Title: Football!!!
ken1701e - July 31, 2004 03:59 PM (GMT)
Oh well the new season (for those of us out side the premiership) starts in just seven days time. What are the expectations for the members of this board that their team will do?
Personally - My team is LEEDS UNITED and I think it depends how good a start to the season they get. If they get off to a flyer they should be there or there abouts at the end of the season - despite it being a whole new team. If they get off to a bad start then I think it could be a long haul!!!
NJS - July 31, 2004 04:02 PM (GMT)
If Woodgate playes the majority of the season we should make the top 4. If not probably 6th or 7th.
Man Utd will win the title.
Crichton Kicks - July 31, 2004 04:17 PM (GMT)
After an easy 3 pts on the opening day at Elland Road we should be off and running towards our playoff place this year ;)

Actually I think Arsenal will win the league again - not as easy as last season but I think they will, nobody has done anything this summer to suggest otherwise!!!
Middlesborough could be the unfancied team to watch even if they have got MR I only play when I want too VIDUKA!!!!

We're notoriously slow starters. Besides, we never win at Elland Road
I remember going 3-0 up there once and going on to lose 4-3 :(
Persephone - July 31, 2004 06:35 PM (GMT)
I'm too depressed to even consider, how well we'll do this season. Camara's gone to Celtic, albeit on a loan deal, :(
I don't think it should be too bad, I'm ideally hoping for higher than a play off finish, but I suppose play offs will do.

Surely, we all hate Leicester :) No cheating this time, tw*ts

Sure, why not, let's all hate Leicester ;)  (in the absence of the Al***n shite)

Apart from one or two dodgy off the pitch events at Leicester (a lot of midland clubs seem to be neanderthal based) I don't have that much against them.
Who do you support again James?
My only interest in the "Championship" (sic) is the continuing exile of the forces of darkness from Wearside.

Back in the days of yore (last game of 1983) I had the best day out ever of the old fashioned everything going mental days at a certain place not far from you Lisa :)
It featured the most running battles and general mayhem ever seen - including a police horse actually in the pub we were in.
Subtle hint - the team play in gold ;)
Persephone - July 31, 2004 07:52 PM (GMT)
Was it The Wanderer pub by any chance ;)
Michelle - July 31, 2004 07:59 PM (GMT)
Playoffs would be nice, seeing as we haven't had anything to cheer about for a few years.
Some greater consistency would also be welcomed (and I mean consistency in the fact of scoring regular points ;) ), as we normally either start of the season really well, then go downhill, or vice versa. And either way, thats not enough if we want to challenge for promotion.
NJS - July 31, 2004 08:01 PM (GMT)
It was the first one on the right hand side of the bottom of the high street if thats what it is that starts near the train station.
The only times I've been since then I've been by car so I can't be sure.
I do remember the owner shouting about his antique clock on the wall trying to stop it being wrecked and only succeeding in drawing attention to it ( "not me clock, not me clock ... ah no" :)) - it was like the willd west.

The Wanderer pub. Had a real mental block for a while, but is that the one next to the underpass?
I always used to have to walk past that pub on the way back home in the 1st and 2nd year, and in the summer, they'd always be loads of students sitting outside and on the pavement. It was really annoying when you knew you had work/revision to do and couldn't go and join them (on the times when I was being sensible and responsible that is ;)).

Prince Albert pub? Or the one that's now Flares - can't remember what it used to be.
Persephone - July 31, 2004 10:30 PM (GMT)
I think he must mean the pub that's now Flares M.
Wouldn't happen now, I don't think there's a single pub in Wolves, that lets in rival fans now ;)
Yes Michelle, the Wanderer is opposite the infamous subway ;)

Leicester. They're cheating b*stards. The last time they came down they went into administration on the first day of the season and came out of it on the last, when they'd been promoted. It was an abuse of the system that's since prompted a change in the rules.
That and the fact that they're one of the triumvirate of sh*te, along with Forest and Stoke.

While we're on the subject of football, a joke; a variation on an old theme, but funny (to me) nonetheless;
| QUOTE |
Another Euro 2004 beckham joke, will we ever get bored of these? I doubt it ...
Ronaldo, Luis Figo and David Beckham are standing in heaven before the throne of God. God looks at them and says "And so here you face your Lord and maker. I shall ask each of you a question."
Addressing Ronaldo first he asks "Ronaldo, one of the world's greatest soccer players, what is it that you believe brought you here before me?"
Ronaldo looks God in the eye and says passionately, "I believe soccer to be the food of life. Nothing else brings such unbridled joy to so many people, from the slums of Rio to the bright lights of Madrid. I have devoted my life to bring such joy to people, with little else, who stood on the terraces supporting their team."
God smiles and offers Ronaldo a seat to his left.
He then turns to Luis Figo. "And similarly you, Luis, a hero to so many, what do you think it was brought you to my throne?" Figo stands tall and proud, "I believe courage, honour and passion are the fundamentals to life and I've spent my whole playing career providing a living embodiment of these commitments."
God, moved by the passion of his speech, offers Figo a seat to his right.
He then turns to Beckham: "And you, David. Presumably you want your ball back?".

Midtable to playoffs Ken.
We've got a cultured midfield this year in Bisgaard, Reich and Idiakez, plus we've got the experience of Ian Taylor in there as well. The youngsters that we gambled on last year should pay dividends this season, just as they did at the end of the last one; Holmes, Huddlestone, Mills etc. We've got two of the best keepers in the division in Grant and Camp, the latter being the England U19 keeper, and we've got useful options up front in Junior, Smith, Peschisoledo etc.
All in all, we're in with a shout this year. Just can't wait to take 6 pts of the sc*m, F*rest.

With LEEDS, I think it really is a question of how good a start we get (and I dont just mean the first game against you). I am a realist and now one of these that think we are going to walkover this league, neither am I like the hordes of WEDNESDAYITES who belive their club is too good to be in the position they are in.
Leeds made fundamental mistakes, mistakes I blame a certain Mr Ridsdale    for but now we have to make good with what we have got left. Kevin Blackwell seems to be putting together the best team possible when you have no money whatsoever to spend and a lot will depend on how quick they gel together. The pre-season friendleys seem to suggest very well.
I would be delighted with a mid table to playoffs position this season but I only hope that if unfortuantely they are struggling to start off with that the board dont fire Blackwell in a panic!!!

I know all the talk with the lads at work (and football) has yielded the popular belief that we fear Leeds will pull a Sheff Wed and slip straight through. The players they're buying for the most part are past it. Ricketts is a gamble, and the rest really have long since seen their better days. I worry for Leeds, I really do, but not much, once I remember I don't like them ;) Those old 70s rivalries die hard ;)

I, for one, wouldnt be too suprised if that did happen.
As for the players, as I say, what else can you do with no money. So annoyed that they let Milner go though especially as they had promised he was the one that wouldnt!!! Not sorry to see the back of the workshite donkey Viduka though!!!

We had the same problem a couple of years ago Ken. Relegated, all the top players went for peanuts, no money for new players and bags of debt.
Luckily the few things we did have going for us were that we have an excellent academy and a great manager in George Burley. He's doing for Derby exactly what he did for Ipswich, there's arguably no better nurturer of young talent than George. We took a gamble last year and played a host of youngsters for the majority of the seasons; Tom Huddlestone played when he was 16, Lee Holmes played when he was 15, Pablo Mills was 17 IIRC, and Camp was 17/18. It's paid off, not only do they now have the skill but the experience to match. Plus to that, on the financial side, we've got a new board who've pumped in millions to slash the debt in half, currently about £15 million IIRC, and we were getting big crowds for most of last season, even when we were in the relegation zone.
Sadly for Leeds, their fans appear to be a little fickle, and the Academy set up there isn't nearly as good, plus you have an untested manager that could go either way.
It's going to be a long hard season by the looks of it. Just look at West Ham last year, their team was far superior but even they struggled at times.
