Title: 2.01 Mind The Baby
willowroolz - August 1, 2004 03:03 PM (GMT)
Zhaan, Chiana and Rygel are on Moya, who is about to be attacked by a Sheyang vessel.
Crichton is with D'Argo, who is unconscious.
Meanwhile, Aeryn, in her prowler, communicates with Crais aboard Talyn and mentions an agreement they have...

"I'm just an ignorant warrior who believes love means you're willing to fight and die for your fellow living beings."
Everytime I watch this episode I am thankful that they decided against opening the season with Re:Union. This is an absolute cracker of a season opener, even if it was meant to be the second episode. Yes, that does mean that certain references and character developments don't make any sense (references to Litigara, Zhaan's trial and her Delvian Seek - which just renders her annoying for the duration of the episode). But it also means that the cliffhanger is resolved immediately and that we get some very high tensions between the crew themselves, the crew and Crais and also, quite unexpectedly, between the two leviathans.
There is a lot of shouting in this episode - most of it quite dramatic. The argument between John, D'Argo and Aeryn is one of my favourite scenes - I love the way Ben Browder can be talking quietly and seemingly be in complete control, only to start bellowing halfway through the same sentence. There's a wonderful tension in the scene and John and D'Argo's intuition that Aeryn isn't telling them the whole truth is beautifully played.
"You want to have a mid-life crisis? Fine, ditch the firm, head off to Maui, shack-up with a supermodel... But you don't get to keep the Porsche."
Once the cliffhanger is satisfyingly resolved, though, the focus of the episode switches to the struggle for control of Talyn. Moya and her crew naturally don't want Crais to gain the baby leviathan's trust, but it may already be too late. In fact, it comes as something of a shock to learn that Aeryn had struck a deal with Crais that had him guide her, John and D'Argo to a habitable asteroid whilst, for her part, Aeryn agrees to help Crais calm Talyn. It comes as even more of a shock when she agrees to go with Crais at the end of the episode when Talyn is threatening to destroy his mother should Crais not be allowed to return to him.
"My coma was more entertaining than this."
This episode also has one of my favourite comedy moments from the series, as John and D'Argo play rock/scissors/paper to pass the time. D'Argo's inability to accept the fact that paper beats rock is hilarious, but not nearly as funny as the shots of him playing the game by himself
John: "So you better behave yourself with Tayln and Aeryn because if you hurt either one of them I'm gonna hunt you down."
Crais: "You hunt me down? That would complete the symmetry nicely wouldn't it?"
In the end Crais gets his way. Talyn has learnt to trust him to the degree that, when faced with the decision of choosing either Crais or Aeryn to be his commander, he chooses Crais, completing the Peacekeeper's transformation from Captain to fugitive. It is a decision that will haunt Moya and her crew, a fact which is played out in the moving final scene.
One thing that slightly annoys me about this episode is the way in which Moya is prepared to go back to the asteroid field whilst Scorpy's Command Carrier is still there, seemingly negating all the hard work and sacrifice that went into the big escape in Family Ties. Still, a mother's love and all that...
Crichton's behaviour seems a little bit more "out there" than usual. There's the first appearance of Scorpy's coolant rods. After seeing that amazing effect you have to wonder where that badass half-breed keeps his brain...
Also, do you think Scorpy's breath smells? Just look at the expression on Braca's face when Scorpy pulls him close!
So this is an episode that brings closure to season one's cliffhanger, leaves a lot of questions about the "missing" episode unanswered, and throws up a lot of new questions that will plague the crew for the foreseeable future.
You can't ask for more from an opening episode, can you?

ah, reading your review Steve, it now makes a lot more sense, I was wondering why Zhaan, was acting so bizarrely, with the chanting etc.
I have to say, I'm so impressed with how quickly all the little cliff hangers from the season 1 finale is dealt with. It did seem mightily quick (I didn't watch 2x00) so I guess there are quite a few bits missing to explain (possible episode later on, with flashbacks?)
I can't add much to Steve's fabulous review (c'mon Steve, leave us something to write about :P  ) Still in shock about the offspring leaving with Crais, turning on Aeryn, leaving Moya, awwwh to Moya's reaction, and big awwwh, for the offfspring promising Moya to keep in touch. LOL at Crichton's analogy
Boo, hiss to Zhaan, for being so selfish in her reluctance to stop chanting, and help Pilot, Rygel and Chianna
Shocked by Aeryn at the beginning, I had serious doubts about her motives, but thankfully had all faith restored (all for the greater good).
Some great lines (already quoted by Steve, esp the Porsche speech, his delivery of that line, was perfect)LOL at rock, paper, scissors, right there with you D'argo
A great episode, lots of shouting, tension, starbursts and admittance to the *ahem* encounter between John and Aeryn.
Just a shame the next episode is pants ;)

Just remembered I'd said I'd join in the Farscape rewatch!
What a fantastic series this is! The character writing is quite possibly the best of any series I've seen.
I had forgotten just how much I like Aeryn :)
I haven't seen any first season eps for quite a while, but there was just about enough information about previous events for me to remember the broad details as to how they got to where the ep starts.
I suck at writing ep reviews, so participation in this rewatch will most likely be in the form of broad comments and responses to others
A great start to the new season, although somewhat disjointed to begin with because the Moyaboard people seem to be talking about events that we know nothing about.

Just watched this one. It's all new territory for me here, aboard the Season 2 board !! :o
I was going to watch Re:Union but I've got a lower quality mpg copy of that one so decided against it.
As series openers go this one is quite effective. It ties up the threads left over from the season 1 finale and sets the season off in a new direction of sorts.
The situation with Crais/Talyn is fascinating, and I can't wait to see more of that. Plus we've now got Scorpius as a pretty regular bad guy. If anything that works better. Crais seems to be a better character going through some form of reformation, whilst Scorpius is a lot more effective nemesis for Crichton.
This one must have been good, I even had Vic sitting down watching some of this as well  I think secretly, she's coming around to the series as well

I'm glad you're enjoying it, James :)
It'll be interesting to see what you think of this season. I think the big episodes are amazing, but I do find a handful of the in between episodes a bit uneven in quality.
(Takes a defensive position before Alex can hit me :fear:  )

Every series has it's rough patches Steve, need we say B5 Season 5 ??
Pretty sure I've not seen anything from Season 2. I stopped tuning into the Beeb broadcasts at the backend of Season 1.

I can't believe you have started already. No more trying to influence OK
glad to see you are keeping an open mind James
I stand by my conviction that Season 2 is my favourite although of course everyone is different.

Meltdown is worse :p
