was Irish right? Guess they just went with that!
Some of the book was not really to my taste---but I chalked that up to me being older than you girls---so to me the movie ended up being better.
As for her and the Irish friend, well that was weird, I mean I think she was attracted to him cause he WAS like her husband---but then him being the friend was kinda freakie! I mean could you see them REALLY being together with their memories of Jerry always between them??? To wrong!
But I wonder if she ever really can find someone to replace Jerry? I mean I"m not sure I ever would have been ablt to---but then she is YOUNG so maybe. I think it would be someone else tho----someone with no ties to the past.
Guess that answered what I wanted to---unless I think of something else---but I would rate it a A!!!!! Maybe that's just cause I love Gerry----but I think it was good, probably won't get any awards tho, I'd be surprised if it does!
My only real complaint was that Gerry wasn't in it more---as for the DEATH scene or SICK scean, well that was not in the book either---I was expecting a sick hospital scene at some point and relieved it WASN'T there. I think they wanted you to think of Jerry as alive and not as sick---that that was what she remembered of him!
starshine - December 23, 2007 06:38 AM (GMT)
I didn't say he had a choice of whether or not to be Irish or Scottish..I just thought he should have been Scottish. It was my personal preference. lol
alisha - December 23, 2007 06:54 AM (GMT)
Okay I have to be honest I really didn't think that I would like this movie, mainly because I usually don't like romantic movies. I actually have not had a chance to make it to the movies yet to see it for myself and I haven't read the book but after reading all of your "reviews" I know I'm going to love it.
It sounds like such a sweet, touching yet funny movie. I'm actually planning on going to see Sweeny Todd with Bran so I think now I'm gonna make him stay for a double feature (weither he likes it or not).
GypsyDy - December 23, 2007 09:33 PM (GMT)
I don't like WAR movies and I loved 300!!!
Lets face it, if Gerry is IN it, WE ARE GONNA LIKE IT!!!
As for this one----who ever said it was a "romance" novel???
It's a SURVIVAL novel!!!!
As for going to see it----Good God IT'S YOUR ONE CHANCE TO SPEND TIME WITH GERRY AS HE MUST REALLY BE!!!!
Don't squander the big screen EXPERIENCE!!!
GO GO GO!!!!
Starshine, WELL I THINK WE ALL WOULD NOT HAVE HAD ANY PROBLEM IF THEY HAD CHANGED THE COUNTY TO SCOTLAND *sco* INSTEAD OF IRELAND!!!! *LOL*

mischa8 - December 23, 2007 11:41 PM (GMT)
dyann---*lmao* i've actually seen it twice, and attempted to go a third, so you're on the right track, haha.
anyway, sorry i didn't get here sooner...busy weekend..have i mentioned i hate working in retail??? especially during the holidays?!?!
ok....here's my two-cents. i'm in love with this movie.
the bad thing about seeing this the first time tho, was that i tore it completely apart, comparing it to the book and whatnot. it was SO different...some things i was really, really REALLY hoping would be in the movie. like, for me, gerry being sick was SUCH a vital part of the story--that should've been in it, at least the travel agency part. maybe a few scenes with him complaining of a headache or something. that would've done it for me right there. but just having him healthy one second and dead the next, i didn't like that...actually, the only part that really bothered me in the movie was that holly carried gerry's urn around everywhere she went for the first few months. i thought it was very morbid and just....strange. maybe its just me lol.
btw---was that not the LONGEST opening of a movie ever??? lol...it had to have been at least 15 minutes before the credits went on...after the argument (which cracked me up AND made me cry...go figure) AND the striptease. i thought it was great lol.
starshine---since i read the book and was a fan of it long before they made the movie, i know exactly what you mean. just like gerry being sick, there were parts in the book that were not necessarily overlooked, but like you said....glossed over. i was hoping that there would've been something with holly's brothers...but i guess it wasn't exactly important to the real story.
the way the letters were given to holly...very different. i like both ways--the book way and the movie way. they both gave anticipation. and i liked that it wasn't just holly involved...gerry wrote letters to his parents, her parents, sharon, and denise.. very cool.
gerry...was he great or what? the story was really about holly, but they managed to get gerry in there as much as they could. i loved the scenes with gerry's spirit..him singing with the guitar on the couch, only him at the karaoke bar..gave me the chills. OH...was anyone else cracking up when holly fell off the stage and the next thing you see is her in the hospital? i thought that so damn funny..and then she opened her mouth and i lost it lol. poor gerry...you could tell he felt awful about it. and he looked adorable doing so haha.
so then i saw it again for the second time last night...it was a lot better the second time around, i have to say. i guess it was because i already tore it apart the night before lol. i noticed something tho...the part in ireland with the "wild dog" (SO CUTE, by the way)..he seemed very reminiscent to his dracula..i don't know if it was the way he was talking or the way his mouth was moving...but thats what i got out of it lol.
i cried a few times...holly got the letter from gerry in ireland and his spirit was standing there next to her reading it..he put his head on her shoulder..it choked me up. when holly was singing and imagined only gerry in the audience, i cried really hard. it was SO heartfelt and sad, but somehow relieving--if that makes any sense. oh--i cried when holly came crashing into the bar and cried to her mom. (btw--you remember that bar from a thread we had a while back? if you ever go to brooklyn, i HIGHLY recommend teddy's). and at the end...when holly was hugging daniel saying that gerry was really gone, that she didn't feel him around her anymore...omg i was bawling so hard. the story is so sad, i think i got to crying harder just thinking about it and how i would feel. i couldn't imagine going thru that. i hope i'll never have to, but you never know, and you can't stop it from happening.
about your comment as to why they didn't change the story to scotland...i'm pretty sure they did it because cecelia ahern is irish, and the story was ALL irish originally. so much of ireland was taken out of it--yes, they kept gerry irish and changed their vacation to ireland instead of greece or whatever it was, but i thought they'd want to keep a little of the irish spirit involved. ireland-to-scotland probably would've been a easy transition, but then the story would've been COMPLETELY different. just my thoughts lol.
i could go on and on about this, so before i write a novel of my own, i'll stop here lol. but first....DYANN...to answer some of your questions....the box office..."PSILY" is at number 5, as of friday...not bad at all :D gerry's actual singing isn't on the soundtrack (i preordered it a while ago), but the song he sang while playing the guitar on the couch--holly and gerry's song "love you 'til the end"--is on it.
GypsyDy - December 24, 2007 03:22 AM (GMT)
Bummer about Gerry's singing still----Mischa--hint hint, you KNOW were I'm going right? She says as she plays her 300 soundtrack---hint hint! You LOVE Gyspy right????
Okay well I think the Irish thing---well I think they shoulda kept it to Irish cause they threw out so much else of the book---I didn't say that before cause Starshine was so wrapped up in it, and we're already at odds over the guy on MOONLIGHT *LOL* , so I just let it go! But I think it was right to keep it Irish.
Yeah they changed a LOT---most of it I liked tho, I think it kept he story tighter---I WAS dissapointed at the Travel Agency---I thought maybe it WAS a longer scene and ended up on the cutting room floor cause of total movie time or something. I think that shoulda been left in.
I really was expecting a Jerry hospital looking half dead scene---but I was relieved it wasn't there----I used up most of my kleenex anyway so woulda drenched the carpet if that had been in!
Yep when I saw the Bar I went MISCHA'S BEEN THERE!!!! I didn't forget for sure!
The only thing that REALLY irritated me was knowing she had the bumbula on her head cause of Gery's wardrobe misfunction filming and they went on this whole "pimple on her head-squeezes to hard" thing to explain why see had a bumbula on her head! I mean it was REALLY distracting cause I knew they were tredding water here explaining her bumbula for the story.
Geeze, all they had to do was say "What's that on your head?, and she says "I fell over something", and one of them go "Well the way this apartment looks falling over something is understandable" move on, problem solved! They'd have saved enought time to leave in a longer scene at the travel agency.
I wasn't as nuts about the book as you girls, to me it was good but I just not something to carry around reading over and over again! I wasn't as committed it staying the same. I think part of it might have been it was written for younger ladies and I'm not younger---some of it like her PRINCESS IN THE CLUB, lets get drunk etc---wasn't the way I live.
I love the movie, but it HURTS me too---I mean from my Dad dieing to my cat I've had to grieve. My best friend from High school died of cancer, and a friends boyfriend had a brain tumor. I'd just like to get a cut of Gerry's scenes to watch over and over and not have to go through the rest!
If I could have just seen Gerry's scenes I'd have gone back today!
It STARTED with his funeral---so I guess in away there was no real need to go over his illness----the story was only 2 hours, and the story was about her survival and her going ON.
I think they did a good job---only showing Gerry in the happy times, and yet showing how much she missed him---by only showing the good it made it sadder in a way. If you've ever seen anyone dieing of cancer---well sometimes you feel a bit relieved when they finely "go over" and then you feel GUILTY because you felt that way. This way we only had the happy times! So it was even more sad!
DID ANYONE THINK OF OUR DEAR JENNY???
I HOPE SHE GOT TO SEE IT, AS I KNOW SHE WOULD LOVE GERRY'S PARTS, BUT I HOPE SHE WAS OKAY WITH THE REST OF THE MOVIE!!!!
JENNY IS SUCH A HEROINE TO ME!!!! I LOVE THAT LADY LOTS!!!

yea yea, i'm on it...*LOL*
i meant to mention this before...the part with the bandaid on holly's head. i didn't get as worked up about it as you, dyann..i actually thought it was funny that they tried covering up the incident by doing that. and that gerry ended up getting smacked in the head with the suspenders instead.
starshine - December 24, 2007 05:05 AM (GMT)
I've only seen this movie once...don't shoot me...but I was looking for evidence of Hilary being hurt but didn't see anything. I remember that comment, but didn't think anything about it.
I want to see it again before I go back to work from my three-day vacation. :0) Mischa reminded me of that scene where Holly wakes up and Gerry is sitting on the couch singing and playing the guitar and she kisses his cheek, and neck, Mischa tells me, because I've only seen it once, so I can't remember EVERYTHING, like some people. hint hint. *lmao* But I think that was my favorite thing. I cried too when Gerry was the only one in the room to listen to her sing and when she cried to her mom.
Good news though, my copy of Shattered is on it's way to me in the next few days. *custard*
monique - December 24, 2007 05:55 AM (GMT)
Nice long comments and review you guys have! I knew at least two of you on the board, like Mischa and Gypsy will spill the beans out this way. It's very good to listen or read your comments. I'm impressed....
But yeah, I was looking forward to seeing a scene of Gerry being sick, but Dyann made a good point though. It's good not to see Gerry in that scene because we might cry more. The movie is already long. I was wiping my tears most of the time. I just couldn't bear Gerry being dead when he didn't want to die yet.
He wants to have a long life with Holly and his children that it broke my heart again when Holly found out that her sister? is expecting a baby. I cried again wishing that she got pregnant before Gerry died just so she can hang on to something that's a part of Gerry instead of hanging on to that box of Gerry's ashes.
I actually forgot the part when Gerry was playing the guitar on the couch and singing a song, but I couldn't forget the part when he was alone in the bar listening and savoring the song Holly is singing to him. That part I really cried.
I'm going to see it again after Christmas. I've been very busy delivering gifts and preparing for the holiday parties.
bye bye for now!
ps--i love you *LOL* hehehe
GypsyDy - December 24, 2007 08:52 PM (GMT)
I was pretty much crying anytime Gerry was on the screen unless I was laughing--sometimes I was laughing AND crying at the same time!
Yep that guitar scene--- :wah: and alone while Holly sang in the bar :wah:
Well just in general............................:wah:
My copy of SHATTERED should be on the way too---got lucky on ebay and got it for only $8.99---no one else bid---guess they were busy with Christmas!
I mean brand new and still sealed---wahoo!!!!! Sometimes I get a break, not often tho!!!
MISCHA--- *hug*

I really enjoyed this movie. While watching this movie I was wondering how much was acting or him being somewhat of himself. After seeing the movie I had a chance to watch HBO First Look at P.S. I. Love You. One woman said Gerry was playing Gerry. Hilary said Gerry liked to make people laugh. There was a few times I had tears.
He is a good singer. I know he was in a band. In the HBO show he commited about learning how to play the guitar.
This one will be added to the collection.

Ok, Mischa has told me she's seen PSILY at LEAST three times, well that I know of. I, on the other hand, have only seen it the once, and I have to say, my friend bought me my ticket as part of my Christmas present (she also bought me the final season of the Gilmore Girls but I digress) to which I said, 'Awe, you're buying me Gerry for Christmas.' I wish that could be true, oh well. lol My point is, I'd like to see it but I'm working ALL THE TIME. I know it will calm down next week. I even have to work tomorrow, yes, New Year's Day, so unlike about 1.3million+ other people in Las Vegas, I won't be able to stay up and party like it's 2008. Not that I was planning to do anything anyway, but the option to would have been nice. When 'the season' ends, then I'll be able to see it again. I can't wait! lol *gimme* *lmao*
monique - January 1, 2008 06:06 AM (GMT)
same here starshine. I've been working all the time and if not, I'm spending time with my daughter. After the holidays I will be able to see PSILY again and will be able to relax a little bit. *sw*
mischa8 - January 1, 2008 07:02 AM (GMT)
you're almost sounding like i have nothing better to do lol. remember, i work 2 jobs, so i RARELY have time to myself. and when i do, i'm usually relaxing at home. but i decided to fill my "spare time" with as much gerry as i can. even if that means catching the last showing of the movie on a friday night, i'll do it. and besides gerry being in it, i really enjoy this movie. i'd probably go see it again even if he wasn't in it. but that's neither here nor there lol.
starshine - January 9, 2008 03:17 AM (GMT)
I finally saw PSILY again this afternoon! I was the only one in the theater. lol Which, seems strange, but really it was kind of nice at the same time. At the very beginning, after he comes back in, he says something, and I started to cry, and then of course, whenever there was mention of him or him on the screen I couldn't stop thinking about it, so I kept crying. It was much better the second time around. I got the soundtrack in the mail, and last night as I went to bed, I turned it on. I really like the first song, of course, but the rest are a tad strange. lol

Something else. All I remember is that it was something Gerry said that made me cry. I always seem to be crying because of him. lol

i kind of understand what you mean. it used to sound strange to me too. when i first got it, it was before the movie came out, so i was pretty lost in terms of how they fit into the movie. after i saw it, i got it right away. so, i like it better now that i've seen the movie a few times. my favorite is actually "kisses and cake"--i guess you would call it the theme music to the movie.
GypsyDy - January 13, 2008 01:36 AM (GMT)
I finely got a chance to go back and see PS I LOVE YOU AGAIN TODAY--my second time. I didn't cry as much this time (but I still cried!) :wah:
So when I wasn't crying I could concentrate and enjoy the movie more---I REALLY love this movie!!!! Even tho it is sad.
I love it mostly because of the happy parts with Gerry---and knowing that he wasn't totally playing someone else---that a LOT of him was up there for us to enjoy!
I did hear sniffing around me in the theater so knew the first timers were crying the way I did the first time around! Everyone was saying good things about it after the film was over as they were leaving.
The odd part was that the happy parts with Gerry were often the ones that made me tear up---go figure--still trying to figure that part out! Maybe because it was just her memories and he was now GONE. Or maybe because I was feeling blue because even tho she only had that kind of a love for a short time at least she had it-----
-------and I never have! :wah:
Also when the credits were playing I thought about our Jenny and wondered if she had gotten to see it. Her daughter said something about trying to download a copy but as it's still in the theaters......well I just thought that was incrediably sad because she would have loved it soooo much..... :wah:

I saw it last night for the 5th time! I hooked up with the same friends when Phantom of the Opera was here. It gets better and better everytime..did any of you notice that Jeffrey Dean (William, Jerry's bestfriend) was on the stage when Holly was singing? He was way in the left corner and sat down. Well, I hope I'm right. :um:
One more thing. You're all gonna be very, very proud of me-----I finally convinced my whole family to see. "PS I Love You" and guess what??? All 13 of us went last night inlcuding Tabitha. When the movie was over. They all needed visine. Everybody cried..well..the women only of course. They couldn't get over it. I'm so happy... *hp* *iSOrock*
