Icon Prods. has sold stateside distribution rights to the R-rated crime thriller "Butterfly on a Wheel" to Lionsgate Releasing.

Directed by Mike Barker ("A Good Woman"), "Wheel" stars Pierce Brosnan as a mysterious stranger who arrives in Chicago and terrorizes a happy-seeming married couple (Maria Bello, Gerard Butler) after kidnapping their daughter. Soon it becomes clear that his outrageous demands are not in pursuit of a big cash payment.

The film's title comes from Alexander Pope's "An Epistle to Dr Arbuthnot": "Who breaks a butterfly upon a wheel?"

Written by William Morrissey, "Wheel" was filmed in Vancouver and Chicago. It was produced by Brosnan, Morrissey and William Vince. Executive producers are Icon's Bruce Davey, Marina Grasic, Beau St. Clair and Dave Valleau. It is an Infinity Features/Irish Dreamtime U.K./Canadian co-production.

Icon Entertainment International is handling worldwide sales; Japan and Italy are the only territories still available.

Gerard Butler and Pierce Brosnan Star in "Butterfly on a Wheel"
After the world premiere of Butterfly on a Wheel at the 2007 Berlin Film Festival, Icon Productions and Lionsgate Releasing made a deal for Lionsgate to distribute the dramatic thriller starring Pierce Brosnan, Gerard Butler and Maria Bello.

Commenting on the film during an interview with About for his Western movie, Seraphim Falls, Brosnan said, "This film coming out, Butterfly, is a picture that we made - Irish DreamTime. It was a challenge. It takes place in a day. I’ve seen it and I’m happy with it, as happy as one can be."

Butterfly on a Wheel was written by William Morrissey and directed by Mike Baker (A Good Woman). Brosnan, Morrissey and William Vince produced the film. Lionsgate hasn't announced a release date in the U.S.

Butterfly on a Wheel - Official Synopsis

Neil (Butler) and Abby Warner (Bello) have the perfect life and a perfect marriage. With their beautiful young daughter, Sophie, they are living the American dream...until today.

When Sophie is suddenly kidnapped, they have no choice but to comply with the abductors demands. The kidnapper - Ryan (Brosnan), a cold and calculating sociopath takes over their lives with the brutal efficiency of someone who has nothing to lose.

In the blink of an eye Neil and Abby's safe and secure existence is turned upside down. Over the next twenty four hours they are at the mercy of a man who wants only one thing. That they do his bidding. It soon becomes clear that Ryan's demands are all the more terrifying because he doesn't want their money. What he wants is for Neil and Abby's life, the life that they have built over 10 years, to be systematically dismantled and destroyed. Piece by piece.
