Title: Google Maps' Street View

Erick Von Erich - March 20, 2008 04:57 PM (GMT)
Stumbled onto this today, while dialing up some directions. Not sure how long it's been around, but Google Maps has an interactive "Street View" that allows you to do 360 rotations and navigate around a map, visually. You're not visually seeing map elements.. you're visually seeing pictures of the actual street. It's pretty damn accurate.

Right now, it doesn't include every street in every city, but a good portion of most major cities have it enabled. Here's a screen cap of the "Street View" of my office. I added a red arrow to my window, so you can see where I park my ass, most days.

It's a good time waster. I clicked-through my drive to work, starting from about 2 miles from my front door.

I imagine it'll be a bitch for Google to keep it updated, though. Having to constantly update/refresh images as road are rebuilt, buildings torn down, etc. For instance, their overhead satellite images used to lag behind by about 5 years.

Still, check this out and I'm sure you'll be amused. If you can, post pics of your local school, office, work, makeout place...whatever!

That's the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester, NH. Most of the places I did a search for aren't on the site yet, so I had to settle for this. I've been to this place for numerous wrestling shows and a few concerts. It's a very nice arena.

That's Southern New Hampshire University, my college. This is the building where most of my classes were held.

That's Weston School, in Manchester, NH. I did about two months of student teaching in special education there.

Egads! Google's been working on this, as now the suburban sidestreets have "Street Views"

Look! It's the eVe/ES Complex!

Just down the hill from us, the open space park where the pooch and I go for our walks (the Canal is behind that bank of trees):

Judging by the grass and weed growth in both pics, plus the skies in #2, I'd say Google took these sometime in late summer/early fall. So they have pictures of where you live..... they're watching you!

Well, WrestleVessel now knows where you live.

Well, suck. The Google maps for my area are at least 5 years old, maybe more

Give it a few months, they'll catch up. Their satellite view was first taken around 2000-2001, but it was updated, recently. I'm sure street view will eventually get there. It actually seems more useful than the satellite view. Satellite was mostly "oh cool..look!". But Street view is great for travellers. It helped me find my hotel when I was in Phoenix.

WrestleVessel has my old address from our ill-fated tape trade. So the poor bloke who lives in my old place probably gets annoying mail. Like: "Dear Mr. _______, why won't you trade with me anymore because I really want to see that match you own that has Brutus Beefcake do a run-in on Earthquake's match from 1991 with his mask on that was never seen again and supposed to be called the Avenger. my brother ships all of my tapes and broke that first one he sent to you. also, tell me who won with Cernel Mustafa and the British Bulldog"

Here's a weird building that I pass everyday, on the way to work. It was built in the late 80's and is jokingly referred to as "Gotham City Hall" or "the Batman Building". It's actually a building for Denver Water and houses either sewage, piping, or offices, depending on who you want to believe.

You could definitely picture Batman standing on the top, overlooking "his city".

It sits all alone in a bank of warehouse and looks incredibly out-of-place. It even has a little bridge that crosses to.....nothing. The end of the bridge butts-up to the Interstate. Those little rickets on the bridge are supposed to be a conceptual art rendering of ducks. On rare occassions they spout water.

Your tax dollars at work!

I'm going on vacation next week. I'm heading up to the same campground that I've been going to for the past 20something years. I found some nice images of the lakes around the campground on Google Earth.

This is the coolest little movie theater in the world. This is from Bethel, Maine. Tickets during the day are only $4 and it's about 15 minutes away from the camp grounds.

Another shot of Bethel, Maine. That's the grocery store we end up using while we're in town.

A bunch of shots from Concord, NH (the city I currently live in).

And one shot from Hooksett, NH. I would drive past this building every day on my way to school.
