whitemilesdavis - December 20, 2004 04:10 AM (GMT)

I like Stavesacre, but they were miserable when I saw them live.
But it was two years ago, and that's probably why.
The Last Free Voice - December 22, 2004 08:47 PM (GMT)
Granted, we all know I suck at music, and I'm a wierdo, so keep that in mind. Here they are
AFI
The Misfits
The Clash
The Ramones
GNR

Strange, they probably had an off night. I've seen them 5 or 6 times and they've always been really good.

Is there something I'm missing with AFI? Their singer sounds like more of a whiner than Fred Durst, and their cover of NIN's Head Like a Hole is horrendous. I also can't stand that song you recommended for my CD.
The Last Free Voice - December 22, 2004 11:45 PM (GMT)
What? You don't like Malleus? Wow. You won't like their music then. I don't quite know how to describe why I like them. I will admit I hate thier cover of HLAH, but it's a totally different style of song thanw hat they usually do. I just like the whole imagery thing, and the whole dark, kinda creepy tint they have.

The more I think of it, the more it was just a bad concert in general. It was Stavesacre, Living Sacrifice and Project 86 in Indiana. There were TONS of red hat wearing Limp Bizkit lovers who were around 14. They all thought it would be "cool" to start a mosh pit by waving side to side. For an old-school hardcore mosher like myself, it was hell. I'm used to mosh-circles and pits that have lots of open air. I got very claustrophobic and ended up watching the show while standing on a chair.

I saw the same frigging tour. Project 86 bit donkey-nuts. LS was OK but a little too strait metal for my tastes. Plus they were SO loud the music was kinda hard to make out. Satvesacre was great that night, but they played like a six song set. I left disappointed. Pretty violent pit at the show I was at, but I usually would only jump in if I wasn't interested in the music. Spent a lot of time there that night.
Big F'N Swigg - December 23, 2004 03:56 PM (GMT)
I went to see LS & P86, and Stavesacre was an added bonus. The pit started during the LS set, so I missed some of it out of need to calm down. Project was good the night I saw, but I've seen them since and they weren't so good.
whitemilesdavis - December 23, 2004 10:53 PM (GMT)
It may have been a different tour. I saw it in Greensboro, NC, and I remember the tour poster having Stavesacre on it. Project 86 was a band that I only gave one shot, and they just weren't good at all that night. On a related note, what do you think of Pillar?
Big F'N Swigg - December 24, 2004 01:34 AM (GMT)
Project has been up and down the past few years. What basically happened is that Atlantic (who picked up their distribution)O wanted them to go one way, while the band wanted to go the other way. The band appreciated the money, but couldn't deal with the stress. The music became secondary to the image, etc. and the band nearly called it quits until they got out of their deal and funded the new CD "Songs to Burn Your Bridges By" on their own and did it on their own terms. This reminded them of why they made music to start with, and they made up with T&N and now T&N is distributing the CD. It's on my list of CD's to buy soon. But then again, so are about a thousand. I highly recommend their first CD, but it's a bit darker than most "Christian Rock" fans are used to, and want.
As for Pillar, I'm so-so. My roommate got me a free copy of their CD before it was re-released, and I wasn't impressed. I have to admit, though, that I do fall into the "Anti-Pillar" bias.

I own their first CD, but have never listened to it. Maybe I'll go check it out, though I wouldn't call them Christian rock.

Was it the "Fireproof" CD? That's the only one I've ehard and I thought it was pretty good in a pop-metal kind of way. They just popped in my mind cause I saw them at the same club, and they were very good live.

Why is that? I really know nothing about them.
Big F'N Swigg - December 25, 2004 03:16 AM (GMT)
I wouldn't quite call Project "Christian Rock" either, but they are on a label that's considered Christian, and they are Christians. Something about the lyrics and the rhythm does it for me. I have an odd connection with the vocalist.
The typical anti-pillar bias is best shown in the following story: One of the writers for HM, the Christian rock magazine, let his nephew listen to the CD. His nephew listened well, and finally asked "Hey, this isn't too bad. Who is it?" His uncle told him it was Pillar, which got the response of "I can't believe you made me listen to this crap" while the nephew ejected the CD and threw it on the floor.
I think they're like 311. People who like them love them, and those who don't hate them. And yes, it was Fireproof.
TehDoct0r - December 25, 2004 07:33 PM (GMT)
Metallica
Led Zeppelin
DreamTheater
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Tool/A Perfect Circle
Followed closely by Pink Floyd and Guns N Roses.
Benoit is God - December 26, 2004 01:30 AM (GMT)
Metallica
Megadeth
Iron Maiden
The Ramones
Black Sabbath
PedigreeMC - December 30, 2004 10:03 PM (GMT)
1. Lynyrd Skynyrd
2. Rolling Stones
3. Eagles
4. Led Zeppelin
5. Van Halen
I would put down Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble but it was mostly SRV and not the band as a whole. If we get into favorite Artists though, SRV is big as it gets for me.
SamoaRowe - December 31, 2004 04:44 AM (GMT)
1) Ben Folds
2) Tool
3) Pearl Jam
4) Incubus
5) Rufus Wainright

This makes up for the Kenny Chesney post.

hehe yeah, I knew being the big country music fan that I am that I was in trouble when the Music topic said discuss anything except country.
Big F'N Swigg - January 1, 2005 08:15 PM (GMT)
That wasn't my doing, but RFS'. I actually don't mind Pre-Garth country. Everything since then has been imitating him or Alan Jackson, IMO.
Real F'n Show - January 1, 2005 10:30 PM (GMT)
Yeah, go ahead and discuss country if you like, it's just a joke. I'm not a fan, that's all.

Hehe yeah funny my two very favorite country artists are Alan Jackson and George Strait. I hear alot of folks echo what you are saying with that but Ive been getting back into alot of country recently because there just does not seem to be anything else modern that I can listen to. If it aint Classic Rock and Roll or Blues (which I can listen to by CD only since no radio station seems to play enough of that) its country for me.
Darryl The Hitman - December 8, 2007 09:09 PM (GMT)
The Beatles
Aerosmith
Metallica
Nirvana
Foo Fighters
Black Sabbath
Soundgarden
(I couldn't narrow it down to 5, sorry)
As for country, I like Johnny Cash but wouldn't go out of my way to listen to anyone else.

5) Pearl Jam

It's fun to revisit your old way of thinking when it's in writing, isn't it? :)
The Last Free Voice - December 9, 2007 06:37 PM (GMT)
I guess it's good to see how far I've come, but that list is cringe-worthy. I mean, I still like all those bands, but... it just seems so "Angry Sixteen Year Old". You know?
This is a really hard subject for me, though, because my faveorite bands/songs/albums are all really dependant on my mood at the time I'm being asked.
Darryl The Hitman - December 9, 2007 07:23 PM (GMT)
From the date of original posting, I'll guess you're now "more mature 19-year-old"?
The Last Free Voice - December 9, 2007 11:45 PM (GMT)
I'm 19, at least. My music tastes have broadened quite a bit. Dunno about "matured".

Real F'n Show - December 11, 2007 12:26 AM (GMT)
Eh, my tastes have changed a lot in just 3 years too. Just something that happens. I don't hate what I used to like now...I just like other stuff MUCH better.
Big F'N Swigg - December 11, 2007 02:07 AM (GMT)
I've actually calmed down a lot. My top five at the moment are as follows:
