Title: The Food Thread
Real F'n Show - July 11, 2006 10:09 PM (GMT)
Fuck, I just had one of these Subway Tuscan Subs, and if I wasn't so full I'd want another. Too bad Subway's so damn expensive, or I'd have found a new favorite lunch. Instead I stick with the 99 cent Rodeo Burger from Burger King, although someone at work today told me Wendy's now has 99 cent chicken sandwiches. Awesome.
S.T. Strickler - July 11, 2006 10:35 PM (GMT)
At Subway, I usually go for the Chicken Teryaki (most of the time on Hearty Italian Bread, and always a 12" sub) with shredded cheese, lettuce, and the sweet onion sauce.
dynamite kido - July 11, 2006 11:01 PM (GMT)
Subway has two things I get on a regular. The Buffalo Chicken or the Chicken/Bacon/Ranch. But I might have to try that new Tuscan. My only problem with going to Subway is that there are now like 1200348487 Quizno's around me and they totally own the way of subs.
D.A.V.E. - July 11, 2006 11:18 PM (GMT)
Sorry, plain ol' steak and cheese for me

Around here, we got about 3 Subways, 1 Quizzno's (in the mall), I think a Blimpie, and a bunch of Sheetz.
jamiegeist - July 12, 2006 12:00 AM (GMT)
Subway is everywhere here (Wichita, KS), and it is damn near impossible to find a Mr. Goodcents.
Goodcents rules. Subway is good, but jewish and way too fuckin expensive, and Quiznos is great, but is somehow even MORE expensive.
I like the Spicy Italian. Have thought about the tuscan chicken, but just what the fuck is it exactly? Spicy or something?
Real F'n Show - July 12, 2006 03:16 AM (GMT)
Like chicken and peppers and sauce and stuff. Not really sure myself, but damn tasty.
eStragand - July 12, 2006 04:16 AM (GMT)
Subway's gimmick sandwiches are okay...like the Tuscan chicken and the Steak Bistro. But you gauge a sandwich chain by evaluating their plain ol' cold cut sammiches. Subway's cold cuts are awful, since their veggies are shipped frozen, then thawed out. For instance, their tomatoes are really, reallllly runny and soft. Their "toaster" is just a microwave on low power.
Subways used to be one of the cheapest places around. You could get a 6 inch combo for 2.99-3.49, which included chips and drink. I only went there when I was low on cash. As late as 2002 that was the case. But, with the rising popularity of Quizno's and other higher scale deli and lunch joints, Subway thought they could raise their prices. Most people haven't noticed, but now I'm paying 4.59 for that same shitty 2.99 combo. In the 90's they were competing with McDonald's, BK and Arby's. Now they think they're comparable to Baja Fresh, Quizno's, Chipotle, Noodles, Your Local Deli and the other "made to order" lunch places.
Even though they cook their own bread (with thawed out shipped ingredients), it tastes and feels like a garden glove. You can toss some of their stuff in the microwave and make it taste tolerable, but Subway's cold sandwiches are still the worst around.
Blimpie's cold cuts are awesome, though.
Mad Dog - July 12, 2006 04:20 AM (GMT)
I can't take Subway anymore. There are just better places to spend my money at like Jersey Mike's.
dynamite kido - July 12, 2006 01:03 PM (GMT)
Dude, Jersey Mike's is awesome.....but even more expensive than fucking Quizno's.
I definately agree about Subway raising their prices. They used to be cheap when they didn't have 500 different kinds of bread, or 900 sandwich varieties. They definately raised their prices with the introduction of all the other Sandwich places out there.
whitemilesdavis - July 12, 2006 02:01 PM (GMT)
Life on the road has meant I have had to tolerate fast food for about the past decade...and it pretty much all sucks.
At Subway, I can eat the Southwest Cheesesteak, but es is right, the cold sandwiches are horrible. I prefer Steak and Hoagie for a hot sub too. A little pricy, but I'll pay for quality any day.
As far as straight fast food, if I have to eat it, I try to find an A&W or Sonic. Mostly I eat at Chili's, Ruby Tuesday, Gator's and similar places.
dynamite kido - July 12, 2006 02:18 PM (GMT)
A&W is the shit.
And I wish they'd bring a fucking sonic where I live......fuckin fuckers.
whitemilesdavis - July 12, 2006 02:29 PM (GMT)
A&W isn't half bad. The only ones here are connected to another joint (KFC, Long John Silver's, etc) So I wonder what one would be like on it's own.

I don't know if they even have them on their own. It's the same way where I live.
Connected to another place or not, I will NOT stop going anywhere that has chili cheese fries.
Mad Dog - July 12, 2006 03:07 PM (GMT)
I lived down the street from a Sonic when I was going to college. Now the closest one is 50 miles away. :(

The Chili-Cheese Fries are unreal, huh?
OK, that seals what I'm doing for lunch.
dynamite kido - July 12, 2006 03:15 PM (GMT)
Hells yeah. Do yourself a favor and go there.
So, what the hell kind of stuff do they have at Sonic?
I figured the normal shit, obviously. They look like they have the best drink selection ever as well.
whitemilesdavis - July 12, 2006 03:24 PM (GMT)
They have a lot of quirky little things. Chili Cheese Tater Tots aren't half bad. The drinks and deserts are a definite plus. Honestly though, it's mostly just that the burgers taste better on a more consistant basis.

Did you just say Chili Cheese Tater tots?
I honestly don't think that a better food item on the planet exists.
Real F'n Show - July 12, 2006 03:56 PM (GMT)
They fucking melt in your mouth. I've ate at a Sonic like 4 times in my life, because the closest one is all the way across the state, but fuck if those weren't my top 4 fast food meals of all time.
eStragand - July 12, 2006 04:13 PM (GMT)
There's a non-traditional Sonic here in downtown Denver. They don't have the parking lot thing, so it's a walk-in restuarant like a Burger King.
Worst. Sonic. Ever.
I stopped in when it first opened back in January and could not finish my meal. That bad.
Since 1997, I've eaten out every weekday I've been at work. I take lunch and my weekly lunch budget VERY seriously. I used to get through with 20 bucks a week. Now, I'm lucky if I keep it under 20 with my four-day work week. You have to institue some rules to survive it. For instance, you can NOT eat burgers on back-to-back days, or eat at the same place twice in one week. I usually work in about 5 miles of walking over the lunch hour, per week.
There are NO burger places withing walking distance of downtown Denver. Two McDonald's, but you don't think of those as "mmm!! Burgers!". There's a Burger King and a Wendy's on the edge of downtown, but they're about a two mile/20 minute drive. 4 bucks for a Whopper with lettuce, onions and tomatoes, with fries and a drink is still a pretty good lunch deal.
Most of the places down here cater to the trendy "fresh express" crowd. Starbucks, TONS of shitty deli's, rice bowls, etc. The rice bowl joints are good, but you can't get out of there without dropping 8 bucks. Tokyo Joe's is great, but it's 5.50 for a bowl...plus 85 cents for veggies. Drinks start at 1.19.
Spicy Pickle's another yummy joint, but they don't have prices on their menus...that's a warning sign. A single 6 inch sandwich (with no drink or chips) has run me 8-9 bucks, there.
Do you guys have Wahoo's Fish Tacos? For about 6 bucks you can get two GOOD tacos and free drink refills. Steak, chicken, fish or shrimp tacos. I also LOVE Panda Express, but it's a pretty big lunch meal and runs at least 7 bucks. Chic-Fil-A's another highlight of my weekly lunch runs.
Oh yeah, I tried an Arby's Roast Beef Gyro awhile back. Didn't sound too appetizing, but it was actually pretty damn good.
dynamite kido - July 12, 2006 04:23 PM (GMT)
Dude, E got that shit down to a science.
and damn do I want chili cheese tater tots.
whitemilesdavis - July 12, 2006 04:30 PM (GMT)
As I type, I'm scarfing down some chili-chees fires, a double bacon cheeseburger and a root beer, and I've got to say...it's hitting the freaking spot. Good call DK. Unfortunately, you now got me aching for the chili-cheese tots, so I may have to have a little late afternoon snack.
I haven't mentioned my new addiction which is Moe's. I don't know how much of the country these places are in, but there are a few around here. It's sort of a bulid your own burrito kind of thing. You'll spend about $7, but that's a great value for the quality of food you get.
Mad Dog - July 12, 2006 04:37 PM (GMT)
Wendy's is my go to spot usually. Burger King is a back up. KFC used to be but I have to scout the places out first. Some places go overboard on the spices and it gives me issues.
whitemilesdavis - July 12, 2006 04:49 PM (GMT)
I've got a Wendy's 100 yards from me. It really sucks. I don't know what happened. It used to be the best fast food place around, but the past 6 months or so it has been unbearable.
eStragand - July 12, 2006 04:52 PM (GMT)
The KFC sandwiches are pretty good. They have that honey BBQ chicken sandwich for cheap. I can't eat their regular chicken in the middle of the day, though. For dinner, no problems-- just always get the "original recipe", skip that extra crispy crap or you'll need new arteries within a week.
Quizno's has a value menu, with their roast beef, steakhouse dip and a few others. About 5.50 for a sandwich, drink and chips.
There's some controversy about Quizno's. In 2001, they were the beneficiaries of a "9/11 Financial Relief", despite the fact that they're based out of Denver and had no viable connection to the WTC attacks.
But they consistently put a "cup man" mascot out on their sidewalks, which reminds me of "Milkshake Man" from Reno 911!
Oh hey, who digs Carl's Jr?! Their Western Bacon BBQ Burger destroys. Their fries are weak, but the burger makes up for it.

For the record, that value menu sucks ass. There's no way I could ever go to Quizno's and not get the best sandwich ever. Mark my words, if you try this sandwich the way I order it and don't like it (seriously) I'll pay for the motherfucker.
Chicken Carbonara on rosemary parmesian bread, without mushrooms.
OWNAGE.
jamiegeist - July 12, 2006 06:50 PM (GMT)
Yeah, the Chicken Carbonara is the shiznit. I think we need to start a top 20 fast food listing, seeing as how we are all apparantly specialists in the field.
I just had Subway, and went with the new Bourbon Chicekn. It was good, but didn't really look like the picture. Still, I was happy.
When I lived in my hometown of Hays (College Town, about 20,000 people) I had the weekly specials down to a science where I could eat as cheap (or as much as I wanted for a normal price) every day:
Monday: Burger King -- 99 cent Chicken Sandwiches. Like, the REAL chicken sandwiches on the hoagie. 2 of these, with cheese, no mayo. Mmmmm yeah. 2 bucks and I'm out.
Tuesday: Subway -- A bit of a splurge day, by the schedule. 3.99 footlong of my choice (with exceptions of course, jews). I usually had the Spicy Italian on white. Lettuce, Tomato, Onion, Green Pepper, and Salt & Pepper. I remember when footlong day was like 2.99. Fuckers.
Wednesday: Kentucky Fried Chicken. -- 1.99 Chicken Fried Steak Meal. This still exists here, and may in your area as well. Even if you're really fuckin hungry, just get two, and it is still only 4 bucks. Awesome.
Thursday: Mr. Goodcents -- 3.99 for a full Chicken Alfredo (or Marinara) Pasta with drink. I like Goodcents' subs more than their pasta, but a 4 dollar pasta and drink that fills you up is the shiznit as well.
Friday: Never did find a good daily special for Friday, and I need my Wendy's fix at least once a week, so we'll splurge here. Usually I go with the Spicy Chicken, with cheese, and no mayo. If I'm feeling hungry, I'll add a Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger as well. Like 8 bucks, but oh well.
Saturday: Pizza Hut Buffet. Again, never found a real good one on the weekend, but my wife used to work at Pizza Hut. She got free Buffett, and I had to pay with a 20% discount. So we got out for like 4 bucks. Which is awesome.
Sunday: Burger King -- 99 cent Double Cheeseburger. We come full circle. What I like to call my NFL Sunday Ticket Meal. Nothing beats watching 13 NFL games, and scarfing down (at least) 2 Double Cheeseburger. In my latter stages, I would get them plain with BBQ sauce, and then order a small onion ring. POOF! Instant double rodeo burger, 2 of them, for about 3.50.
Alternate Sunday: This works best if you have a companion on Sundays. Just discovered this one: Subway -- two footlongs (no restrictions) for 8.99. You can't beat that shit. I guess it is there way of giving back to the little people. Honestly, I couldn't touch two footlongs, and I can eat my fuckin food, so you're gonna need a friend (or a fridge) for this one.
eStragand - July 12, 2006 07:17 PM (GMT)
Allright....Jamie's got the hang of it.
There are no Mr. Goodcents out here. What type of stuff do they serve? I always enjoy travelling around and checking out the various chains. Like Whataburger, Miami Subs, White Castle, Checkers and Steak n' Shake. So now I need to hit the midwest again and check out Mr. Goodcents!
Dinner's a bit different. That's always my biggest meal of the day and I eat homemade about 90% of the time. But when I want something for a quick takeout, I'll hit:
-Chipotle (big ass California style burritos)
-Blackjack Pizza (local chain. Rod Smith does their ads)
-Papa Johns Pizza (might be local)
-Blimpie
-Fazoli's
-Wing Stop (used to have an AWESOME one at my old place. Not one within 15 miles of my home, now)
-Brother's BBQ (I'm not sure if this is local or a franchise)
-Tons of local mom n' pop restuarants. There's Winston Hill's BBQ - run by a former New York Jets All-Pro, but his sandwiches are awful. Ribs only.
-On rare occassions, I'll go to Panera Bread. Faggoty salad joint. Chics dig it, though.
jamiegeist - July 12, 2006 07:29 PM (GMT)
Goodcents is literally "subs & pastas" as their little tagline states.
They have some great hot subs. Had a buffalo chicken sub for a while, and they have a really good Philly. Their Chicken Bacon Ranch OWNS Subways.
Chipotle is something I only got into once I moved to Wichita, as I'd never been around one before. Love that place.
Papa Johns is National to the best of my knowledge. They're all over the place here, even though I don't like it. I find if I want pizza, I prefer a local joint around the corner, or make a frozen Tony's Pizza.
We have a place here called Two Brother's BBQ, which might be the place you're referring to. Hard to say.
Best Ribs I've had in my life was about 3 months ago in Kansas City. Jackstack BBQ. A local place, with 3 locations in KC. Just unbelievably wonderful. Great sides (beans, corn bake, cornbread, etc.) and the Babybacks were unreal.
I love Carl's Jr, and their bastard stepchild (Hardees - still great, but not quite as awesome), but there isn't one anywhere here in Wichita. Saw a Carl's in Denver, and should've had it, but couldn't convince the other people in the car. They wanted BK -- lame.
Whataburger holds a special place in my heart. When I went to Houston with my friends for Mania 17, there was a Whataburger directly in front of our hotel (about 2 blocks from the Astrodome). We went there every single night (and day too, I think). Nothing beats an awesome burger at 3 in the morning. Every town should have a Whataburger. I get so pissed when I watch Big 12 games, and they're always a sponsor, because I know how far they are away. Oh, and they had little dippable ketchup things. That is just awesome for some reason.

Good call on that one. My friends and I used to hit that for lunch every Friday. Decent price for all you can eat.

I've been to Chipotle's only one time, and that was back in October in DC. And I tell you what, I absolutely enjoyed it. Unlike my brother, I didn't get one of them big ass burritos, instead I went for the burrito bowl. Still good nonetheless. Now if only they could bring one to Winchester.
dynamite kido - July 12, 2006 08:17 PM (GMT)
I think the E will back me up on this as well as maybe MD because they've either been to Pittsburgh and I think E used to actually live here.
Primanti Bros sandwiches MOTHERFUCKER.
The shizznizzle.

You must have went to the original one in the Strip District. Over the last few years they have opened numerous places all over the city. I live about 20 mintues from the city and there's one 5 mintues from my house.
eStragand - July 12, 2006 09:45 PM (GMT)
I don't remember Primanti's.. just see 'em on the typical NFL outro spots. Only lived in Pittsburgh until I was four, but kept going back until all my relatives were planted in late 1989.
I've been back 3 times in the last 6 years or so, and I need to hit one of those joints. Last time I was through, had the Old Man with me...and he wanted to hit the Denny's out by the IKEA on the way to airport. Lame.
Hey..I've been to the ORIGINAL Chipotle, down on Evans and Downing by DU. Those things are like weeds or Starbucks, though. Pretty soon they'll be all over your town. I think McDonald's might have picked them up, or invested in them, in the past two years. Just don't go in there expecting your typical Mexican restuarant burrito. They have their own "California" taste.
Remembered Steak Escape at lunch, today. Those places are pretty good.
Real F'n Show - July 12, 2006 11:24 PM (GMT)
Anyone else love the KFC Bowls as much as me? If I'm not getting a couple snackers that's usually what I'll pick up there.
Also, I love BK's Rodeo Burger. Like a cheeseburger, but instead of ketchup, mustard, or pickles, it has onion rings and barbeque sauce on it. And it's only 99 cents.
But today, I ate at Wendy's for lunch. Two chicken sandwiches and a bowl of chili for 3 bucks. Fuck yeah.
S.T. Strickler - July 13, 2006 01:39 AM (GMT)
Burger King is always good, but I really hated the Angus Steak Burger, or whatever it was.. Tasted horrible. Back then, I'd usually go for the double cheeseburger/Big King. Then I started going for, and currently still do, the Chicken Whopper, or whatever it's called. Also liked the Spicy Tendergrill, but they never put on the spicy sauce, other than when I first had it.
jamiegeist - July 13, 2006 02:23 AM (GMT)
I love the Chicken Whopper as well, especially when I'm drunk.
I happen to adore the Angus Burger, especially the Cheesey Bacon variety and Cheddar Bacon Ranch variety.

BK's by me not only don't have Rodeo burgers, but they don't even have a .99 menu.
