The All-Time Nintendo Entertainment System Tournament
Brought to you by JamieGeist
Winners Don't Do Drugs

That's right, I'm back with a new project. You can call it boredom if you wanna be a dick, but I call it motivation. An online community that I frequent recently began discussions about the top Nintendo Entertainment System Game ever. I was intrigued, as a huge fan of the original NES, and helped contribute to their overall rankings. After their rankings were set and released, things fell apart, and the tournament (which was way too contrived) was castrated and forgotten about. Well not anymore babee!! Anyway, I stole their rankings, and slapped them into a MASSIVE ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY-EIGHT GAME TOURNAMENT to determine the top NES game of all time. The brackets are divided into 4 brackets, and will eventually result in the Top NES Game Ever. The first bracket to be unleashed: The Soda Popinski Memorial Bracket.

If you're viewing this anywhere other than TCE, than I invite you to come over there and check out the graphics that accompany the posting. In this thread here you'll only find the bracket, but I've got full box art/descriptions on TCE. You'll have to register if you aren't already a member. It might take a bit to load if you're still on your 1985 Connection:

http://cageeffect.w4l-gfx.com/forums/index...t=ST&f=5&t=6676

This thread should be used to discuss the games, get behind your favorite games, campaign, sling mud, whatever you want to do. But mainly, have fun, reminisce, and remember the great times you had with your NES and your favorite games. Please take a moment to PM me your first round results for this bracket. I would appreciate greatly having a diverse set of results to proceed with. Thanks again.

Anyone else who wants to vote, get them in, as I'll probably post the next bracket today.

Scrooge McSuck - November 30, 2007 06:26 PM (GMT)
If anything beats Mike Tyson's Punch-Out, I'm sending DK to your houses to eat your brains... unless DK votes against it. Now, if it were Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream, that's another story.

Wait... Bases Loaded 3 gets a nod, but not Bases Loaded?! IS BOOS!

SamoaRowe - November 30, 2007 09:18 PM (GMT)
Scrooge, you need to take your mind off of such a stressful topic. Perhaps you can think back to who just won the World Series and which team they crushed on their way to doing that.

And I sent my list in :).

The Rockies? The Indians? The Angels?

Oh, and please don't pine for my votes. I played maybe 4 of these games, so I'm no help.

jamiegeist - December 1, 2007 04:49 PM (GMT)

dynamite kido - December 1, 2007 06:50 PM (GMT)
I'd be willing to bet that either a Mario Bros or Mega Man win for that bracket!

jamiegeist - December 1, 2007 09:23 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I'm shocked at how many Mega Man games got voted in, because I really can't differentiate in my mind other than 2 and 3. I didn't even really know there were more, and I'm pretty sure I've never played em.

Mad Dog - December 3, 2007 02:04 AM (GMT)
Whoever decided Who Framed Roger Rabbit was a good idea needs to be smacked upside the head.

And Punch-Out is a great game but Tecmo Super Bowl was frankly a superior game. To this day it still stands as one of the best football games ever made.

Just a reminder: Would love to have votes for Bracket 2 from both Swigg and Scrooge (since they sent in picks for Bracket 1) as well as many votes for Bracket 3 and going forward.

prof_plague - December 7, 2007 08:20 AM (GMT)
Sent.

And where the hell is Bubble Bobble and Tetris?

jamiegeist - December 7, 2007 06:47 PM (GMT)
One more bracket to go. I have a sneaking suspicious they'll sneak in.

And thanks for the votes from Plauge and Rowe. Swigg, you wanna hit bracket 2 and 3?

And I was mistaken -- Scrooge hasn't voted at all. I just kind of expected him to.

Big F'N Swigg - December 7, 2007 07:07 PM (GMT)
I'm studying for my finals. Is it ok if I send it in tomorrow after my final?

jamiegeist - December 7, 2007 07:33 PM (GMT)
Yup, all first round votes are fine until after Bracket 4 goes up (later today) and then a bit of a open period to allow everyone to get those votesin.

jamiegeist - December 8, 2007 09:38 PM (GMT)

Darryl The Hitman - December 8, 2007 09:53 PM (GMT)
Can I send in votes for all 4 brackets or is it too late to vote on anything but the last bracket?

jamiegeist - December 8, 2007 10:43 PM (GMT)
Send em in for all 4 brackets. It isn't too late until the next round begins.

Darryl The Hitman - December 9, 2007 03:05 AM (GMT)
I wonder how Galaga and Shinobi didn't make the list but other than that, I can't think of any other notable omissions.

I have a video game section on my board--would you care to join up there and post your tourney so people there could vote as well?

Either that or I could post a link to this thread over there and ask them to join up here so they could PM you their votes here?

Darryl The Hitman - December 9, 2007 05:52 AM (GMT)
I realize it's impossible to fit every game in but I recall another game that I found really fun: Spy Vs. Spy. :)

jamiegeist - December 11, 2007 05:31 AM (GMT)
Swigg, DK, interested in further contributions before I move onto round 2?

Winners Don't Do Drugs

Soda Popinski Memorial Bracket - Round 2 Matchups(17 Total Votes)

1. [b]Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!
(17-0, John Elway)
16. Track & Field (13-4, Baseball Stars)

9. Tecmo Super Bowl (14-3, Jordan v Bird)
8. World Championship Wrestling (15-2, Tag Team Wrestling)

5. Excitebike (13-4, American Gladiators)
12. RC Pro-Am (8-7, Skate or Die)

20. Tecmo NBA Basketball (10-7, Roadblasters)
4. WWF Wrestlemania Challenge (16-1, Dusty Diamond Softball)

3. RBI Baseball (14-3, California Games)
14. Marble Madness (10-7, Tecmo World Wrestling)

11. Blades of Steel (11-6, Bases Loaded 3)
6. Duck Hunt (16-1, Double Dare)

7. Tecmo Bowl (15-2, Bad News Baseball)
23. Double Dribble (13-4, Gold Medal Challenge)

18. Super Dodgeball (11-6, Super Spike V'Ball)
2. Pro Wrestling (16-1, Baseball Sim 1.000)

The "Sports Bracket" continues into round two with some very intriguing matchups. Mike Tyson's punchout opened with a sweep, and now moves on to perhaps another steamroll over Track & Field. Tecmo Super Bowl, a bigtime sleeper at a 9 seed, has to handle WCW wrestling for a bigtime showdown with Punch-Out, but will it happen. 2 classic racers showdown next, with the winner moving on to face either a hardwood classic, or one of the first great games featuring the squared circle. Marble Madness, a questionable title in the sports genre, pulled off an upset over Tecmo World Wrestling, and now has its eyes set on RBI Baseball. Duck Hunt mowed down Double Dare, but the gloves come off as it goes head to head with the 11 seed, Blades of Steel. Another basketball title meets up with the original Tecmo Bowl, and Super Dodgeball will try to slow down Pro Wrestling to finish out the bracket.

Don't forget to send in all votes via PM.

Ludwig Von Koopa Memorial Bracket - Round 2 Matchups(16 Total Votes)

1. Super Mario Bros. 3 (16-0, Yo! Noid)
16. Batman (15-1, Fester's Quest)

9. Mega Man (15-1, NARC)
8. DuckTales (14-2, Balloon Fight)

5. Mega Man 2 (14-2, Caveman Games)
12. Mega Man 4 (12-4, Snake Rattle N'Roll)

20. Ninja Gaiden 3: The Ancient Ship of Doom (11-5, Strider)
4. Mega Man 3 (11-5, Spy Hunter)

3. Super Mario Bros. 2 (11-5, Micro Machines)
14. Mega Man 5 (14-2, Kid Niki)

22. Donkey Kong (10-6, Adventure Island 2)
6. Kirby's Adventure (16-0, Thrilla's Surfari)

7. Ninja Gaiden (14-2, Bionic Commando)
23. Donkey Kong Classics (8-8 TIE, Chip N'Dale)
10. Chip N'Dale: Rescue Rangers (8-8 TIE, DK Classics)

15. Rygar (11-5, Battle of Olympus)
2. Super Mario Bros. (16-0, Roger Rabbit)

The bracket many have dubbed the "Mario/Mega Man Overkill" bracket moves into round 2 with ALL of the Mario and Mega Man titles surviving. Which will be the first to go down? Mario 3 opened with the sweep, and moves on to Batman, which has quite a following with only 1 vote going against it in the first round. Mega Man & DuckTales both rolled over their 1st round opponent, and have a huge 8/9 showdown here in the 2nd. Mega Man EXPLOSION as 2 squared off with 4, and cover your eyes if you're a faint of heart Mega Man fan, as the winner could likely take on Mega Man 3, which faces off with a surging 20 seed in Ninja Gaiden 3. Super Mario 2 fended off the upset special v Micro Machines, and creates our first Mario v Mega matchup, taking on Mega Man 5. Donkey Kong pulls an upset over Adventure Island, and takes on Kirby, which pretty much got a bye over the retarded Thrilla's Surfari. Our first tie of the tourney forces the first ever Video Game 3-Way Dance, as Ninja Gaiden rolled Bionic Commando to face on the 2 games that had to kiss their sister: DK Classics, and Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers. Can Ninja Gaiden hold off the extra support that the tie may cause? Our bracket closes out with another Mario game fresh off of a sweep, the original Super Mario Bros, as it takes on Rygar. Sorry Rygar, its been fun.

Dodongo Memorial Bracket - Round 2 Matchups(14 Total Votes)

1. The Legend of Zelda (13-1, Golgo 13)
17. Dragon Warrior 3 (7-7 TIE, Star Tropics)
16. Star Tropics (7-7 TIE, Dragon Warrior 3)

9. Dragon Warrior (11-3, Amagon)
8. Kid Icarus (11-3, Metal Gear 2)

28. Wizards & Warriors (8-6, Zelda 2)
12. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (13-1, Dragon Warrior 2)

20. A Boy & His Blog (8-6, Crystalis)
4. Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse (13-1, Kiwi Kraze)

3. TMNT 2: The Arcade Games (14-0, Blaster Master)
14. Final Fantasy 2 (10-4, Goonies 2)

11. Gauntlet (13-1, Wizards & Warriors 2)
6. Final Fantasy (11-3, Shadowgate)

7. Castlevania II: Simon's Quest (12-2, Nightshade)
23. TMNT3: The Manhattan Project (14-0, Little Nemo)

15. Metal Gear (13-1, Robin Hood)
2. Castlevania (12-2, Wrath of the Black Manta)

The Zelda bracket opens up with a rough matchup, as Zelda walks into a RPG 2-headed monster. Dragon Warrior 3 and Star Tropics couldn't settle it in round 1, and now both advance to take on Zelda in a 3-Way Dance. Can Zelda survive this early test? Another Dragon Warrior advances on and takes on Kid Icarus in a quiet round 2 matchup. Wizards & Warriors DID IT! Zelda 2 goes down with a thud, but now W&W walks into a buzzsaw in the form of the original TMNT game. A Boy & His Blob takes care of Crystalis to meet up with Castlevania III, which surprisingly did NOT sweep Kiwi Kraze (?). TMNT 2 predictably swept Blaster Master, and goes head to head with Final Fantasy 2. Can the RPG nerds take down the world's most fearsome fighting teens? Gauntlet meets Final Fantasy, and I have a feeling someone will be using some magic in that one. Our 2nd Castlevania advancer, Simon's Quest, meets up with TMNT3: Manhattan Project in a HUGE round 2 matchup, and does it for the right to likely face the 2 seed in the original Castlevania, which draws Metal Gear. Will it be Castlevania v Castlevania, or can the heroes in a half shell make some more noise?

Kraid Memorial Bracket - Round 2 Matchups(11 Total Votes)

1. Metroid (10-1, Bubble Bobble 2)
16. Arkanoid (8-3, Jackal)

9. Paperboy (7-4, Hogan's Alley)
8. Battletoads (7-4, Double Dragon 2)

5. Double Dragon (9-2, Bomberman)
12. Maniac Mansion (6-5, Jaws)

20. Rampage (7-4, Bubble Bobble)
4. River City Ransom (10-1, Gyromite)

3. Tetris (10-1, North & South)
14. Burgertime (6-5, Super C)

11. Guardian Legend (7-4, Life Force)
6. Dr. Mario (7-4, Gradius)

7. Kung Fu (6-5, Pacman)
23. Battletoads & Double Dragon (7-4, Pinbot)

15. Tetris 2 (11-0, Gyruss)
2. Contra (11-0, Deja Vu)

Our last bracket recieved the fewest amount of votes, and may be the wildcard bracket, as many of the results were tight 1st round matchups. Metroid moves on easily and faces one of many arcade classics in this bracket in Arkanoid. Paperboy and Battletoads have a sweet round 2 matchups, fresh off of the heels of Battletoads getting rid of it's friends in Double Dragon 2. The original Double Dragon survives, and meets up with cult favorite Maniac Mansion, which narrowly snuck by Jaws. Rampage pulls an upset over the classic Bubble Bobble, and meets up with another cult favorite in River City Ransom. Tetris solve its first round puzzle, but meets up with a way underrated sleeper in Burgertime. Can the Soviet survive? Guardian Legend moves on to try and get rid of the only Mario game dwindling around this bracket, in Dr. Mario. Battletoads & Double Dragon use their ultimate teaming powers to face off with Kung Fu, which took down the arcade classic of Pac-Man. In our last matchup, 2 games coming off of 11-0 sweeps in the first round will meet up for the right to advance. Tetris 2 faces Contra. Somebody better put the Konami code in, cause Contra might need it.

prof_plague - December 12, 2007 12:35 AM (GMT)
Man, I missed the last bracket!

And Skate or Die almost made the tie with RC Pro-Am.

jamiegeist - December 13, 2007 08:51 AM (GMT)
Anyone on DWB want to contribute? Still accepting votes.

Big F'N Swigg - December 13, 2007 07:52 PM (GMT)
Give me a bit. I didn't even see the 3rd & 4th brackets.
