Title: Season 1, Watch With Lisa (alias Virgin)
Description: What am I letting myself in for :P
Persephone - August 13, 2004 10:23 AM (GMT)
Pilot Episode
You know how I said, I was never destined to watch Alias, the first disc has a scratch on it. It's only for about 15 seconds, but still
I've never seen Alias before, so bear with me, I'll probably make loads of mistakes, and not know any of the character names
Okay, first off, we meet Sydney. How old is she supposed to be, i can't work that out, should she be about 24, and if so, why is still in college?
This is going to get complicated, methinks. Awwwwhh for the marriage proposal, even though the singing was awful. LOL at the chat between Sydney's dad and her fiance. I'm not sure why, Sydney decided to tell him, what she did, I'm guessing the whole getting married/no secrets kind of deal. Maybe she should have warned him, not to talk about it on the phone, secret agent, bound to be bugged. :fear:
I'll mention this now, I'm impressed with the way Syd being an Agent/backstory was approached. It becomes part of the story. As she tells her fiance what she does, we find out how she was recruited, and no need for an awful talky bit at the beginning, a la Buffy (first season)
And then they murder him :o
First twist, her Dad was there, when the kill was ordered.
Second twist, Sydney does the job, and finds out she's working for the enemy
Third twist, she has secret talks with the real CIA
Fourth twist, Her dad is not only an Agent, but a double agent
And I'm sensing a lot of bad history between Syd and her dad, and that was before she found out, what he is.
Wow, twisty all over the place, but I liked it, so yay

Welcome to the seedy world of espionage, counter espionage, counter-counter espionage, and oh yes slinky outfits ;)
willowroolz - August 13, 2004 10:28 AM (GMT)
Bad news about the scratch, Lisa :(
It's a great first episode. One of the things I love most about Alias is the speed it moves at. The pace of that episode - better get used to it cos most of them move even faster! :o
Syd's ability to lead a normal life whilst also having this big secret is a large part of the character's (and the show's) dilemma ;)
Persephone - August 13, 2004 10:29 AM (GMT)
mmmmh, somehow i don't think the slinky numbers, will do anything for me Paul ;)

I dont think this really counts as a spoiler- so Syd is in grad School, and she's in her mid twenties, grad school is like the years after the first few years at uni I think

I love the passion in this episode. She gets so angry and determined. Love the red wig. ;)

mmmmh, to early to tell I think. The weird thing is, I've never liked men with short hair, but after Ben Browder, I'm beginning to look past that. He has nice eyes. (they both do)
Unless you meant, what did i think of the character, nah, surely not, that's definitly too early to comment on :ph43r:
Boo hiss, he has a partner though, poor old Syd

Think eveil thoughts towards her. It makes you happy. Honest. :whistling:

Grad school in America is where they do degrees that almost reach the levels of first degrees in the UK :) (I failed so can say that without snobbery)
As I've said before about Alias the thing to ask is what comes first - the design of the outfit or the plot that requires her to wear it :)
Its good but I don't think its as good as is made out - I really only stuck with the 2nd series because of an addtional attraction. I still don't have the enthusisam to watch S3 yet.

And yay that you've finally got to see some Alias!
Syd is 27 in S1, iirc.

At least they scrapped that for most of S2.

I'm with Neil on this one. The other half loves it, so unsurprisingly I've seen a fair amount of it, but it's not particularly a show I'd go out of my way for I must admit. She went spare when I sold my S1 boxset, and I had to get a new copy from Amazon
I enjoyed the pilot episode, but I found the rest of the first season quite difficult to get into.
Margot C - August 13, 2004 10:04 PM (GMT)
I love Alias. I think it's the characters. While a show like 24 is plot driven, Alias is driven by the characters and their emotions. That's why I can't wait for Alias S4, but will not be watching any more 24, and won't miss it either.

24's another one. Moe will probably disown me for saying this, but I really don't see the fascination. It was ok for the first season, but after that I've just struggled with the show. Just seems too mundane to me. :fear:

I haven't forgotten this thread. I've had to send the boxset back to amazon though, disc 2 had a scratch too :(
Will resume, once the replacement comes

Oh, thats bad luck. :(
Still, hopefully you won't have to wait too long for a brand new set. Did you watch all episodes on the 1st disc, or did you stop after the pilot?
Margot C - August 23, 2004 08:41 PM (GMT)
One of my S4 Buffy discs has a scratch. I tested it out when I got it and it seemed to work fine, but unfortuantely I didn't get round to watching any episodes for ages after they came. Two of the eps freeze up in the middle and I have to skip to the next scene. Luckily both times happen in a fight scene which I don't mind missing, but it's annoying that I can't do anything about it.

It might be worth contacting Fox customer services to see if they will provide a replacememt disc.

Yeah, I might. I probably won't bother, though

I'm starting to worry now - one of my B5 season 3 discs that I haven't watched yet is scratched. I didn't realise dvd players were so sensitive to these things. Are they really bad scratches on your discs?
goth willow fan - August 23, 2004 10:37 PM (GMT)
Depends how wide/deep the scratch is - minor scratches shouldn't effect playback.
Persephone - August 23, 2004 10:39 PM (GMT)
It didn't look so bad, but once I played the disc, it completely froze on a scene. It was the older DVD player that I used though. (yep Alias, another programme I have to watch on the bedroom TV  )
willowroolz - August 23, 2004 10:42 PM (GMT)
I did have a case with one of the s4 Farscape eps (Coup By Clam) where it just froze at or around the layer change. Tried it on the downstairs dvd player and it was fine. I guess different players have different tolerances.
Margot C - August 24, 2004 02:35 PM (GMT)
The scratch on my Buffy disc is quite bad, so yours might not be affected if the scratch is only little.

Has it been this long since I tried watching Alias first time :o
There's no point in me even trying to review eps. I kinda realised, it's probably best to watch a few eps together since they all tend to blend into each other.
Anyway, I'm just over half way through season 1, Syd has just found out that her Mom was KGB :o (and I quite like Syd's Dad, is that wrong? Not that way Steve :P )
Just to let you folks know, that I've liked what I've seen so far, and bought season 2 from Amazon for £20 :toomuchtv:

Season 2 is even better Lisa
