| QUOTE |
Out of the blackness the first thing Jack (Matthew Fox) senses is pain. Then burning sun. A Bamboo forest. Smoke. Screams. With a rush comes the horrible awareness that the plane he was on tore apart in mid-air and crashed on a Pacific island. From there it's a blur, as his doctor's instinct kicks in: people need his help.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stripped of everything, the 48 survivors scavenge what they can from the plane for their survival. Some panic. Some pin their hopes on rescue. A few find inner strength they never knew they had—like Kate who, with no medical training, suddenly finds herself suturing the doctor's wounds. The band of friends, family, enemies and strangers must work together against the cruel weather and harsh terrain. But the intense howls of the mysterious creatures stalking the jungle fill them all with fear. Fortunately, thanks to the calm leadership of quick-thinking Jack and level-headed Kate (Evangeline Lilly), they have hope. But even heroes have secrets, as the survivors will come to learn.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From J.J. Abrams, the creator of Alias and Felicity comes an action-packed adventure that will bring out the very best and the very worst in the people who are lost. |

Channel 4 has snapped up two much-lauded US dramas including one starring glamorous former New Adventures Of Superman leading lady Teri Hatcher.
She stars in Desperate Housewives about a group of wealthy suburban mums who profess to lead lives of domestic bliss but harbour dark secrets.
Also coming is Lost, about the survivors of a plane crash marooned on a remote island gripped by dark forces. Both have been hailed as "next big things" in the US.
Housewives, described as an adult soap about the dark side of suburbia, sees Hatcher play one of four troubled women.
It's narrated by a character who committed suicide in episode one. Critics have hailed it as original and a welcome break from reality TV.
Lost features survivors from an air crash who find themselves washed up on a remote island with dark forces at work.
It's been described as having elements of The Twilight Zone and even a deadly creature lurking in the jungle.
Creator JJ Abrams said: "There are a lot of upsides to this premise and one enormous downside, you're stuck with these people for ever."
A Channel 4 spokeswoman told TV Plus: "It's still early days with these shows in America but when they were shown to critics earlier this year, the soundings were very good. People have been very receptive to them. They will be screened next year and in a peak-time slot."
Viewers could see one of them fill the Friday slot recently vacated by Friends. |
I don't trust C4 as far as I could throw them so I doubt that Lost will stay in a prime time slot for long.
| QUOTE |
| The duo will air in primetime on C4 and its digital, youth-skewed niche net E4 and help fill the gaps in its schedules left by the demise of "Friends," "Frasier" and "Sex and the City." |
From what I've heard of Lost it is sci-fi/fantasy so how will it be the right show to replace these three shows? They can't share that many viewers surely?

No I meant how Channel 4 killed Alias - with there idiotic programming they killed Alias on UK tv
Flamingo - September 8, 2004 10:42 AM (GMT)
Ah! See some people think JJ killed Alias with S3.. I got confused. I hate C4 for a thousand reasons.. but I still recieve the channel and I thought there would be little chance of me seeing any of it before I saw these articles.

C4 ?? I refuse to be reliant on the services of a terrestrial channel. D/l it is then

Geez. I have to come to the UK to learn the interesting stuff. Sexy little Emilie is indeed part of the cast. Here's what our TV GUIDE says about LOST: "...JJ Abrams has done it again, bringing a thrilling, sensational urgency to the hokiest of premises. Relentlessly suspenseful, lavishly produced and terrifically cast with a large ensemble...LOST is a real find. If viewers discover it, they'll want to come back." I know I'm going to check it out (8pms on Wednesday, premieres on the 22d). It's opposite that gawd-awful HAWAII. I wonder how SMALLVILLE will fare opposite it?
The promos for DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES didn't interest me. I know this is hypocritical at my age but...Terri Hatcher isn't aging very well. However, TV GUIDE says: "Wow. A little KNOTS LANDING, a little 'American Beauty', this sexy and satirical twist on the prime-time soap is TV bliss, with a perfect blend of humor and intrigue and a delightfully eclectic cast...The season's juiciest must-see guilty pleasure." Premieres in October. Timeslot is Sundays at 9pm opposite a couple other new shows and L&O: CRIMINAL INTENT.
Have you guys heard of the new show BOSTON LEGAL? It starts James Spader and William SHATNER in a spinoff of THE PRACTICE. Not sure whether I'm interested.

I keep meaning to download this. Perhaps it should be next on my list after B5... and ooh, after DLM tomorrow.

You know, I'm ashamed to say this, but I completely missed her in the pilot. It was only afterwards that I heard she was in it, and even now I can't remember who she played. Guess I'll have to rewatch that one then

Judging from the promos, Emilie plays a young, pregnant lady.
Starts on Wednesday (tomorrow!). I'm looking forward to it.

I watched the pilot last night. It kept me gripped, the way it was shot it felt more like a film that a pilot to a tv show. What was strange was hearing Emilie speak in an Australian accent. I am so used to hearing her voice on Roswell.
This is the episode list which i found on tvtome.com
1x03 - Tabula Rasa
1x04 - Walkabout
1x05 - White Rabbit
1x06 - House of the Rising Sun
1x07 - The Moth
1x08 - Confidence Man
1x09 - Solitary (written by David Fury)
1x10 - Raised by Another

TV Yank - September 24, 2004 02:35 AM (GMT)
LOST starts out interestingly. It moves and a slow, deliberate pace so viewers used to the usual fast-paced actioner may get impatient. Instead, the situation and the characters are clearly revealed. Nothing demonstrates that better than the fact that it begins at the aftermath of the crash. A young doctor, an attractive young woman and a British rockband member get the most coverage. Everyone else has a few lines, but it adds up. The oft-mentioned Daniel Dae Kim has a role (has he ever played a 'nice' guy?). ROSWELL's Emilie de Ravin plays a hugely pregnant lady with (as Darris pointed out) an Aussi accent (but not a strong one, to American ears--just as in her appearance in THE HANDLER). It's pretty obvious where the plot is going and that may account for the title "LOST" (that's a hint).

A word about two new Wednesday shows.
VERONICA MARS is about a teen detective (played by Kristen Bell). She assists her father who is a PI after losing his Sheriff's job when he tried to pin the murder of a teenage girl on her father. The suspect happens to be extremely rich and influential. The dead girl was Veronica's friend, and her brother was Veronica's boyfriend. The show piles angst upon angst and I tuned out about halfway thru. I don't intend to return.
CSI: NEW YORK. Now this is compelling drama. My favorite show of the nite and it was far superior to it's "pilot" during last season's CSI: MIAMI. Familiar stuff for CSI fans. Factoid: Eddie Cahill plays a young detective--he starred in a short-lived crime drama called GLORY DAYS--along with an attractive young Aussi actress, Poppy Montgomery--now starring on another Jerry Bruckheimer drama, WITHOUT A TRACE.
---
Thurs nite's CSI (Las Vegas). Geo Eads' shorn head--eek! Story and presentation--double eek! I'm still confused.

Veronica Mars did quite well, critically at least. I've got the first episode to watch later some time.
CSI New York, I liked the original pilot episode across in Miami, so if this one's better, great
CSI and Without A Trace to look forward to tonight as well. Hurrah
Crichton Kicks - September 25, 2004 01:05 AM (GMT)
CSI New York started well. I don't recall any episode of CSI, whether it be Miami or Las Vegas disturbing me as much as this first episode of New York did. The crime of this particular episode was terrifying. The acting, from both of the leads, but also importantly the peripheral cast was excellent. There's plenty here to draw me back again. Unsurprisingly, just like Miami and LV, they make the most of the city's visuals too.
Veronica Mars, I have to admit, I liked. Started slowly but built well towards the latter half of the episode. Not to everyone's taste no doubt, but given my weakness for this kind of show I found enough there to warrant further investigation. As first episodes go, it had it's faults, it was at times formulaic to the point of being predictable, but countering that the show threw up some interesting threads and characters. Kristen Bell I found to be pleasing in the leading role.
Two decent first episodes. NY oozing class, Veronica Mars showing some potential. I'll be checking out both of them again next week.

Give the repeat a chance John, you never know. It does improve in the latter half. I've switched off in the middle of too many shows only to find that they improved dramatically once I had
On the other hand, you still might not think much of it, but at least you tried

Actually, I still have it on videotape. I tried some of the second half but couldn't keep on watching. It's not my type of show. I hear the ratings were dire (2.9 million views, iirc). But it plays on UPN so those particular numbers may not affect its survival.
It'll be nice to have the hour break between LOST and CSI:NY.
BTW, JOAN OF ARCADIA's new season premiere? I thought it was excellent. And I liked Amber's new hair--darker (I think) with bangs.
I missed DR VEGAS because I was sick (not a pun).
Crichton Kicks - September 26, 2004 07:57 PM (GMT)

I've got Arcadia and Dr Vegas to watch later. High expectations for the former, not so for the latter but we'll see.

Interesting news regarding Veronica Mars. Quoted from The Futon Critic;
| QUOTE |
LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- MTV has quietly picked up the repurposing rights from Warner Bros. Television to UPN's new fall drama "Veronica Mars."
Encores of the show's initial broadcast on the netlet will air the following Tuesday at 7:00/6:00c on the cable channel beginning September 28. "Mars" regularly airs Tuesdays at 9:00/8:00c on UPN.
No financial details about the pact were released. The news marks the second repurposing deal of the 2004-05 season, the other being Cartoon Network's with 20th Century Fox Television for the midseason FOX comedy "American Dad."
MTV's last repurposing deal was during the 2002-03 season for another Warner Bros. Television series, the FOX drama "Fastlane."
|
On the one hand, given VM's low numbers last week, perhaps this will work in it's favour with UPN. On the other, as the article states, the last repurposing MTV undertook was Fastlane, and it didn't save it in the end, although that was the POX network.
TV Yank - September 29, 2004 04:07 AM (GMT)
I just noticed that while VERONICA MARS debuted on Wednesday, it's actual timeslot is Tuesdays at 9pm--against very uncertain competition. The ratings might get better. (However...it's on right now...and I'm not watching it. In fact, Tuesday has nothing that I want to watch. )
Crichton Kicks - September 29, 2004 11:12 AM (GMT)
It'll be interesting to see how UPN handle the show. All being well they'll give it a chance.
