Title: Scott Steiner's Headgear
Description: Just curious

Jillie - April 25, 2008 11:31 PM (GMT)
My boyfriend and I were just talking about how retarded Scott Steiner is (I sent him that link that's in someone's sig here where he and Christian are botching the head slam thing), and we were wondering why in the name of all that is good and holy does he wear the chainmail headgear?

Mad Dog - April 26, 2008 12:11 AM (GMT)
He's been doing it for awhile. As far back as when he was WCW World Champion. I don't think there's any reason other than it looks cool. I've never really seen a problem with it. Just something different.

Same here.

I kinda like it, actually.

SamoaRowe - April 26, 2008 04:20 AM (GMT)
Yeah, it does look pretty cool.

I wish I had more to say on the matter, but oh well.

The Fuj - April 26, 2008 06:34 AM (GMT)
It was way better when he had the all police siren entrance music and Midajah as his one freak.

That was cool.

Erick Von Erich - April 26, 2008 07:44 AM (GMT)
I think I had a clearer understanding of it, back in 2000. (Yes, I was one of the 12 people who still followed WCW at the time) I don't believe he ever cut a promo or anything to explain it, but the gist I got was that he was presenting himself as a king or a knight. Sort of a regal twist on the typical "stud" mentality.

I equated it with the movie "Excalibur", where a lot of characters had the same headress. Arthur, Gawainn and company were all pretty much badasses in that flick. I could see one of them sitting in a tavern, drinking ale, ripping off the arms of any contenders, and partaking in the pleasures of wenches. So it works either way: "stud" or "bad ass".

BTW, remember for a few weeks in Spring 2000 when he would come to the ring in ski goggles? He got Nash to do it, too. I think that was some weird hip-hop thing that I never understood.

KSSassy - April 26, 2008 11:38 AM (GMT)
Even Little Petey Pump looks good in the headgear.

The ski googles... lol...

I did that wayyyy before 2000, but I remember Steiner doing it around spring break out. The thing to do was put some money in the goggle like so

then wear it like so.

Haha. Of COURSE Fuj would know that.

Anyway, you guys really think the headgear looks good!? I think it looks completely ridiculous and wholly out of place. I thought maybe if i there was some gimmick thing that explained it it would make me feel better, but apparantly not.

The Fuj - April 26, 2008 04:58 PM (GMT)
I'm from the hood.

That's what we did. I know there is a picture of me in like 97 doign the same thing in cleveland.

Erick Von Erich - April 26, 2008 07:47 PM (GMT)
Nice! Thanks for the lil' history on the ski goggles. Next time it snows around here (which should be tomorrow), I'm putting a one dollar bill in my goggles and walking to the grocery store like that.

Steiner's hood, while distinctive, should've had a shelf-life of about 1 year. When he popped up in WWF in 2002 or so, I thought it was a little weak that he was still wearing it. Same thing when I saw him in TNA five years later. Sure, Hulk Hogan has his trademark do-rag and Flair has his trademark robes... but I don't think you'd want your trademark look to be the chainmail hood.

I came across a photo the other day of Scott Steiner with long dark hair. I can't remember him at all with that look

Well you have to take in effect that its been 10 years since he went blonde.

The night after Superbrawl 8 is when he debuted the blonde hair.

I remember seeing Steiner with that look for the first time while watching WCW at my aunt's house and thinking "Holy shit, he looks like a star now." In other words, to a junior high kid like me, the change worked.

whitemilesdavis - April 27, 2008 10:56 PM (GMT)
Oh it definitely worked. Before the change, Scott was basically known as Rick's more talented brother, but he had no character. The look pretty much solidified him as a mian-eventer.

Oh no...

He debuted the look in Feb 98, but it took him until like Nov of 00 to be looked at as a main eventer, when he won the title, 9 years too late i might add.

whitemilesdavis - April 28, 2008 11:46 AM (GMT)
I disagree on both counts. I remember the night he came out on Nitro. The crowd, announcers, everyone treated him differently. That's no to say he broke throught the "glass ceiling" at WCW immediately, but he was certainly in place to do so. Second, it wouldn't have made sense for Scott to win the title before 98. Good worker? Sure. Anything else? Not really. He was basically a silent tag-partner for Rick. That's it.

dynamite kido - April 28, 2008 01:22 PM (GMT)
I think it's safe to say that if Scott would have had this gimmick in his 1992 state, there's a good chance he might have been the most badass heel of all time.

I'm guessing that's why I can't remember him with the longer dark hair. The look he has now is "it" and it goes well with his character.

Matching Steiner up with Petey made for a nice little storyline but I'm wondering why TNA hasn't matched him up with someone more his size. If what I have read is accurate, Rick Steiner isn't looking to return to TNA -- he's busy in his hometown with other things -- and he is doing a few Indy events here and there. And the Rhaka Khan thing just isn't doing anything for me.

As you can tell, I am a Steiner fan right down to his mic work. I've always considered him to be a powerhouse kind of wrestler and he does make a decent heel. He may be past his prime in some areas but I think with the proper matches and storyline he has a lot of life left in pro wrestling.

Jillie - April 28, 2008 06:45 PM (GMT)
Ug. I HATE Steiner. I usually mute the TV when he promos because I can't understand what he's saying anyway. He just comes off to me like a big idiot. His in-ring skills are alright, as long as he doesn't talk. I think my dislike of Steiner originated with that feud he had with Test over Stacy in the WWE (I don't really remember anything of Steiner until that feud), and that feud really f'ing bothered me (the whole submissive woman thing...she should have just kicked both of them in the nads and been done with it...but anyway...).

Anyway, the point of that rant is that I can't take anything Steiner does seriously for some reason, right down to the head gear and the ridiculous Excalibur tattoo. I think of him as a big goof...someone that has a job because of the way he looks but doesn't really know what he's doing or how he got there. Maybe that's his character, maybe it's my bias, but that's the way I see it.

The problem with Scotty is that they brought him in as an "enforcer" for Jarrett, then for Christian.

He's fine in that role, I suppose. But without a better heel character to leverage his heat and charisma off of, Steiner's just a loudmouth redneck with big muscles. He doesn't have a "character" to speak of, because TNA hasn't really helped give him one, yet. So, if he seems a little lackadasical its because he doesn't really know where he's supposed to be coming from.

whitemilesdavis - April 28, 2008 11:58 PM (GMT)
First off, Steiner in WWE was pure crap. Not entirely his fault, but needless to say, that didn't work out. I thought he had really rejuvinated himself in TNA. His feud with Joe was all kinds of fun.

Scott steiner was 10 shades of awesome in 91.

dynamite kido - April 29, 2008 01:30 PM (GMT)
Ditto like a motherfucker for the last two posts.

KSSassy - April 29, 2008 02:16 PM (GMT)
Here I go disagreeing with everyone again.

Scott Steiner is a big muscular (no kidding) guy. As a heel he would be good -- I'm not saying great, but good -- if given the opportunity. I'm betting he could switch over to the good guys team in a short period of time, too.

Unfortunately, these wrestlers can only work with what they are given. And TNA likes to bring in wrestlers and keep them at what they were before, or less. Steiner was an educated wrestler and I'm certain that if he were given the chance, he could show the TNA fans that side. The little "match" between Steiner and AJ Styles gave everyone a little insight into how he could work but that match was basically treated as a joke.

I enjoy Steiner forgetting everyone's name and what he did to poor Crystal was funny. Maybe he truly does forget names and this was TNA's way of making it not a big deal.

jackmcmanus21 - April 29, 2008 02:28 PM (GMT)
Scott Steiner was awesome in WCW...one of the most over guys. He can only be a heel though I think...no way this guy can be a face, he messes up too much.

And if you are a female wrestling fan, that's a big soft spot. The poor huge muscluar guy who messes up. I'm sure it doesn't work for the male wrestling fans, but girls tend to melt.

dynamite kido - April 29, 2008 02:36 PM (GMT)
Steiner is just completely over the hill now. He's been too injured, been on too many steriods, and is just on the downside of his career.

Although I saw some rejuvination when he came back to feud with Joe. That was one of the first times that I remember there being a "big match feel" in TNA.

Ha. Speak for yourself, chicky. :P What makes ME melt as a female wrestling fan is a guy that can...oh, I don't know...wrestle.

Anyway, someone should link me up to a good Steiner match from circa '91. I'd be interested to see what the guy could do with some direction and in his more-prime-than-he-is-now years.

I have only seen a few matches from Japan. Isn't it true that the Japanese book wrestlers to wrestle versus what we see on our television sets? If what I have read is correct, in Japan and Mexico there is actually respect for wrestlers versus here where it is more of a joke.

And Scott Steiner could actually wrestle once. He just hasn't been given the opportunity in a long long time.

Scott Steiner will never be, say Handsome Harley Race, Michael P.S. Hayes or the one and only Nature Boy Ric Flair, but he's still got "the look".

There was a wrestling shirt or something that I saw years ago that got it right.

In Japan wrestling is a sport.

In Mexico wrestling is a lifestyle.

In America wrestling is a joke.

I've seen that saying, with the inclusion of "In Canada, wrestling is tradition."

Great Headgear-Wearers in Wrestling History:
(although each may merit his own thread for discussion)

--Bugsy McGraw and his flight helmet

--Rick Steiner and his wrestling helmet

--Moose Cholak and his moosehead

--Mean Gene and his combover

--Nikolai Volkoff and his Russian Woolie hat

--Cowboy James Storm and his umm...battered cowboy hat

--Jeff Jarrett and his purple cowboy hat with two Big Ass J's (and lights)

--Farooq and his Nation of Domination Jim Brown hat

--Mr. Fuji and his Bowler

--Trevor Murdoch and his trucker's cap

--Steven Regal the Real Man's Man and his construction helmet

--Paul Heyman and his backwards baseball hat with ponytail (but only when a babyface)

--Hillbilly Jim and his floppy brown cap

--That Filthy Pig Skinner and his weathered straw hat

--I really should have an awesome pay-off joke down here, but I can't think of one.

whitemilesdavis - April 30, 2008 12:08 PM (GMT)
Nice post E. I can already see all the DWB-ers searching the dark corners of their minds for obscure hat-wearers you didn't include...like Konan and that black hat with the brim flipped up that he used to wear with NWO.

Yeah DK, I got that comp from you. Incredible stuff.

Big F'N Swigg - April 30, 2008 12:14 PM (GMT)
You forgot Vader and that giant elephant thing he used to wear

Jillie - April 30, 2008 06:53 PM (GMT)
Does Golddust's wig count?

BTW, all of those head piece choices make sense to me. Steiner's Lancelot rip-off does not.

Anyway....

Thanks for those clips. I have yet to watch them for lack of time, but I will!
