2/13 - The Fires of Pompeii
Psychic powers and stone beasts run riot in old Pompeii, but can Donna dare the Doctor to change established history? |
Discuss. :)

I spent the first few minutes of this thinking Spot the reference.
The Tom Baker story City of Death had the Tardis hiding in a gallery as modern art, and the positions bit was from Mary Poppins. ;)
I wasn`t sure about the episode at first, but I thought it got better and better as it went on . I liked the whole Welsh stuff, and the marble inspector bit.
I got a bit :tear: when the Doctor agreed to go back and save the family. I thought Catherine Tate was good in that scene and the preceding one where it looks like she and the Doctor are sacrificing themselves.
Ooh, and the bit when the household gods turn out to be Donna and the Doctor .
Though when it cut back to Rome in six months time, I was half expecting Rose or someone else to be the visitor. :ponder:
Not sure about the constant references to D & D being married and them challenging it ; are the writers trying to tell us something ?

I may have been reading too much into this, I am normally the one to miss all the clues in Doctor Who but the soothsayer told Donna there was something on her back, I was wondering if this was a reference to Rose? I guess time will tell on that one.
This wasn't quite the episode I was expecting, it didn't come across as dramatic as I thought it would be, apart from the ending when Pompeii was actually being covered in ash.
And forgive me for being a noob when it comes to Dr Who but why can't the Doctor go back to Gallifrey and prevent whatever happened to his world happening?

I thought it was okay, quite amusing in parts (I laughed at The Doctor quoting Fawlty Towers  ) although - even if the TARDIS was translating - I doubt the locals would have been using expressions like "Give me a break"
There were some very impressive special effects towards the end.
Quite enjoyable on the whole, although Donna started to get on my nerves fairly quickly and after about 10 minutes I couldn't shake the feeling that Catherine Tate was actually Harry Redknapp in drag...

:lmao:
And you never see them together.... :o
I missed the Fawlty Towers bit.

I enjoyed it although C Tate is very jarring, I am hoping they don't use her too much :ermm: I was hoping they might take someone else with them - anyone would do
Great little story packed into 45mins though :)

I wonder why they`re sticking to one companion per Doctor ; in the, erm, olden days, they had up to 3, didn`t they ?
I fondly remember the joy of seeing Adric bumped off. :ph43r:

 I think that they ought to consider it, add to the dynamic and take the focus off Tate.

Was Adric an assistant ? My theory with bringing back Donna was that they wanted to bump off an assistant but that it might be a bit too controversial to kill off either Rose or Martha so they bring back Donna and then bump her off.
Anyway I enjoyed this episode – a bit slow to begin with but once the soothsayers started hitting the mark about Donna & the Doc ( reference to Rose when one of them said something about ‘ she’s looking for you ‘ oslt ) it really picked up. :)

:ponder:
Yep, Adric was a particularly annoying know-it-all who wore a gold badge on his jumper to show off his mathematical genius.

Meh . Didn't really have strong feelings one way or the other about this episode.
Donna is still kind of annoying me, and I think that the "Donna. Human. No" line didn't help since it made me think of the Lauren character from CT's sketch show .
I did like the "I am Sparticus" line and the Doctor threatening people with a water pistol though .
"She is returning", yay Rose.
"You've got something on your back", I'll be remembering that as the season goes on :ponder:
prophecy girl - April 15, 2008 09:18 AM (GMT)
the doctor welcome donna aboard but he didn't give her the key of the tardis (yet)
donna is more mature than rose and martha and it look like she can argue more easily with the doctor choice (a bit annoying if it's gonna be the same for the complete season :ermm: ). end up having to decide between the world or pompei (learning what is the "curse" of being a time lord)
donna and the doctor as brother and sister "really!" :o :lmao:
the vision people throwing truth to the doctor (not his real name, she is waiting for you) and donna ... that was an excellent scene
:ph43r: at the doctor and the water pistol
