Title: Favourite Theme Music/title Sequence
willowroolz - August 9, 2004 09:46 PM (GMT)
So you sit down to watch a show or a film, and every time you watch it you feel the need to crank the theme music up. Are there any particular ones that do it for you?
For me, for tv shows, my favourite title sequence has to be NYPD Blue. For theme music it's a bit more difficult cos there are loads, but I'm sure others will pick the more obvious ones, so I'm going to go with Remy Zero's Save Me from Smallville. That gets turned up really loud every time - I love the dramatic way it kicks in. Oh, and at the moment it's the Stargate SG-1 theme. Played very loud.
For movies, for a combination of title sequence and music, Superman The Movie. But just for the music, Star Wars A New Hope

From a series POV, Jeremiah opening credits/music from Season 2.
On the movie front, I love James Horner's score for Apollo 13, but for a credits/music combo it would have to be the opening to Star Trek Generations.

I like Angel's theme tune, Buffy's is fine but it really doesn't suit episodes like The Gift or Becoming where it ends sadly with a great song/score and then the Nerf Herder theme kicks in and kind of ruins the mood.
Smallville's theme and The West Wing's themes are good too, very fitting to the shows.

Firstly for Sci-fi/Cult shows, I'd have to say:
Star Trek: Voyager (one of the few good things about it!)
Stargate SG-1
Doctor Who
Blake's 7
Babylon 5
Buffy
Angel
Non-Sci-Fi
King of the Hill
Law and Order
Six Feet Under
Thunderbirds
CSI
And I'm sure there are lots more.... :D
Persephone - August 9, 2004 10:31 PM (GMT)
Culty stuff, I love the Angel theme tune, and the Firefly tune, has really grown on me, to the point, I can't get it out of my head. Buffy is okay, I prefer the reworked version used in later seasons. The opening credits/music used for Six Feet Under are stunning. I'm not a fan of Dido, but I love the song used for the Roswell credits.
For films, Se7en is a particular fav (opening sequence, bet you can't guess the band ;)
Pulp Fiction
There's certain films I watch purely for the soundtrack, The Crow (Dead Souls) Natural Born killers, The Doors movie, Requiem For A Dream and obviously the scenes in the Scream films, when they use Red Right Hand.

From B5 - the Sleeping in Light suite.
Another culty (kind of) one I'd forgotten; Hill Street Blues, and, Band of Brothers.

Tv Shows theme music wise I love
STAR TREK THE NEXT GENERATION
DR WHO
RANDALL AND HOPKIRK (New version)
MIDSUMMER MURDERS
JOHNATHAN CREEK
and yes I even like STAR TREK ENTERPRISE.
Film wise I think the one that puts a sense of excitement into you has got to be the SUPERMAN theme. However for a title sequence I think (as Angel has already said) that STAR TREK GENERATIONS is just wonderful!!!

I like the Angel theme, but I tend to forward through the Buffy one when I watch videos/DVDs. It's not that I don't like it - more that I'm sick of it. I love the SFU theme, I don't think I'll ever get sick of that.
I also think the CSI music is cool, cause it's so happy for a show dealing with death. It makes me laugh :)

I think my current favourite theme is Dead Like Me, helped by the funny intro sequence that accompanies it.
LoobiLou - August 10, 2004 11:43 AM (GMT)
The Angel and Millennium themes never get old, they suit every single episode perfectly - sum it up really well. For movies, Mad World from Donnie Darko and a few songs from The Crow
willowroolz - August 10, 2004 12:18 PM (GMT)
I'm going to put in a word for:
Mission: Impossible
Hawaii Five-O
Farscape Season 3 & 4
Voyager
:D

I think mine's a given, LOL
I also love the Roswell theme, actually prompted me to buy the Dido cd
Currently loving The O.C. theme tune as well since it's been released and I keep catching snippets of it wafting into my office from the radio in the factory.

My favourite tv theme tune by far is the Angel one. Buffy's is ok, but not as good, I tend to always skip through it. I love the Desperate Housewives opening credits. and Futurama. The Simpsons opening credits are brill, but after seeing it about 500 times, it gets a bit old. I'm not too sure about the music in the Alias opening credits.
Film wise, I adore the opening music of Cruel Intentions (Placebo - every you every me)
Steve - February 23, 2005 08:07 PM (GMT)
Dr Who theme from the Troughton/Baker days-bliss
Airwolf (please dont laugh!)
Voyager
Donnie Darko soundtrack
Starwars
Kill Bill
Persephone - February 23, 2005 08:12 PM (GMT)
I'm not a fan of the Alias theme tune either
Must mention Carnivale, I love the opening sequence through the tarot cards to the KKK, again stunning, like the other HBO show SFU ;)
Love that Placebo song too. I don't really care that much for Cruel Intentions, generally the first 5 mins for Placebo and the last 5 for Bittersweet Symphony by the Verve are my fav bits

Ooooooooooh yes, good call. Also an excellent ending song as well with The Verve, Bittersweet Symphony, very evocative :D

LOL, Lisa, snap!

I prefer the Alias closing theme tune to the opening one, but I also still think the opening one is kinda groovy. Though very odd when you first hear it. :)
Carnivale was weird to start with, but a grower. :)
Laura - February 24, 2005 11:48 AM (GMT)
The Alias title theme gets a bit annoying after a few episodes imo
Flamingo - February 24, 2005 12:49 PM (GMT)
The O.C hands down, it just makes me want to jump on the next plane
Laura - February 24, 2005 12:52 PM (GMT)
I quite like the O.C. theme too, it was on the Orange County soundtrack when it came out :wox:
Krazy - February 24, 2005 08:57 PM (GMT)
Oh i forgot about Tru calling's theme song, that rocks :)
obnoxious brat - February 24, 2005 11:02 PM (GMT)
I like the Buffy theme tune (probably cos I just like Nerf Herder) but I'm kind of sicj of it now, generally fast forward through it. I love the OC theme tune, having bought the Phantom Planet album years ago when it came out it makes me feel very cool. :p The Jonathan Creek themetunes excellent as well.
One thing I think is very fun is listening to theme tunes when you're going about your everyday life (fighting people to get onto the tube for me!), especially if its something very familiar like the Simpson's theme- it makes everything seem so surreal and, if its loud enough, confuses the people around you!
Matthew Matic - February 25, 2005 10:10 AM (GMT)
For films I like Dune, Nemesis and Superman.
For TV shows I like the Barry Gray scores to Gerry Anderson shows: Fireball XL5, Stingray, Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet, Joe90. The music is one of the best things about these shows that seems to be lacking in the Thunderturds film and New Capatin Scarlet. Also in TV shows I like SG1.
Can't think of any more
willowroolz - February 25, 2005 10:12 AM (GMT)
At the moment I'm cranking up the Futurama theme
Stewie Griffin - March 8, 2005 11:30 PM (GMT)
For films, theres only one choice for me and thats got to be the main theme to Star Wars. For TV my current favourite is Millennium, although I also like Firefly, Stargate Atlantis, Voyager and the speeded-up Deep Space Nine. The slowed down dramatic Red Dwarf theme of the first few seasons is pretty good too.

The Firefly theme tune is constantly in my head but I find it really hard to sing. (which means I sing it very badly as I can't stop myself  )

LOL, Alex, I'm the same. I can't sing to save my life but I can't help breaking into the theme and it bears absolutely no resemblance to the original ;)

I sang along to the theme tune on every episode during my recent rewatch. Of course it was brilliantly sung. ;)

My favourite is probably the A - Team or Knight Rider :D

I loved the Fall Guy. For some reason it's reminding me of the Dukes of Hazzard theme tune with the voiceover on it as well

I SO loved the Fall Guy theme. Lee Majors singing.
Going back even further I love the themes to The Persuaders (really cool and moody), The Protectors (Tony Christie belting out Avenues & Alleyways), and The Champions.
As far as the whole package (music + images) goes, Voyager was always pretty stunning, just a shame about the actual show.
Current fave - Dead Like Me, but Hustle starts next week and I seem to remember that had a great opening sequence.
