I'm just doing some cramming for tomorrow morning's ancient history exam and have been looking at art and some "trends" in art. You would notice that Greeks tend to show many naked figures, particularly heroes and they also excercised naked.... Here's a quote.

"It was the Spartans... who were the first to play games naked, to take off their clothes openly, and to rub themselves with olive oil after exercise"
-Thucydides

Also my lecturer talked about how this Greeks didn't find only beauty in the harmonious proportions of nature and in bodies but also virtue.

hm.... *shirt*

I'll let you all come to your own conclusions. And you ought to get 300 pics on these list of avatars. Come on!

Anyway, back to the studying...

Well.. they didn't fight naked. They did wear armour. They just worked out naked. Then all the other Greeks copied that. And they all started getting into working out and competing naked. But they did wear armour. Greek heroes didn't like being naked, they were just portrayed naked in art to use their physical perfection as symbol of their virtue. In the Odyssey you find that Odysseus is swept onto an island naked and some young girls, including the princess of the Island find him but he quickly gets a branch to cover himself.

Greeks wore much more than leather panties in a fight, after all they had skilled blacksmiths. I mean... come on!

And historically speaking there were 300 Spartans at the battle of Thermopylae but there were also about 6800 other soldiers for other parts of Greece. And Thermopylae was a pretty useless battle.

Sorry. Ancient History student here. I can't help it. I like the movie anyway but never take it as historical fact. Never take Hollywood movies as fact. Ever. EVER!!!
