Flipping around the tube this morning and stumbled upon "Eddie & The Cruisers II". My first thought was; "they made a sequel to THAT?". Which got me thinking of weird sequels to random movies.
The original "Eddie" was okay, but it never screamed for a sequel and --- more importantly-- it didn't seem popular enough to spawn one.
So to be included in my "They Made a Sequel to THAT?" list, I settled on some loose criteria.
1-- Movie is fairly obscure. It other words, it ain't as popular as something like "Jaws" or "Ghostbusters"
2-- The original never demanded a sequel.
3-- Both movies were not box office draws.
4-- This is probably the most important: when you found about the sequel, you were surprised that it existed.
Keep in mind that this list is NOT to designate bad sequels or loose connections. So that eliminates stuff like "The Jerk Too" or "Rocky V".
My starter list that should get you thinking "They Made a Sequel to THAT?!"
-Eddie & the Cruisers II
See above. While the original movie didn't light the world on fire, its radio single "On the Darkside" was fairly popular. It sounded a little bit like a Bruce Springsteen tune and your local independent TV station probably used it to make a commercial for their "Tales from the Darkside" syndication package. The original movie ended somewhat ambiguosly and a weak sequel did nothing but show off bad 80's fashions and tried to create another "On the Darkside".

It's like making a sequel to "Monty Python and the Holy Grail". The joke was funny once, but a sequel wasn't required. The parody of the original, combined with a campy 70's atmosphere made it seem like you were watching someone's home movie. Making it an 80's b-movie was actually an upgrade, production-wise.
-Hell Comes to Frog Town II
Most famous for starring Roddy Piper and the leggy chick from "Conan"the original was incredibly bizarre and you felt like icky, afterwards. But a sequel? So weird and obscure that even Piper wasn't involved. Considering the number of shitty movies Piper's done, that's saying something.
Sure, I'm only starting out with THREE, but I'll be adding more as I think about it, this week.
Use your discretion when adding to this list. Sure, there are A LOT of shitty horror movies that spawned sequels, even entire franchises. Might want to skip over those (i.e: all the Troma crap). But something like : "Jack Frost 2" might qualify.
Also, please add a sentence or two of description to your addition.
