7/13 - The Unicorn and the Wasp

Someone's had a lot of fun, haven't they? Yes, scriptwriter Gareth Roberts, I'm looking at you. I bet you were tickled pink as you sat down to compose a comic Doctor Who episode based on a classic country house murder mystery, with all the requisite elements - a vicar, an aristocratic lady with a secret, a body in the library, a jewel thief, a gay male couple and a giant wasp (yes, I know, I know). Something tells me that Roberts is an Agatha Christie fan, too, because here's the lady herself, played by Fenella Woolgar, on the eve of her fabled ten-day disappearance in 1926, and the script is packed with in-joke references to her book titles (as in "That's set the cat among the pigeons", "This is a crooked house" and so on). Christie, the Doctor and Donna join forces when there's a murder at the lovely home of the poised Lady Eddison (Felicity Kendal). I suspect Doctor Who die-hards will find it all a bit blah, but it's a diverting, cheerful bit of silliness for the grown-ups.

Loved this one !!

There was a lot of delighted squeaking whenever I spotted a book title.

Terrific scene in the kitchen . Camptown races ! :lmao:

Thought it was hilarious and tense, all at the same time. The Poirot-esque denouement was masterful.

The humour was spot on and the Agatha Christie plot was fantastic. I laughed out loud a few times :) the detox after poisoning was hilarious

*hides behind wall*

I didn't enjoy this episode as much as the others, I was hoping no mention would be made of is the Doctor and Donna a couple, alas it was.

I was amused slightly with all the references in the episode like the library with the lead piping, with Professor Peach being the victim.

It was the giant wasp that I wasn't buying, although with Doctor Who anything is perfectly normal.

Well I enjoyed it but all the way through the episode I kept wondering why the Doctor was coming out with these rather odd lines here and there and it was only after watching Doctor Who Confidential that I realised that they were working in the titles of her books. Never read an Agatha Christie book I'm afraid although I did end up watching a doc-drama about her & her real life disappearence which was on BBC4 later that night which was very good.

The actress playing her was very well cast as she really looks like she belongs in the 1920's, when I've seen her in other, modern things she always looks strangely out of place to me. :ponder:

i just wonder about the fact everyone they meet think the doctor/donna is a couple and have them denying, what are the chance that in a future episode they are gonna say yes for some undercover reason

I think that it's going to be mentioned a few times more yet - obviously it's this season's running joke. :)

As for the ep I enjoyed it apart from the giant wasp alien which was really naff.

I rewatched some of that ; I saw it when it was originally shown. :)

I liked it, too - I thought it was quirkily done, but very watchable ( thinking in particular of the way they showed Agatha inventing the Poirot character ). :ponder:

It was really well done. The actress playing Christie was very good and I think she played Jane Austen as well in that drama that was on the other day.

Getting back on topic :whistling: I thought Donna / CT was pretty good again this week.

Yep, same actress. I watched Miss Austen Regrets last night and it was superb.

I quite enjoyed this, though since I've never read an Agatha Christie book most of the references would have been lost on me. I did like how they played it out as a murder mystery, complete with the gathering at the end and Agatha going round each member of the house in turn.

I'm hoping this couple joke is building up to something, it's getting a bit old. Is it in DT's contract that he gets to kiss each companion? ;)

I laughed out loud at the Dickens reference, and then had to explain to people who I was watching with why

I sat and watched this with my dad today and although its still not a favourite with me, upon a second viewing it seemed a lot better. It might be because I had my dad explaining the Agatha references and explaining how Poirot figured in the plot. I have never read an Agatha Christie novel nor seen anything that has been televised of hers. The wasp did seem a bit far fetched still but it tied in well with the story. I do seem to enjoy an episode better when I have someone who is a Who fan watching the episode with me.

My dad is not keen on CT and is ready to sign a petition to bring Sally Sparrow back as the next companion. :p

Agreed, the wasp was shite

I thought the episode was okay, nothing special, but I was distracted towards the end so I'll probably have to watch it again
