Title: What Are You Reading?
melian - July 29, 2004 04:51 PM (GMT)
Ok, this is an easy one. What are you reading at the moment? And is it any good ;)
Hmmm. At the moment I am reading the second of the Night's Dawn Trilogy by Peter F Hamilton. I must admit they are pretty good so far ;)
I'm also kinda re-reading The Dark Tower series by Stephen King from the first book, The Gunslinger (only 2 months till The Dark Tower 7  ), Illium by Dan Simmons, The Killing Dance by Laurell K Hamilton (gotta finish up to Anita book 11 by September as number 12, Incubus Dreams is released then :D ), and I'm waiting for the new Robert Rankin book, Knees up Mother Earth, to pop through my letterbox early next week.
There are some others too but I can't be bothered to think what they are.
goth willow fan - July 29, 2004 04:55 PM (GMT)
Robert Rankin - Hollow Chocolate Bunnies of the Apocolypse
tbh it's OK but nothing special (sorry M)
melian - July 29, 2004 05:02 PM (GMT)
I tend to prefer his 'Brentford Trilogy' books myself. This new one is one of that series

I think those and the armageddon books are some of the few of his that I haven't read yet.
Can't type
melian - July 29, 2004 05:06 PM (GMT)
They are all totally worth the effort :D
And his books are usually pretty easy to get a hold of at the library. He's pretty popular ;)

Thats how I've read all of his. I've never bought one of them in my life. :) My library seem to be a bit short of brentford trilogy & armageddon ones though. :(
goth willow fan - July 29, 2004 05:09 PM (GMT)
I've read the first 2 of Night's Dawn, but haven't got round to the The Naked God Yet.
It took me 2 attempts to read The Reality Disfunction, the first time I got to the part with the mutilated body of the child in the wood I couldn't read any more :x

I swear I posted a response to this question, but its not here.
Although I did get a page timeout at one point, but I couldn't remember if it was on posting a reply or on refreshing the list.

That bit is pretty sick. Fortunately it doesn't get any worse (at least I haven't found anything yet ;) )
Yeah, these books were recommended to me as Sci Fi is not really my bag. I'm more into horror :D It took me about 200 pages to get into The Reality Dysfunction but then the rest of the book seemed to fly by ;)
I'm really enjoying this second book, though there is too little Joshua Calvert so far for my liking

What were you going to say?
Michelle - July 29, 2004 05:17 PM (GMT)
Okay, then, I'll post it again!
After just finishing War of the Flowers by Tad Williams (which was very good), I decided it was time to switch genres for a while. So now I'm reading The Count of Monte Christo which I bought for a £1 at xmas. Its okay so far, but I'm only 40 pages into it as of yet. After this its War & Peace.
Then, I've got Black House & Everything's Eternal by SK to read, the first book in the Serpent War saga by Raymond E Feist, and I'm sure many more. And I'm waiting for the third one of Robin Hobb's Tawny man saga to be in little paperback before I buy em all and read them.
melian - July 29, 2004 05:20 PM (GMT)
Black house is pretty good. Though not as good as The Talisman ;)
And I always enjoy SK's short stories. Everythings Eventual gets extra points in my book for including a Dark Tower short in it's line up (The Little Sisters of Eluria). I love me some Dark Tower :D
goth willow fan - July 29, 2004 05:24 PM (GMT)
War and Peace :o
I little light reading there then.
I'm waiting for The Tawny Man too, although I've yet to read the Liveship trilogy. Assassins Apprentice was very good.

I love The Talisman. if its only half as good as that, i'll still probably like it a lot. Although, I have tried to start it twice already and not got beyond the first bit of the prologue or whatever comes first in that book.

Yep, I'm sure it'll be a breeze. ;)
The liveship trilogy was very different, but still very good. I loved the assassin's series, but I'm thinking I need to re-read it before I get to the tawny man cos I can only remember the bare bones of the story.
NJS - July 29, 2004 05:53 PM (GMT)
I'm re-reading Caress of Twilight by Laurrell Hamilton as theres a new one due.
I did start a re-read of Dan Simmon's Hyperion series but I can't find the bloody second one
Well actually I sort of know where it is but I need to tidy a room from top to bottom to find it and I can't be arsed :)

Hyperion? Is that about a hotel in which a group of detectives fight the forces of darkness? ;)

Not quite and its older than Angel :D
Hyperion is a planet - its a Sci-Fi thing set after mankind has first spread around the galaxy a la Firefly.
Laura - July 29, 2004 06:09 PM (GMT)
I'm reading Ian Bank's 'Walking On Glass' at the moment but I'm finding it a bit hard to get into tbh.
LoobiLou - July 29, 2004 06:17 PM (GMT)
I have to admit, i haven't heard of half of the books you lot are reading
I read the Lord Of The Rings trilogy but they took forever to get through...
Shamingly i'm more into chick lit
Am currently reading 'Jemima J' by Jane Green
Laura - July 29, 2004 06:19 PM (GMT)
LOTR is my favourite book, I got through it really quickly because I couldn't put it down :D
Psycho Jack - July 29, 2004 06:30 PM (GMT)
Omerta by Mario Puzo.
It the third down the line after The Godfather and The Last Don and it is noticeably weaker than both. Still a good read tho! :)
Crichton Kicks - July 29, 2004 06:44 PM (GMT)
Despite having a multitude of unread novels at the moment, next up for me is a re-read of Greg Bear's THE FORGE OF GOD and it's sequal ANVIL OF STARS.
Jae - July 29, 2004 06:48 PM (GMT)
I'm reading The Firestarter by Stephen King.
Persephone - July 29, 2004 06:53 PM (GMT)
I'm re- reading E Branch - Defilers, at the moment by Brian Lunley :)
Pretty good book, it follows on from the Necroscope series, has a trio of savage vampires, that have come through from Starside to infect Earth.
The only bad thing I could say about his books, is that he doesn't hold back describing the violent feeding, ewwwwwh
Phillip Culley - July 29, 2004 06:56 PM (GMT)
I've currently got Ben Elton's 'Dead Famous' sitting half-read on the table :)

I thought the original series was fantastic and a couple of the follow ups nearly as good but I think he started to flog a dead horse a bit by the end.
Some events were sort of crowbarred into the timeline imo.
Persephone - July 29, 2004 07:11 PM (GMT)
I loved the Necroscope series, and the Wamphyri World books. Not so sure about the Lost Years volumes, or these last 3. I hated the E Branch follow ups the first time I read them, but, they're not so bad on the second read.
Have you read any of the Titus Crow series?
ken1701e - July 29, 2004 07:43 PM (GMT)
Currently Reading Peter David's STAR TREK new frontier series - or at least I will be continuing to do so when book 2 turns up!!!! (should be tomorrow)
willowroolz - July 29, 2004 07:44 PM (GMT)
Revelation Space by Alastair Reynolds. It's heavy going, though, and I haven't read any of it while I've been off - been flicking through the Buffy guide called Dusted, though, which is good fun.

No - I've read a few of his compliations and the psychomek series but not those.
Persephone - July 29, 2004 08:08 PM (GMT)
The Psychomek books were okay, not a patch on the original Necroscope series though. I must admit, with the exception of his Cthulu offerings, I'm a bit loathed to try anything else by him. I haven't tried the Titus Crow books, i was just wondering whether they were worth getting?

The Night's Dawn trilogy is amazing. It's pretty much a sf/horror hybrid, so I think it could suit both tastes. The Reality Dysfunction does take a while to get started, but the second half of it, and especially the climax, is just breathtaking. The Neutronium Alchemist is one of my favourite books of all, and The Naked God is just as good.
Peter Hamilton's genius is in coming up with all this futuristic technology but making it easily understandable, to the point where you immediately know how a character can use it in any given situation. He also writes engaging characters and thrilling action sequences.
And Joshua... how did I know you'd like him, Karen? He is a bit of a star. I always wondered who would play him if they ever made these novels into films :)
Crichton Kicks - July 29, 2004 10:21 PM (GMT)
Has anyone read David Brin's Uplift series ?? I've had Sundiver and Brightness Reef on my shelf for a couple of years now. Although having said that I've had Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars trilogy there for even longer than that, and I'm still only about halfway through Red Mars
goth willow fan - July 29, 2004 10:31 PM (GMT)
The Mars trilogy has been in my to be read pile (or more accurately, mountain) for years.

The thing is, I've read half of Red Mars, and it is actually very well written, I just can't get the damned time. Even knowing that I wouldn't get to read them for years, I still snapped up Green Mars and Blue Mars about a week after beginning the first one

I got my copy imported from America as I couldn't wait for it to be released over here :P
It's great btw :D
I'm just waiting patiently until the 12th Anita Blake book is released. Yet another one I'll get from the US ;)
