Wow!
My heart would sink whenever Bones visited with her Dad or her brother. They had became very dull. So when I saw that this episode would center on her Dad's trial, I was very reluctant to view it.
What happened? This immediately became one of my favorite BONES episodes ever, if not my favorite -- and one of my favorite courtroom dramas ever. A beautifully written and directed story of Brennan's father's trial and what went on behind the scenes. It's not really new. It's just highly polished.
The trial is framed to be fast-moving (thanks to the writing and the editing) and informative but not weighed down. Yet there's opportunity for depth of characterization -- even from the judge. Patricia Belcher almost steals the show as the District Atty. The talented Ernie Hudson once again battles her as the Defense Atty.
There are some powerful scenes between the regulars becuz all but Brennan are witnesses for the Prosecution while Brennan can't due to conflict of interest, so she helps the Defense -- even tho she believes her father is guilty. That makes for some dramatically intense moments -- but with the usual quota of humor.
The resolution was the only disappointment -- but a mild one. I doubt whether that tactic would work or even be allowed. But it is clever and subtle.
This is a episode of a quality that BONES and every other show should aspire to.
Aw, some nice moments. I was convinced that Max had been cleared by the new forensics guy ( nice scene between him and Max in the Prison where he says he`s `lain with a woman ` ) and was sad when the real murder weapon turned up. :(
John, I`d agree with you about the episode. It could`ve been slick but turned out to be well-paced, with enough giggly bits to cut the tension.
This ep was probably the first one that I've been disappointed with, it just didn't feel right. That Bones would stoop to tricking the jury seemed wrong.
